No question, fresh fuel in the carb's float bowl is the magic elixir. I
made a special screwdriver & installed it on the ignition key ring. If
the bike's been sitting long enough to require the cold start choke, I
ALWAYS loosen the little screw on the side of the float bowl & drain the
fuel. Then I switch the petcock to prime & it usually starts in a
couple of kicks.

Hi,
I have a 99 DR 350 and would like to put some road tyres on for the
winter with good grip and reasonable life - any recommendations please?
Thanks,

Good advice on replacing them with hex head - I never thought of that.

I agree. On my last dual sport, I lost three screws. One for a
side panel, one in the front headlight plate, and one on the rear
brake light. Instead of loc-tite, I replaced all of the screws with a
10mm hex nut type. That way I can use a socket wrench to tighten them
properly. Those phillip head screws aren't worth crap. Toss 'em as
soon as possible.

I am happy with the IRC GP-110 tire I am running on the rear. I put it
on about 2000 miles ago and it has held up well. It works better than the
stock rear both on and off the road. It's cheap too (a bit less that $50). I
will be putting a matching front on soon. Of the 2000 miles probably 1700 of
them are on the road.

Agree with Keith...I've really liked the IRC GP-110s on a couple of bikes.
I thought it did much better than stock off-road, but if you ever use a
MT-21 on the rear, you'll see how much better it can be. If you ride mostly
street though, the IRCs are great.

I got the Suzuki rack for $47 from local dealer...its the larger of the two
they make, and the less expen$ive one. You got to bend/torque it a bit to
get it to mount up right, but it looks good and is very solid.

Talk to Arne Larsen at Mac-D. He should be able to build you a reasonably
priced rear rack built to your specs.

Tell him crazy Vik sent you..lol...seriously he does to notch work at
Wal-mart prices.
If I ever find a DR350 or XR400 I will have him make me an integrated rear
rack/side protectors so I can use soft luggage. I should be picking up my
integrated pannier rack/rear luggage rack for my KLR650 this weekend. I'll
call it my expedition system..=)

I've got a '93 that I use as a sportbike. I run a Metzeler ME33 90/90H21 on
the front and a ME55 120/90V18 on the rear. These give more grip than the
chassis (especially the front fork) can hope handle, so you'll run out of
other things before you need more grip. There is a smaller 80/90H21 front
available that you might consider that might give a better profile than the
90/90H21, but either will work good.
I've done a track day at Willow Springs with this set-up and it worked very
well. As for durability, the bike's light weight makes tire wear almost a
non-issue. While my friends on real sportbikes shread their tires after a few
months of hard use, mine just keep going with no appreciable wear, and I'm
going just as fast. Actually I have to corner harder than they do to make up
for lack of steam on straightaways. Be prepared for much lighter steering at
first compared to knobbies, but you get used to it after a few rides.
later,
Brian
