Subject: (dr350) DR350SE shifting
Hi all,
I rode a Triumph 200cc all over the foothills of southern Calif when I
was supposed to be studying 30 years ago. Now live in Victoria BC (the
island is laced with logging roads) and am just getting back into the
saddle. I picked up a 1995 DR350SE couple of weeks ago. It is
completly stock (so far). I just got a set of Kouba links from Norm as
they seem to be a definite "must have" on this bike, other mods will
wait for my skills to come back.
I have one question about the gearbox. It is almost impossible to find
neutral with the engine running (no problem at all from 1st or 2nd with
a dead engine). Is this normal on this little beast? Any
recommendations? It has about 3500 miles on it and I don't know what
kind of oil is presently in it.
Thanks,
Mick.

Subject: (dr350) Engine noise
I am new to this mailing list, but I've had a DR350S since '94 (leftover '93
model).
I've ridden off-road a few times, but mainly its my street bike, and recently
my sport bike! I've been scrapping with friends on F3's and ZX7's and
900SS's, etc., and usually leading the way in the LA mountain canyons. In May
we did a CLASS school at Streets of Willow (I was way faster than most, but
butt slow on the straight) with a set of Metzeler street tires mounted up.
Anyway, the bike has about 7500 miles with a good deal of this at or near
full throttle. Recently I went to the WSB race at Laguna Seca (about 750 mi
round trip) and it was near full throttle into a head wind (75mph) most of
the way home. The whole time I'm riding I'm thinking "did suzuki engineers
test this thing for hours on end at full throttle?"
Not surprisingly, the motor has developed a rattling noise that is especially
noticeable when closing the throttle and coasting down in gear to a
stoplight. I think it sounds like a cam chain that's used up all of its
tension adjustment. I did read somewhere that its not unusual to replace the
cam chain at 6000mi. Does this sound typical of this engine and possible
problem?
If I have to tear it down this would be a great time for a big bore kit!!
Thanks for your help.
Brian

Hi Mick,
try adjusting the clutch-lever. If it is too loose, the clutch-plates
will stick together and you will have problems to find
neutral-position.
If the clutch-adjusting is ok, maybe the clutch plates are not plain
enough.
I think the oil makes no big difference, if warm.
Just my 2 cents.

Hi all,
i think that the broken cylinder is mine :-)=20
It is not from WB. It's from a local German Store called
"Grossew=84chter" and was installed by a local dealer with lots of SOS
tuning experience.
I cannot suggest the 385cc kit for obvious reasons.=20
The original sleeve is 4mm thick. when boring to 385cc, there are only
2mm left.
After about 2000 mls of moderate (mainly street) use the bottom of the
sleeve went of and got right into the gearbox. 10 mls later i needed a
lift from the german ADAC, the local automobile club.:-((
You can see pics of this rubbish on my DR350-Page:=20

Hi,
I have a '99 DR350SE and would like to drop the gear ratios to either
15/47 or 14/41 but do not know what I would need to do to the chain -
will I need a new one and if so, how many links?
Fascinating set of emails so far!

I believe that this bike comes stock with a 110 link chain; the dirt-only
model is 112 links (from memory -- could be wrong.)
The 15/47 combination will almost certainly require a new chain (to get
those 2 extra links); the 14/41 will not. In the latter case, your rear
axle should still be less than half-way through its adjustment travel.
I've run both above combinations with no noticeable problems. And with my
dirt-only model, I ended up sticking with a 14/47 -- this low gearing is
nice to have in really tight situations.

I just had my yearly check-in with Raul and it appears all is very well. Raul, is glad to continue to
be the KLR and now DR contact for the two lists and for the modified without the dip seats. He said
that he has been amazed at the response since we made the contact with him. He said that on KLR's no
one orders the standard seat anymore. I asked him about lister Dean Harrison's miscue. Dean ordered a
modified and received a standard. Raul said he talked to Dean earlier this week and acknowledged that
Dean had ordered correctly and the factory had made the mixup...they're doing an exchange at no charge
to Dean. We've come a long way on this one.
No for the DR's. He said he can do the same treatment for the DR. So, I ordered one from him. The
price has gone up a bit...$296 in leather delivered. If you want a modified Corbin without the dip
for a KLR or DR contact Raul directly at Corbin. 1-800-538-7035. Standard disclaimer.

Subject: Re: (dr350) Gear ratios and chains
Iain,
Like Bryan, my '94 dirt model works perfect in the mtns. with 14/47; stock is
15/44. With the lower O/A gearing, all six speeds can then be used: first is low
enough for rock gardens, and sixth is good enough for fire roads, and I
shouldn't be going any faster than that.
On first pass I prefer to go larger in the back since then there will be more
teeth to carry the load/stress on the transmission components as the engine
tugs, and the chain will less likely clear the protective swing arm rubber block
with more space to spare than with a smaller countershaft sprocket. But if you
don't want to add chain links, then go with 14 on the front, then poss. a few on
the back later if need be.
In addition, I like steel rear sprockets as they last longer than aluminum and
hold up to rocks better. After 2,000 dirt miles mine still look fine, maybe as
most of the terrain in SoCal is dry year-'round and not as abrasive like wet mud
or sand cound elsewhere.

FWIW, Mick, my 95 SE is the same way. Also, it is much smoother shifting
after it has been ridden 15 min or so.
