Hammy, You are correct most duel sporters are setup lean I just worked on a 93XR
250L and had to richen up the pilot as well as the main. It starts and runs much
better now.if you are going to run it in the dirt the rear sprocket should be
changed I had to machine a bracket to move the chain guide forward one bolt hole
I used a 52 tooth and 14 on the front. This guy runs in the dirt all the time and
it works fine these are heavier than DR's all steel tank battery etc. If it ran
out of oil you might check the rocker cam followers they take it tough when this
happens.hope this has been some help. Jesse

I have a 96 DR350SE and after many mods to make it lighter and more suitable
for trail usage, I got to the point where it is necessary to make it a
little stronger, concerning going up hills. I just bought a 14 new front
sprocket (the original was 15/41) keeping the same rear. My idea was to keep
up with plain DR350, since I have put Garacross MT18 tires, front and rear,
the DR350 uses 14/41. Has anyone tried the same, or has any suggestion ?

Good move.
>I've seen alot of talk about the JXNEEDLE/SPRING but I've
gathered that is for the CV carb.
Correct.
>Will I need to tune the pump carb when I install it? I see
that Thumper Racing recommends a 130 or 132.5 main jet.
Use the jets that come with the air box (if they are included.)
>Does that make the fuel/air mix richer?
Yes.
>Does the T-handle apply to this carb and what does this adjuster do?
Yes.
>Do I need to change the pilot jet, air jet, or needle?
Not for the T-handle.
>Also, I plan to have the 435cc bore kit installed with a
Megacycle CAM this winter. What additional changes will I
need to make then?
Drew Smith, Scott's and Thumper do not recommend a cam for the stock bore nor
435 kit, CG & White Bros. do. I have heard two bad stories about cams, but Tom
Warr has had good life out of his. I understand it's the hardening process; some
say OEM is hardest (Rockwell), others say aftermarket is fine.
My pers. experience is the power spread/gains from a high-comp. piston and/or
added displacement (441 in mine) was more than enough.

Hi,
I changed the front sprocket on my '98 DR350SE to 14 and saw a dramatic
improvement. The bike has more bite and I don't see a difference off
the top end.
Does anyone know if the DR350 and DR350SE use the same rear sprocket?
I was going to put my 15 front back on and change the back to a 44 -
but I can only find a 43. Does anyone know why this is so?

Mark, no they are not the same the S model has rubber cushions built into the hub
to reduce shock to the transmission and the bolt pattern is not the same.
Jesse PS try Sprocket specialist.

Subject: (dr350) sprockets
14/43 is a very good compromise for S models, this is the original
gearing for the early years and works well, also this is why 43 teeth
rear sprockets are more available. I believe 14/47 was the DR dirt only
original gearing, may be different now.
Aftermarket cams work pretty good on the 385 motor, probably overkill on
the 441, mine still works fine, had it since 96.
I believe the cam question is marketing, smaller bore needs cam and
carb, If you sell 100cc big bore with machined cases, costs for a cam
and carb would be prohibitively expensive. Sure people have done all of
the above but not a lot.

Subject: Re: (dr350) Oil Specification
You've opened Pandora's box with this one; there are probably more opinions
on using automobile oil vs. bike oil than Carter's got pills.......
I'm not a petroleum engineer but given the vastly different environments of a
relatively slow turning, water cooled auto engine and the high rpm, high heat
conditons in your air cooled DR (plus the additional stresses of a gearbox
and a wet clutch), I could see where there might be a difference in these
types of oils. But then I've never heard of an owners manual for any bike
requiring "motorcycle only" rated oils.....
I run full synthetic Castrol bike oil in my DR; the bike revs faster, has
better clutch action (smoother) and the gearbox shifts much better (not as
notchy as when using petro oils). IMHO, I buy the best oil I can find since
it is THE vital fluid to allow these air-cooled 4-stroke engines to have a
long and happy life.
I don't worry about whether the Castrol is engineered for a motorcycle 'cause
it says right on the container "not for use in automobile engines".

15/41 = 2.733 - apparently this is stock for the SE models
15/43 = 2.866
15/44 = 2.866
15/46 = 3.066 - this is what I use from 1996-May 99
15/47 = 3.133 - this is what I am running now, only becuase I counldn't find a steel 46 tooth.
14/41 = 2.928 - apparently this is stock for dirt models
I do mostly dirt road and trail riding with my SE model. I have changed the sprockets to 47 on the rear and kept the 15 on front.
