Subject: (dr350) front forks
I have a 98 DR SE model. It has the same forks as the dirt model. In the
catalogue it reads fully adjustable preload for both the front and
rear.Is there a preload adjustment for the front forks? If so where is it
and how does it work.
Thanks ,John

John,
If your forks have preload adjustment it will be at the top of the fork
leg, on older models ( like mine) it is a large slot for a flat blade
screw driver to turn the fork spring in or out for more or less spring
tension. I am not sure about the new models exactly but if you have any
adjustment it will be there on the top. Many forks have graduated lines
scribed in the side of the fork to make both sides equal in adjustment.
Hope this helps,
Jim A.

John,
I have a '98 DR350 Dirt. The only way to adjust spring preload on these
forks is to add/change spacers above the springs. The spring preload
adjuster of the older models was replaced by rebound dampening adjusters.

Matt/John
Spacers will do the job, that is not exactly ' externally adjustable'.
On the other hand, I would trade my easy preload for your better forks
any day. BTW, you guys who don't like the RMX need to give it time, it
takes awhile after riding a DR. I love my DR but the RMX is a Cadillac
compared to it. Makes my DR front end feel like a jackhammer.

My 98 dr has both adjustable rebound and damping on the front and rear.I
weigh about 165 and have no idea how to set it up.I would like it to be
set up as close to a dirt bike as possible.Where I ride there are a lot
of whoops and short hills.Any help or ideas i'd appreciate.I also plan
on getting the koubas very shortly.

Jim,
Jim & Others,
...though you all might want to know what I experienced last weekend.
Traded a friend for the day, my DRX441 for his '94 RMX. Here is what he said,
RMX vs. DRX:
DRX is taller (stock DR is a comfy couch). Starts w/one kick (it's a '94 dirt;
sorry Gino & other SEers: no button for the pinky/donut/coffee pose). The front
will stand up w/throttle; doesn't need to be wound up going on hills. Overshoots
turns before learning technique(?) With RMX suspension, there's no excuse for
not going fast (thanks, bud :-/): this is *not* your dad's DR.
Here's what I have to say, DR vs. RMX:
Burbles off of idle, even with jetting changes. Fairly easy to light up. Feels a
bit lighter, thinner - nice change. Whoa! mid-range hit; easily stays on top of
whoops; shoots forward like a mild rocket. Back end easy to whip out on turns if
need be. Less forgiving if out of peak power spread, but re-entry is just a
clutch pull or gear shift away - recovers fast. Jumps predictably. No
compression braking :-o Deflects more off of rocks/roots. Not as much vibration
as expected (piston one year old - needs replacing). Better gas mileage than
anticipated. Can be trail ridden, chugged if so desired, but more fun when
pushed.

Hi ,
Yes , the only way to adjust preload on the front is to shim the spring, the
handlebar also must come off, in order to get the caps off the top of the
forks. I use a PVC pipe , same diameter as the spring , cut in 5/8" length .
( clean it very good , from plastic pieces ,and shavings) Do one side at the
time, use a tie down strap to pull the front down , so can get get to the
dampening rods, you need to unscrew it from the cap , (a 14 and 17 mm
wrench,) to get the spacer in, once done , i adjusted the rebound screw all
the way in, to compensate for the added spring tension.

Hi Rob,
Your owners manual goes through the stuff that needs to be check, and
changed .
The most important part of the first service is , first oil change ,
grease where fitting are and where you think it is necessary , chain
adjustment , check, readjust valve clearance , than check steering head
bearings, and other bolts and nuts for tightness, like front , rear
wheel, triple clamp bolts, spooks on the wheel cables , battery
connections , and other stuff that could come loose.
Just give it a good look over.
If you can do the valve adjustment , the rest should be easy.
George.

I think someone commented on aftermarket tanks for the DRS bikes. I saw =
a Clark tank on a DRS350 yesterday. I have the Acerbis tank. I believe =
both are 4 gallons.
=20
The look similar, though the Clark is less ugly. The Acerbis has some =
concave places into which my knees fit, and the front part of the tank =
acts as a fairing for my legs. The Clark tank is rounder, though still =
hangs down quite a bit. =20
=20
The owner of the Clark tank told me it was difficult to mount. Mounting =
points did not line up and he had to do several modifications. My =
Acerbis tank fit perfectly.
The big difference in the two is the thickness of the plastic. The =
Clark tank is much thinner than the Acerbis. I can attest to how tough =
that Acerbis is, after now about 4 years of constant abuse (trail =
riding, motocross jumps, lots of crashes).
=20
My friend said he was sorry he chose the Clark tank (he did so because =
it is about $60 cheaper), and will replace it with an Acerbis if it =
breaks.
Does IMS still make a tank for the DRS?
