Guy,
Thanks for the write up. We plan on going again this Sunday, same place/time,
and as usual, everyone is invited for this casual, scenic ride to the top of
Alamo in the Los Padres NF, where the air smells sweet like pines and the
temperatures are mild. What did you think of those vistas?
I rode Bruce's RMX last weekend, and sure like that mid-range hit and the
shaving of a few pounds; wouldn't mind having one of those for enduros. Know
anyone wanting a set-up DRX441?

Subject: (dr350) DR Day
Those of you who in Southern Calif. who couldn't make it on Sunday June 13,
to the DR get-together in Hungry Valley missed out. Trail host, John Gill
led us up Alamo Mtn. for views of Lockwood Valley, Mt. Pinos and Frazier Mtn.
Off-camber turns and ruts and rocks on the fireroads made for great testing
time on our Drs. I learned so much from John and his heavily-modified DR:
MagicAir box, modified stock exhaust, 441cc kit, WER damper... the first time
I gassed it in first gear I almost went over backwards! The most important
change made to his compared to my stock DR though is definitely the
incredible stoutness and straight-line stability of his front-end..the RMX
upside-down forks and triple-clamps. My spindly 43mm stock forks even with
26lb springs and Rac-tech Emulators adjusted to full comp. just don't give
the confidence that RMX forks give because they simply are too flexy.
DirtBike July 99 issue seems to agree in their Lightweight Fourstroke
Shootout as sadly our DR is at the bottom of the list saying the bike is like
a "pinball at any pace above sedate" and a "chassis that really needs a
re-write" Where to find an RMX front end and can I afford it ? will a
Summers Racing fork brace @ 200 bucks be an alternative? I do know Johns DR
doesn't even feel like a DR... it's a bike that's much faster and easier to
ride than a stock DR and now I'm all fired up about improving mine... I also
got to spend some time on the Suzuki RMX, as you all know a completely
different style of riding is used on the 2-stroke and the motor had to be
kept in a narrow RPM band or I would bog down low or overrev on top... not as
forgiving as the fourstroke DR motor.

Mike,
I am willing to walk you though the whole process but what follows should
suffice for now as you explore your options.
The RMX front end (W/USD forks) bolts right up, as long as you machine the top
portion of the RMX stem 0.010" to fit the stock DR top bearing; the bottom one
is identical. You can reuse the DR stem but the RMX one is thicker tubing. I
used the RMX front wheel; the hub has more disc bolts and the bearings/axle is
larger; the rim appears a little more serious too.
My new front end is off a '91, but I believe any year will do. The first two
years ('89-'90) were KYBs, thereafter Showas. The RM forks/shocks aren't much
different. I chose the RMX because of enduro valving/spring seemed better suited
to my off-road style.
The rear is a little different; it bolts on with no modification but the exhaust
needs to have an "s" bend inserted to go around the piggyback reservoir of the
RMX.
The results this work are beyond belief; you have to experience it to fully
appreciate it.

After getting my brains beat out this weekend I am also giving serious
consideration to a major change to my front end. When the forks where stock
they were very wishy washy. I went to some heavier springs and now the bike
handles the heavy stuff well but is very busy on small stuff. It just seems
like you cant tune these forks like you can on other dirt bikes. I have come
to the conclusion that I need a different set of forks. Now I know some of
you out there are wizards at this stuff so your help will be much
appreciated. By the way I have a 95 dirt only DR.
1. If I go to the RMX forks is it a strait bolt up?
2. Is there a particular model year or years I need to look for?
3. Can RM forks be used? If so apply questions 1 and 2 for RM.
4. Are their any other good options Im missing?
Help on this would be much appreciated.

I have a really cool rack for my DR, built by Dual Star in Seattle, WA (USA)
425-776-7433. Last I knew, they were $150 US.
It is all stainless steel and I have put it through quite a beating. At one
point I strapped chainsaw do it and did some pretty serious trail riding.
We needed the chainsaw to clear some trails.

Subject: (dr350) New gear came in today...
Hey,
I just go my new gear in today, bought pants, jacket, fanny pack, and
gloves. Love to hear that ups guy knockin at my door! Anyway, I got
the Answer Summit jacket and pants and they seem to be pretty good
quality. The pants were a little large, so I took them to the local
tailor, he said he could fix them right up, so I'll wait and see. The
jacket seems pretty tough too, It has about five pockets on the front,
and a built in fanny pack/storage area on the back. I also got an
answer dual sport fanny pack, that thing is HUGE! The gloves are the
MSR deerskin gloves, they are very soft, incredibly soft. I got all
this for about $300 from Jeff at MXsouth, I dont think I got ripped
off. One thing that is very nice about it all, is the lack of
flashiness, no crazy "NO FEAR," labels or anything like that. Anyone
else wear this stuff? How "water resistant," is it really? Somebody
posted a while back that they spray their gear with Thompsons wood deck
sealer to waterproof it????!!!! I bet that smells wonderful? I dont
know.. maybe it does...
If you want to take a look at it all, go to www.mxsouth.com By the
way, Jeff is a really nice guy. It was a pleasure doing business with
him.

Subject: Re: (dr350) Front Brakes, side stands, forks
Regarding the front brake - mine is not mushy. I've never done anything to
it besides trying sintered metalic brake pads (which work quite a bit
better, but wear quicker) and now kevlar brake pads (somewhere between stock
and metalic). Although I don't have the nerve, my son can do stoppy's with
the bike. No problem locking it up off pavement. Nice, controlled feel.
Steel braded brake lines are nice, but are they really necessary?
The side stand is a weak point on the bike (either the stand itself, or the
frame mount), and kick starting the bike on the side stand is not a good
idea (as you now know, Joel). I agree that the short or weak amongst us
will be tempted, though (which is how come I know).
RMX forks must be nice, and would be the way to go if you can find them
cheap enough. I really noticed improvement in the front forks by installing
Race Tech Cartridge Emulators and Progressive springs.

buying a Pumper... Anybody know a good source and the approximate price for

Does anyone want to buy a set of Race Tech Cartridge Emulators (W.B. part
#11-509) and Progressive Springs (W.B. part #PS1143)... Only used 1
season...I have all the instructions, just need spacers, but I think that I
just used the adjustion on the top of the fork to set preload... think that
I paid about 200 for the set... will sell for 100... need cash for more

I was reading my copy of Dirt Rider and saw an ad for an Eddlebrock Quick
Silver carb. Looked pretty cool. Has a 32 position needle that can be
adjusted without opening the carb up. It also has an easy adjust remote idle
speed adjuster. One other feature is what they called an onboard fuel cell.
This is supposed to stop fuel starvation on whoops and g-outs. They did not
list a price but they did list the DR as compatible. My off road only DR
already has a pumper so I don't know anything about the CV carb except what I
have heard on this list, which was all bad. I hope this helps. Also if anyone
has tried the Quick Silver let us know how it works.
