Subject: (dr350) Need help w/ Air Box Mod!!!!
I performed the air box mod on my 98 SE and I'm not happy with the results so
far.
After thoroughly warming the bike up I took test ride and the bike seems to
be less responsive and louder with a Bogy type sound. It also seems to
hesitate when I open up the throttle. What do I need to it next besides glue
it back together?

I think that once you remove the top, you need to continue on and
rejet the carb. The reason is because you've modified the air/fuel
mixture by allowing more air. Now you need to work on the carb until
you get it properly 'tuned'.
For tuning a carb there are several things that you can modify.
There are the jets (main and pilot), the position of the needle (clip
position), air screw (which from the sounds of the discussions here
may require a change) and idle screw.
Properly tuning a carb is an art and may need to be redone depending
upon altitude and temperature. Four strokes tend to not be as picky
as two strokes about carb settings, but as you've found, it can make a
difference.
Since you've already taken the top off, I'd recommend continuing on
and get everything set up properly. I haven't taken the top off mine
because I like the gas mileage I'm getting. The only mod I've made is
to add a Uni air filter which made my idle go up a bit and added a
little boost to the bottom end.
Speaking of gas mileage, what is everyone seeing with their bikes?
I've seen lots of reports where people say that the DR gets terrible
mileage, yet mine gets far better mileage than the XR400's I ride
with. I'm seeing about 60 mpg when I'm doing highway and street
riding and about 40 mpg when I do hard dirt biking.
I just rode with a guy that has a '99 YZ250 and we figured that he
was getting about 25 mpg. With a 2 gallon tank, we just barely
finished a 50 mile loop and when we checked his tank it was
practically empty. I had used just a bit over 1 gallon.

Subject: (dr350) Anyone ride the Colorado Trail or Rainbow Trail, CO.?
Hye guys-
I'm headed to Colorado at the end of july. A local guy told me he has
ridden on the Rainbow Trail in the south-central part of state. Looking at
a map, I saw the Colorado Trail fairly close to there.
Anyone ever ride these areas? Any recommendations for good trail within
50+/- miles of Gunnisson?
Also, what is the basic low down on where you can ride:
National Forest land?
Burea of Land Mngmnt land?
other?
I've never been off-road in CO. before, so any advice appreciated.
One other thing: I've upped my main jet 3 sizes over stock to work well
with the exhaust & intake mods I've done, and have an adjustable pilot
valve. Can I hope to run well at high altitudes just by leaning out my
pilot valve, or should I install smaller main jet and/or move needle down a
notch before I leave Dallas? (trailering the bike)

For the record....I think that nobody should mess with their stock airbox
UNLESS they are also willing to get into their carb & do the
jetting/needle/spring mods that has been common traffic on the list since
the beginning.
Hammy, this is what you need to do: take your carb off, install larger main
jet (135-140), Scott T-handle pilot valve, JX needle & spring. Then, you
might need to take it on & off 2-3 more times before you get everything
dialed in just right! It is a hassel, but worth it in my & most people's
opinion....the DR is alot more fun with the extra power you can liberate
with about $60 & a few hours of work. If you arent prepared to do this,
then duct tape or silicon glue the top of your airbox back on, since it will
run better than it does now w/o further mods.
Good luck

Another thing to think about is exhaust. If you are even the least bit
interested in upgrading your exhaust you might as well do it now. That way
you will only have to jet your carb once.

Generally you are ok with both especially if you stay on the trails/roads and avoid
any special areas for non-motorized vehicles. Just get a good local map intended for
off-road/mountain bike use....

On the KLR's that came from around the country no one complained about the jetting but
Colorado is higher than Utah. I would bring one size smaller jet and be prepared to
change the needle setting and pilot...

I purchased Pro Taper's with the CR bend and the universal clamps. What a
huge difference it made! I really feel like I have much better control and a
more comfortable ride position. They were worth every penny.

Mike Walburn did a couple of technical clinics at Moab and recommended AFAM...anyone
try these? Mike, if you have your ears on what bend did you recommend for the DR?

To Interested ones concerning protapers I am using the pro taper version of the DR bend
and they are great I also have applied clamps with the extra tall risers that are off
set so you can move them forward and rearward by turning the risers a half turn
around. Jesse

I get about 40 to 45mpg on the trail or in town, and a little over 50 mpg on
the highway. I have the airbox opened up, a White Bros. filter, and 140
main jet, with stock pilot and the air screw turned out about 2 turns.

I commonly get about 65-70 miles before I have to flip the reserve lever
if it's highway riding. Here's the wierd part when I fill up it only
takes just over a gallon to fill it(1.2).If it's a 2.4 gallon tank with
a half gallon reserve and i'm on reserve at the station it should take
approx. two gallons to fill right? The bike has never came close to
taking two gallons when i'm on reserve. If i'm in the woods beating up on
it i'd say 40 miles per gal is a pretty good est.
