What is mandatory is; a helmet. If you are riding off road, I would
also recommend boots, gloves, and as much body armor as you can stand.
I've tried wearing elbow pads, but they bug me too much and take away my
concentration. I've ridden in the past without knee guards, but I won't
make that mistake again.
Here's what I wear when I know I'm only street riding; I'll wear a
street helmet and gloves. I wear a good quality street motorcycle
leather jacket with padding built in. I'll wear jeans, hiking style
boots (if it's a long ride, tennis shoes for my short commute to work),
and yes, I have gone down at over 50 miles an hour and tested out my
stuff :-(
For riding off road I wear MX style helmet and goggles, gloves,
Acerbis back/chest protector with shoulder pads (I tend to bounce off
trees so sometimes I'll put a shoulder into them :-), Fox jersey,
bicycle short, Fox 180 pants (I try to get the black/blue stuff so it
doesn't shout out "look at me!"), Aplinestar boots and AXO knee/shin
guards. If it gets cold I just throw on whatever light wind breaker
type jacket I can find. These normally do a good job of keeping body
heat in (which I generate quickly while riding off road) and are light
and easy to stow once I don't need them anymore. Again, all of my gear
has been seriously tested...
For riding dual sport, it would depend on the ride and the people I
ride with. Once, I was riding with some fast guys that would include
almost all black top with some high speed fire road. I wore my street
riding equipment for that. For a dual sport ride coming up at Tahoe, I
plan on wearing my off road gear because I know there's going to be some
single track stuff.
When I bought my CR back in the 80's, I included a set of riding gear
as part of the amount of money I'd have to spend. I've seen guys wear
just t-shirts and jeans with a hemlet and ride off road, and for the
most part they're fine, but when they go down, they get pretty bloody
quickly. I try not to scare my wife when I come home and I'd rather
concentrate on trying to ride better rather than concentrate on not
crashing.

The whole project has lost some of its allure since I found out the tire is
actually a 120/90 18. I'm almost certain it will fit my DR350SE.
I'll be holding a cup of coffee in the left hand, just as I do when I push
that magic button on the right handlebar.

I have been known to ride alone. Both on the street, and off road. I
love exploring the area around where I live, and there are hundreds of
miles of excellent street and well maintained dirt roads. This is why I
bought a dual sport bike.
> What precautions do you take?
If I'm going somewhere, I'll let my wife know where I'm going and
approximately what time I should be back. I take along a cell phone to
let her know if my plans change. I pack a spare tube, tube repait kit,
mini tire pump, lots of tools, plugs and a small first aid kit. I have
a Moose rear fender bag attached to the Suzuki rear rack.
> How do you feel about it philosophically speaking?
Once I went camping in the middle of nowhere by myself with just my
CR. In some aspects, it was incredible. All alone with no one around
you can really do some soul searching. But, and this is another major
reason why I bought my DR, when I was far away from camp the CR
stopped. It was getting late and I started to worry that I wouldn't get
back to camp and may have to spend the night out there. It's amazing
the amount of things you start to hear when you're in the forest by
yourself :-) Fortunately the bike started and I made it back, but I
vowed to buy a reliable, durable bike.
I know that there's no way to predict and account for everything that
can happen, that's what makes life and doing things like this fun.
Personally, I feel very confident when I ride alone. My trail riding
abilities are good, and I feel pretty comfortable with my survival
skills if it comes to that.

I have one from CG. It awakens the snap - if we can call it that - off the
bottom or whenever instant throttle is needed, and adds more over rev., plus the
filter doesn't clog as soon due to the increased surface area. Two drawbacks are
1) it is louder (but no more than cutting the top off the stocker) and 2)
water/debris has a better chance at getting in. I sandwiched neoprene between
the frame and top of the box on the sides and back; noise is way down and
water/debris much less likely to get in.
CG doesn't offer them anymore but Jesse (jesse@is-plus.net) does. At $200+ it
may be outside of your budget but worth it; much more cost effective than a new
pipe (which just makes more noise but no noticable gain in power.)

New to the list and just started looking at some modification sites.
Where can one get the Cycle Gear airbox everyone raves about? I've
tried three search engines and the only mention is on people's pages
listing their mods.

earlier I'd asked if anyone knew about some "body armour shirt" things.
Looking thru Chapparall catalog, I found:
Thor Bodyguard Protector: $179
EVS BSB2 Ballistic Shock Block Jersey: $129
and local outfitter sells-
Knox Lycra Bodyguard Shirt: $179
Anyone ever use (or even try on?) any of these?
I'm wondering if they would be easier/better to use than just the elbow &
shin/knee protectors I was going to get.

As I recall, Mike Walburn suggested not going larger than 120's but I wonder
if
we couldn't go bigger. My XR200 tires are bigger than that...
Kurt >>
Check your XR again man!
I am not saying that you can't fit a larger tire in there, that's not the
point. (I used to wedge small blocks in the Chevy Vegas too!) There is a
difference between a two stroke and a four stroke's traction requirements. A
120 is just right for the DR 350's low power output. You should always have a
small amount of "slip" with a four stroke.

Subject: (dr350) (no DR content) What is the proper starting drill on CR125?
I bought a 1996 CR125 to make a few bucks on. When I saw it, the guy
started it (2nd-3rd kick) & rode it around. Then I started it, rode around,
stopped, & restarted. that was 5 days ago. Yesterday, I started it on the
first kick (90 degrees, choke on, fuel on, no throttle) & ran it for about
15 seconds, but when I went to let it idle, it slowly died. I could not
restart it. Couldn't start it today either. I emptied tank & bowl & put
fresh 50:1 gas in. I think I've tried every combination of choke, no choke,
choke w/ throttle in various positions, etc... When I pull the plug it is
always pretty wet....is wet=fouled?
What is the optimum starting drill on this bitch?
Any help you 2-stroke guys can give me with this would be appreciated!

Bryan,
I have an RMX & had that problem at first. A couple of things may help,
always use some throttle when kickstarting, this is hard to remember
after starting my DR but my RMX has to have throttle. Try to use up the
gas in the float bowl before you put it up, don't know why exactly but
it helps, plus shake bike to stir up the fuel if it has been sitting,
some oil will settle in the bottom after awhile.

I agree with mike on the tire issue.A 120 gives plenty of "grab" for the
power output of the DR.Aything bigger may hinder things.Anything out
there you can't tackle wth a 120 wont be any different with something
bigger.I use the MT-21 and have no compliants(120/90).It's not that
hard to plant 30 rear wheel horses.

Subject: (dr350) revving problem
My 91 DR has recently developed a strange problem. When I let off the
throttle the engine will not stop revving at around 6K. I checked the
mechanical linkage of the throttle assembly and it appears ok. The only
way to get the bike to slow down is to play with the clutch while stoped
and basically stry to stall out the bike, then it will usually stay at
idle, at least until I start up again ride and pull in the clutch and let
off the trottle. Any ideas what could be wrong? (it is the stock Mikuni
carb)

A wet plug on a two stroke could be fouled as there will be oil on it as
well as gas. Clean up the plug and then check for spark. If you have a
healthy spark, I would think your problem is in the fuel delivery system.
The first thing I would do is to tap the float bowl gently with a plastic
hammer in case your float is stuck. Also check your choke system to make
sure it is shutting off. If that doesn't do the trick, make sure your
airbox is not plugged. After that, it's pull the carb and make sure there
is no debris in any of the circuts.
Two strokes generally have a healthy spark so if you don't have one or it is
intermintent, the problem may be the electrics (black box ?) A properly set
up two stroke should start fairly easily.
Good luck - Harral
