Will the Economy rear rack fit the dirt-only DR? I think the Dualstar will
but the cost is prohibitive...
Thanks to everyone out there for the DR tips... Especially the point made by

1a. speed up and the rut will not jerk the bike around as much
2. The smoother the terrain, the better
2a smooth is boring
3. Short shift it baby!!
3a Shift it longer, keep the revs and power up
4. Hills are meant for avoiding.
4a Hills are meant for climbing
5. Mud WILL slam you face first!
5a Mud are great obstacles to practice wheeling over
6. Prepare to become proficient at straightening tweaked front ends.
6a Good thing to learn
7. Thou shall rejet!
7a Yes you shall
8. mirrors are good branch catchers!
8a Get some Ken Shaun foldable mirrors and fold them in to the bars in the

9. Sand WILL slam you shoulder first.
9a Another obstacle that requires the lightening of the front wheel.
10. Modify your stock DR so none of the above happens so easily!

My 97 DR-SE won't start.....so I started tracing wire, troubleshooting. The
clutch interlock switch was found to be bad......if you want to defeat this,
remove the headlight shell, trace your wire from the switch to the bundle of
wire harnesses behind the headlight shell, disconnect the two from the clutch
switch(one has a male connector, the other a female) and reconnect the
harness wires together........they must have been thinking ahead to all us
offroad motonuts when they engineered that one (for a change!!!) I just did
this a few minutes ago, so it works!

Bret,
The cylinder boring should cost maybe $30- $ 40 depending where you
take it. You will need a new head and base gasket. The labor part is
where the $$$ comes in unless you do it yourself. If not you can save
some by taking the motor out of the frame, just take it to the shop.

Thanks to all who gave advice on how to get the forks off; it was no sweat.
I've decided to send the forks to Bob Bell in CA. to have Race Tech
cartridge emulators & new springs installed. I'll let everyone know how it
goes. Also, thanks to Norm who imparted substantial wisdom over the phone
yesterday.
Since the bike is laid up now, and I'd like to avoid buying a manual as long
as possible, can anyone give me some instructions for getting the shock out?
I have plenty of jacking-from-floor AND hoisting-from-ceiling
capabilities, so if there is an "easy" way to do this...lemme know! I'm
gonna put on a heavier spring and Kouba links as per Norm, but I forgot to
ask him about changing the fluid while I have it out. I assume this would
be a smart thing to do while I have it off. What weight of fluid is called
for? are there likely deteriorated seals?
Thanks guys-

How does the Dunlop K139 do off road in all of the following categories: mud,
sand, rocks & hardpack? Is it for hard surface, intermediate, soft conditions? I
know that's asking too much of one tire, being DOT apprv'd, but please let us

Bret,
I've heard shops charge as high as $75.
I have a stock barrel/jug, piston & pin off of my '94; has >200 miles on it
since new, so it isn't even broken in. I'll swap you for an even $100, and you
pay shipping (to/from SoCal). That's the cost of a(n aftermarket) piston set
alone, and it would bring you back to fact. specs. If money is a concern, then
you could send me the $ when it becomes available.
Moreover, to prove I'm not in this for personal gain, I truly recommend you get
a 385 kit to get the full benefit of your trouble when removing the top end (it
is not that difficult, though.) Why not get a little boost out of your effort?
Since $ is a concern, and if you have reasonable mechanical aptitude and good
tools - including a torque wrench - then consider doing the work yourself; I did
my own.
Why do I have these extra parts? I wanted more boost out of my DR, but I wanted
the ability to go back in the event the 441 kit makes an animal out of it;
hence, the another barrel was purchased to the new sleeve. It didn't change the
character as much as anticipated, but did bring about a stronger personality.

Bret, John is right about the 385, I misread your post, thought you
already had the piston. Go for the 385 if you need a new bore anyway. I
paid $40 for the 385 cc borejob, remember you need the piston to give
them when you have it bored, regardless what size you go with.

Getting the shock out isn't a big deal. You just need to disassemble the
rear half of your bike :) From memory, it's something like....
1) Remove the side panels, seat, and rear wheel
2) Unbolt the shock reservoir mount from the frame
3) Remove the boot between the carb and the airbox
4) Remove the airbox
5) Remove the bolt at the joint between the old links and the swingarm
6) Use a strap to hold the swingarm up, out of the way.
7) Unbolt the shock bolts top and bottom. Take care to note where all the
pieces of the linkage go.
8) Work the shock out.
I'd highly recommend the $60-70 for a factory manual. You'll need to torque
settings at a minimum, plus it has some nice diagrams showing how everything
goes.

A good start would be to check out MX Tuner's article on shock work:
http://www.off-road.com/dirtbike/mar99/db101/db101shock.html
For the DRs, 10W oil is suggested. I would think that for your '95, the
seals are still okay, but you do need to take care to not damage them during
removal and installation.
The valve for the bladder is located on the back of the reservoir, beneath a
metal shield. You can pry that shield out easily with a screwdriver and
chuck it -- I don't know what value that adds, except for perhaps keeping
people from fiddling with the valve. Probably as safety thing (stock
nitrogen pressure is something like 147 psi.)
Getting the shock filled with only fluid and _no_ air during reassembly is
the tricky part. Beyond that, it's pretty straightforward.
I just finished installing a Gold Valve in my shock, so if you have any more
questions about the details of shock maintenance, please feel free to ask.
(I'm no expert, but at least it's fresh in my mind...)
From what I understand, net.wisdom suggests that suspension fluid should be
changed annually. And after seeing the disgusting liquid that I poured out
of my 3 year-old shock, I must agree.
