Subject: RE: (dr350) K&N filter
Date: 01 Nov 1999 09:45:53 -0600
Don't cut the air box out until you are ready to rejet. It will run like
crap if it runs at all. Way to lean. My DR was a 96 DRS. I completely
converted it to dirt, and was doing some serious jumping on the thing.
Suspension was to weak for what I wanted, but it would haul ass after the
mod's. Cutting the baffle out made a noticeable difference in horsepower,
wasn't to loud, and didn't cost nowhere near what an after market exhaust
would cost. It was comparable to the sound of a MegaMax.

Hi David,
What year was your DR350? I have a '98 DR350SE and I was thinking
about cutting the end off the stock exhaust and removing the baffle and
then welding it back on but I'm unsure about doing it. I have my main
jet to 132.5 now and I'm still hearing popping so I think I'm still
running lean. I haven't removed the top of the airbox yet either.
Thanks for any information.

Forward from robertlmorgan@worldnet.att.net:
I have been tasked with the problem of exploring the possibility of
purchasing some motorcycle parts from a Canadian source. Can anyone help?
Here is the deal. My friend (Elden Carl) is searching for a vented float
bowl for a DR 350se, 97-99 vintage. The American emissions carb has deleted
this feature and he really wants one. He was curious if the Canadian carb
for the KLR had a vented float bowl. Anybody got a buddy at a dealership?
He is also curious about prices for various engine chains, he has heard they
are much cheaper in Canada. He is looking for:
1. 95 KLR cam chain part # 92057-1226
2. 95 KLR balancer chain part # 92057-1158
3. 98 KLR cam chain part # 92057-1402
Any help with this info would be much appreciated.
One more thing, if some one could post this info on the DR list I'd be much
obliged.
Thank you, thank you, thank you very much, uh huh.

I've had a closer look to my DR 350 SE, which I've bought four weeks ago
with the hint of the seller "damage in the cylinder had, I think".
Actually
it was very noisy.
One reason for the was a valve clearance of around 0,4mm, another was a
damaged
surface of the exhaust cam, the same with the rocking arm. Because I had
open
the motor already, I went further and had a look to the piston. Looks
ok,
but, and thats my question:
The third piston ring is not easily moveable in his slot, and I can't
see were
this ring is open. The other rings are. Is this normal, or is this
irregular?

I just bolted the new Corbin seat on. I ordered it aircraft carrier
style (made famouse by Gino "totally stock" Pokluda albeit on his
non-stock KLR). I like it. It mated up well against the Ahhhcchherrbiis
Tank. It lowered the seat height an inch at least. Big fat end
for....well...a big...
Also, took my new to me DR650SE for a two-up ride with my son. It has a
lot more suspension than the KLR and much easier handling. I was
impressed.
Over the weekend, I bolted up Jesse's Vortex airbox and the results were
impressive. I now have a wheelie machine.

Hi Jurgen, The third ring is the oil ring and is made up of three pieces two thin steel and
one segmented section the thin ones are removed first and then the segmented one how ever you
should measure the piston and cylinder bore to determine the clearance it should be less than.
.120mm or.0047", The bore should be checked at the top middle and bottom at a front to back
and side to side location. If any location is more than 79.075mm or 3.113" the cylinder should
be bored to the next oversize. The cam Should be replaced and the rocker arms should be
hardface welded and reground or replaced with new. It sound s like it has been run without oil
or the oil pump has failed for some reason the clutch cover should be removed to check the oil
pump drive gear train. If you have more questions please feel free to contact me.

Subject: (dr350) DR 350 SE 1999

Hallo!
I've got a few questions about my new DR. She has got 2000 km on her now. If
I do not start her for a few days it's
hard to start. Once I did leave her for 14 days in the garage. When I wanted
to start, it took me about 20 times to push
the electro start button. The temperature is now in my country about +10
celcius. Is this normal? I do not dear to leave her for
2 or 3 months during the winter. She wan't start again in spring. Before I
leave her, I shut the tank and drive her 500-1000m
so that there is not too much fuel in the carb. Any advice is very
apreciated.
I'm thinking of a Corbin seat. But I'm not quite sure because it is very
expansive. Is it woth it? The reason for the corbin is
that if I'm going for longer distances (100 km and more) I can feal the
pain.
Many people told me to change the rear spring to a stronger one. As I'm not
an experienced off road driver, and most of the time
I'm going quite slow, I'm not sure if this is necessary at the moment. Last
week I made to longer drives with my girl friend. Together we have 140 kg.
We took unpaved roads too. The spring is in stock mode, so not put as strong
as it could be (in the middle position), and we had no problem at all. So
maybe the stock spring is ok for me. What do you mean?
There is one thing which I really dont't like on my bike. You can never be
absolutely sure if the amount of oil is ok, because
the measurement is not very accurate. I've mounted an oil thermometer and
find this is very important. I was very surprised
how long it can take until the oil gets warm.
In the first week I put the key to the parking position instead to the off
position. The battery was empty when I came back.
This brought me to the following: If I mount a kick start, is it possible to
start her without a battery? And if she runs, is it
possible to switch off the battery and drive without? If this is possible,
what modification is necessary. I do not like the
feeling to be completely reliant on a battery. I had a bike without battery,
so maybe this would be possible on a DR as
well with not too much modification.
Did someone ever mount cases on the side left and right? They have to be of
differnt size because of the the exaust. Is that
right? And if mounted, is there still enough space for 2 people?
Thanks a lot!

Hi Jurgen, I believe that the excessive wear on the rockerarms and cam was from a lack of
lubrication which causes quick wear to these parts resulting in the excessive clearances. I would
check inside the clutch cover where the oil pump gear is and make sure it is ok. any more questions
please contact me. I would recommend getting a Suzuki shop manual to guide you, the factory one .

I have a Corbin seat on my DRS 350 and really like it. It fits on the bike
well, lowers the seat height about 2", and is comfortable enough for all day
rides. Looks nice, good workmanship. If you value comfort, it is worth the
money.
I just put a Bill Mayer saddle on my KTM - it is even more comfortable. He
builds one on the stock seat pan, for about the same money. Let me know if
you want more details. TW

Dude, it amazes me that your plug is still white. Are we talkin the same
part of the plug? I dont really remember what the insulator part of the
plug looked like when I tried the 147.5 (albeit w/ a larger pilot at same
time), but what I looked at was the amount of deposits on the END...you
know, where the two prongs come close to the post that runs thru the middle
of the plug (electrode), there was tons of powdery soot. I wonder if you're
considering whats going on with the very end of the plug?....I think THAT is
what is important. BTW, I'm no mechanic....not too sure of the validity of
my observations. But I've gone by them for many years w/ many bikes, w/
good results. Good luck-

Jesse, Norm, et al will have more worthwhile comments)

I am amazed to see all DRs for sale that have really low mileage - mine is
a '94 and I've racked up 12,012 miles on the ticker since I bought it new
in May of '94. Most of these are dirt miles.
Last year I had to get the top end rebuilt....new valves, piston, rings,
cam chain, cam chain guides.

"Both the DR-Z400 and the DR-Z400E carry a 12-volt, 55 watt headlamp |and
lightweight LED tail amp. The innovative LED tail lamp features bright-red
LEDs implanted in a flexible housing made of translucent and opaque white
elastomers mounted on a flexible epoxy base. the LED tail lamp is very
compact, water resistant and durable and does not generate heat.
The DR-Z400 and DR-Z400E come with a compact mechanical trip meter. The
DR-Z400S features a compact digital instrument cluster, including a
speedometer, odometer, two trip meters with addition and subtraction
capability, and clock, timer and stopwatch functions."
I wonder if these features will make it to U.S.

Here is what this month's Dirt Rider says:
All three versions feature a 55 watt headlight, and the street model has an
instrament panel that includes speedomether, odometer, twin tripmeters (with
addition/subtraction capability), clock, timer, and stopwatch functions.
Sounds electronic to me (like on my KTM Adventure, by the way).
Unfortunately, they (like Cycle World) also state the transmission is only a
5 speed.
By the way, this latest issue of Dirt Rider has a write up on the new liquid
cooled, aluminum framed XR650. Bout time they upgraded that bike (first
since 1990). I hope it comes out n a street legal version.

Date: 07 Nov 1999 20:48:45 -0800
Hi all
I cut the top of of the airbox on my 96 350se and replaced
the main jet, idle air screw, and needle. The bike runs
much better than stock, and pulls easily from idle to red
line. The one thing it could use is a little more low end
power.
I seem to find myself in places where either first
gear is just a little too high or second is not quite low
enough. I think that lowering the overall gearing would
help a lot. What sort of experience does the list have with
changing the sprockets. Is it easier to go one tooth
smaller on the front or a few larger on the rear? Is the
stock chain long enough to let me increase the diameter of
the rear sprocket? If so, by how much?
Thanks

On my '90 DRS 350, the front sprocket is 14 tooth, stock. For trail riding,
I use a 13, or 12. I can change it quickly, even with the bike's tool kit,
at the trail head. Only tricky part is a spring clip. You must loosten the
rear axel, to provide slack in the chain, but removing the wheel or chain,
or changing its length is not necessary. Works good for me. TW

Guys the reason for my DR being low milage and for sale is evendent in
this last 3 day journey to Arkansas.
Left Sat. and drove 400 miles to Little Rock, Ark and stopped by a BMW
rally, Sun. drove 100 miles more to Quitman, Ark to visit son. Went back
to Choctaw,Ark to do 100 more miles of the Trans Ark Trail ( 95% dirt
roads) plus some really nasty side trips off some of these dirt roads (
that I wished I would of been on the DR at times ) Then about an hour
before dark, hauled it down some of Arkansas fine twist, curvey mountain
roads back to Hot Springs and then run home today crusing at 65 to 75
mph for another 400 mile day. Wow 1100+ miles in 3 days.
Plus I have a BMW R11R I just love to do about 10-14K miles a year on.

Andrus, Betcha don't realize that you forgot to mention something in your
Arkansas Trip post. Sounds like you were on your DR350ES but you couldn't
have been because you wished that you were on the DR when you took those
nasty side road trips. Hmmm, were you on your BMW? Nah, the front wheel is
being repaired so I know you weren't on the Beemer. I wonder what you were

I'm running a 14 front and a 45 rear sprockets on my 1995 DR350SE. I just
got back from Moab Utah where I rode the White Rim Trail, Slick Rock Trail

could still cruse at 60 mph on the highway to get there.

I left the 14 front alone & changed to a 48 rear on my 95 SE. I'm really
happy with it. At hiway speed top gear, 1K rpm = 10mph (70mph=7K rpm,
etc..). Low end in first is great for just tractoring up really steep
hills. I did not need a new chain to do this.

Subject: (dr350) Carb issues....
Date: 10 Nov 1999 12:58:53 -0500
Hello all...
I've been lurking on the list for a few weeks now and figured I'd introduce
myself with a few questions.
I'm a mechanical engineer in Massachusetts and quite a motorcycle enthusiast.
I learned to ride on a 1975 DT175 when I was 10 and have been mostly riding
streetbikes for the last 5 years only riding offroad every now and again,
with the same old DT. Two weeks ago I bought Nick Sperduto's old 1990 DR
350S and have been having a blast on it the past couple of weekends.
Anyways, I cleaned out the carb last night because the bike doesn't
settle down to idle quickly and cleaning it didn't seem to help. The
problem isn't the cables and there didn't seem to be any obvious signs
of wear on the slide or anything that would cause it to hang up.
Anyone have any ideas on why the vacuum would persist in such a way that
the bike takes so long ( a few seconds) to return to idle?
Also, I understand that the dirt carb (the TM33 pumper) is a much better
carb - particularly for off road use. To those of you that have swapped
from street carb to dirt carb, did you need new throttle cables and/or
boots? Also, where's a good place to look for used parts? Thanks!!!

Hi Chris, First I would suggest checking for vacuum leaks, 1. At the hose coming from the
petcock to the vacuum port on the carb 2. The rubber manifold at the head interface and the
carb connection. 3. The diaphragm inside the top of the carb. These are the most likely
spots. Did you make sure the pilot jet was clean and open, this is a very small opening about
.013" and this controls the idle circuit along with the fuel screw located under the front of
the carb originally plugged except for a very small hole over it. This is where you adjust the
idle mixture. But needs to be "carefully" drilled out to access the fuel screw. Since the 90
dr/s has a single cable it should work on the pull side of the tm33ss carb that are available
from Thumper Racing. you will also need a dirt model rubber manifold and spacer with a vacuum
port for the fuel petcock operation. I could supply you with a special sleeve for the back of
the carb to interface with your airbox boot or you could just get a Vortex Airbox that
connects right to the dirt carb or the stock cv carb. Which would wake up your dr
significantly. Boy I do ramble don't I any more questions feel free to contact me.

Subject: (dr350) Trip report: Wolf Pen Gap ORV Area near Mena, AR.
Date: 11 Nov 1999 08:52:18 PST
Monday morning I pulled out of Dallas w/ my DR in trailer heading to Mena,
AR to ride an off-road vehicle area I learned about on the net. I'd been to
the area around Mena about 10 times or so on sportbikes...excellent mountain
curves all over the place...but I'd never been off-road there.
Wolf Pen Gap was the BEST trail riding I've EVER done! OK...only riding
off-road since 2/99, but still, this place would appeal to anyone. 42 miles
of interconnected "off-road vehicle only" trails, each marked as EASY, MORE
DIFFICULT, and MOST DIFFICULT. They've used a bulldozer or something to
push up these excellent 2-4 foot high jumps in the middle of the trails
about every 40 yards or so, regarless of whether the trail was flat, curved,
or steep up/down hill! I was probably airborne for a good 10 minutes in the
5 hours I rode out there! Trails crossed creeks, flats, & alot of
mountains. The most difficult trails were a challenge! I know I rode some
45 degree angles up & down the mountains (or big hills, depending on where
you're from). Best time I've ever had off-road. Fall foliage was at its
peak. Only saw a US Forest guy out there in a pickup cruising around....no
other riders at all. The DR performed flawlessly...my suspension & carb
mods have made this bike tons of fun.
I was going to ride the ORV area around Daisy State Park (Lake Greeson), but
my pregnant wife had subltley guilted me in to coming back the same day. It
has 28 miles of trails that follow the lake w/ lots of hills. I'll do it
next time and report back.
I highly recommend Wolf Pen Gap for anyone w/i a day's drive to Mena. There
are a couple of clean, cheap, bike-friendly $26 motels in town (Holiday
Motel, 501-394-2611, on Hwy 71). And I noticed you can camp along the
trails at WPG for free.
Happy Trails-
Bryan in Dallas

The bad news: For those who've been patiently waiting for their next issue
of Dual Sport News and wondering if Ron and I've left the country. The
answer is we've thought of it (g). Seriously, the publisher sent me a rough
draft today, the way things are going it might take another week to get it
to print...so please be patient with us on this first issue. It is coming.
The good news: it looks like a great issue (obviously biased opinion) and
will be the largest issue in DSN's short history...32 pages.

Just a little line from Woodstock to get your attention. After some
thought, I'd like the list to go along with the idea of expanding our
cyber community to all DR's...of course, it will take some time to get
the word out but you can help by spreading it. Remember, a list can have
multiple threads going on at once.
I'm the first new lister, I just bought a '96 DR650SE to join with the
'97 Kientech Vortex equipped 350 Bad Boy. OK, welcome aboard Kurt. Thank
you...thank you very much...it's good to be here.

Hi Jeff, I think every thing is sort of on hold waiting for the new DRZ400 to hit the
showroom floors. Then if the news is positive there will be a mass of DR350's on the market
But, at lower prices than the new stuff. Guys will pick them up and start the process of
tricking them out, the cost will be less due to the low initial investment cost starting a
second phase of tricked out DR350's. Due to an almost 10 year production run of the DR350
this phase will last a while. This is my theory anyway.

Date: 14 Nov 1999 13:55:14
Hi Folks,
i am looking for some tips to get the optimal jetting for my Mikuni TM36 Flatslide carb.
This bitch needs apperently smaller jets than my stock 33 CV carb.
My engine modifications:
Vortex Airbox, 435cc Thumper Racing kit,
Now i installed an 125 mainjet, 20 pilot , screw 2 turns out and the needle in 3/5 position.
Any suggestions?

Hi Ludwig, I think the tm36 flatslide uses hex jets and the numbers do not correspond equally
to the large round jets that fit the tm33ss I would recommend comparing the hole size of a large
round 150 main and your 125main [large hex] out of the tm 36 with gauge pins or the shank of a
number drill to get the size that you want which is about .055" to .059". then the needle and
the needle jet may be totally different also from the tm33ss. I have heard that the tm36 is
very difficult to jet from the guys on the list and have not tried to fit one up myself. I have
had very good luck with the tm33ss but finding a used one is not easy and the cost for a new one
is about $300.00 I will check with some salvage yards and see if I can locate one for you.
My best regards Jesse

Subject: (dr350) Cost for used parts...
Date: 15 Nov 1999 10:55:12 -0500
Hey guys, I need your advice on something.
After this past weekend I realized that I need to do something about my gas
tank. I have a 1990 DR350S and the gas tank with the original rubber bumpers
bounced around so much that I lost the bumpers on one crash (making the tank
REALLY bounce around). Also, with the locking street gas cap, gas pours
out like crazy when the bike goes down. I guessing that with a dirt version
tank both of these will be remedied to some degree. Also, for the rides
that I do, range isn't too much of a problem.
So I talked to a local bike junk yard and I can get a dirt version carb
and a dirt version gas tank for $150. It sounds like a decent deal to
me - what do you guys think?

Hi Chris, Go for it that carb is a $300. item alone when you can find one. You will have to
get the rubber manifold too your cv carb manifold will not work.

I'm new to the list, so please forgive me if this problem has been discussed
to death.
My 1990 DR350S has been having some carb flooding problems of late. I
replaced the needle and seat, which helped, but on my last ride it would not
idle, and the outside of the carb would get wet, at slow speeds only. At
higher throttle positions, it ran fine. I suspect float level problems. I
plan to take it apart this weekend and check it out.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should look for, or how I should
set the float level?
TIA
Pat Coleman

Hi Pat,
I was having the same problems as you last weekend. Adjusting the float
level is not difficult at all, but let me give you one little tip that
I found last week. The manual says to allow the float to sit on its
own as you measure the level. However, the float is heavy enough that it
will compress the spring in the needle under its own weight (which most
floats in my experience do not do). So when I adjusted the level, I
tilted the carb slightly so that the float wasn't pushing the spring
in the needle in at all. Also, there is part of the float 'frame' that
gets pushed down by the float bowl cover. Push that down with your
hand so that you can get an accurate measurement.
Another thing you might want to check is the seat O-ring. If that is
worn out then you should replace it because even with a new needle and
seat and properly adjusted level, if the o-ring isn't sealing then the
float bowl will overflow anyways.

Hi Patrick, you might check the o"ring around the seat part of the needle and seat assembly
however if you put a new assembly in there it should be with a new o'ring. You are correct the
float level sounds like its a little high I would suggest a "factory"shop manual the float
hieght holding the carb upside down should be .570" +-.040" measured between the flat carb
surface and the float with the float assy. in place. hope this helps.

Hi Don, just got through with one like that, but a little liquid wrench and gentle tapping
around the circumfrence expands the outer pipe and a side to side action will eventually
loosen it up oh yes and patience and persistance is the major part of the operation

Wow - I'm really bombarding the list with questions this week...
Anyways, after some responses from the list that agreed that the
deal was half decent, I went down and picked up a carb and gas tank
from a dirt version DR350 to fit to my DR350S. I even got the
boots for the carb thrown in. However, I originally thought that the
DR350S had the mounting provisions for the dirt version tank but
I was wrong. I have a few ideas on how I can make new brackets but
was wondering if anybody else has done this before?
Thanks!

CLINTON/GORE ROADLESS INITIATIVE ACTION ALERT
Following is the opening paragraph of a letter sent by a bipartisan list of
U.S. Representatives to
U.S. Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck. The purpose of the letter, is to
secure a 120 day
extension past the December 20, 1999 deadline for the public to comment on
the Clinton/Gore
Roadless Initiative.
(CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENT) "We urge you to extend the comment period for
review of
the proposed rule-making process regarding roadless areas. We feel that
such a significant policy
requires sufficient time to review the possible impact and the appropriate
scope of the
environmental impact statement. With the current unpredictable legislative
schedule, the upcoming
holiday season, and other related rule-makings requiring comments during
the same period, we
respectfully request an additional 120 days to prepare such comments."
Please contact your own congressional delegation. Call the capitol
switchboard at (202)224-3121
if you don't know their phone numbers (all you need is your zip code). Just
ask your
representative and both your senators to; "please ask Forest Service Chief
Mike Dombeck to
extend the comment period for an additional 120 days on the ROADLESS AREA
NOTICE OF
INTENT."
Your representative can contact Representative Helen Chenoweth-Hage at
(202)225-6611 and
your senator can contact Senator Larry Craig at (202)224-2752 for
additional information.

Date: 18 Nov 1999 15:46:53 EST
My wife and I are gonna sell all our older bike and get new ones. I hope to
get the new DRZ400 :). If any one on the list is interested here they are.
1997 XR200 Bought new in 98. Very low hours. Wife ridden. Baja head light
added. $2,500 .
1995 Suzuki DR350S Bought new in 96. Estimated hours, less than 200. Big
Gun exhaust. K&N filter. Pro Taper bars. Bark busters. $2,100.00
1990 Husqvarna WXE 510. Cosmetically descent. Runs great. Could use fork
seals. This bike will pull stumps! $1,500.00
1986 Honda Night Hawk 700. Looks very clean. Low miles. Runs strong but
could use carb clean and balance. $1,700.00
1986 Suzuki DR100 Looks are average. Runs good but could stand some carb
work. $500.00
We would also consider a trade on a 96 or newer KX 100 or KX 80 big wheel. If
anyone is interested please E-mail us at RALD277@AOL.COM.
Thanks

I would not get your hopes up for getting a DRZ400 soon, I think they will
be in the same boat as the Yamaha YZ/WR400. The dealers will only get a few
for the first year, so they will all be pre-ordered for a cost that is over
the sticker price. I did sit on the DRZ400 at the Del Mar Motorcycle show's
Suzuki booth. It was nice, has better ergonomics than the DR350, and seemed
lighter than my TTR-250. (I guess that's all I can say about, since I only
got to sit on it.) I would not mind getting one a few years from now. I
would lace up some 17" wheels, and bolt on a over-size Brembo disk and
caliper, for a slick looking super motard bike.

Hi
My name is Joe. I have a 93 DR350S that I purchased to relearn some =
dirt skills, possibly with an eye towards riding in Mexico in the =
future. The bike is lightly modified, with an IMS tank and Acerbis =
handguards and I am currently using Metzler Unicross tires. Currently I =
live in Beaverton Oregon and do most of my riding in the coastal =
mountains. I have been riding for thirty years and my other current =
bikes are a Honda GL1500 Goldwing and a Ducati 900 Monster.
The bike seems tough, able to climb and run well through tight =
trails. My original idea was to trade it for a KLR650 after a summer of =
trail riding for familiarization but at the moment I'm glad its no =
heavier than it is, especially when I have to pick it up.
One thing I have noticed is that it seems pretty 'twitchy' at =
highway speeds above 50 or so, which I blame mostly on the Metzler front =
tire. Is there an acceptable compromise tire which will yield stable =
street handling and still work OK off road?
Thanks for any input and looking forward to sharing info with you =
all. =20

Joe

Joe:
The IRC GP 110 tire is a pretty good all-around tire. It is better than
the stock tire both off-road and on. It really shines on the street, but does
OK off-road. Actually, it does pretty well off-road, as long as it stays dry.
As soon as things get slick, it's pretty scary off-road.
Another tire I have run on my DR is the Kenda Trackmaster II. They work
very well off-road, and do OK on the street; except that:
1. They take a LONG time to break in. Until then, they are very slippery on
the road.
2. Even after they are broken in, they are scary on a wet road.
3. On a dry road, properly broken in, they work well, but feel funny - it
doesn't inspire confidence.
Most likely, these two tires are at opposite ends of the bias spectrum, ie.
the GP110 would be 70/30 on/off road, and the Kenda 30/70 on/off. There are
other tires closer to the middle of the spectrum. I all depends on where you
are going to be riding it most of the time.
One nice thing about both of the above tires is they are cheap, less than
$100 per set.

I noticed in a Suzuki accessories book they listed a replacement gel seat for
the DR350 series. Has anyone ought there bought of these ? I am curious if
they remember the cost and also the effect on seat height. I understand that
these lower the seat height, which would not upset me . I'm certain that
these seats are probably pretty comfortable but if anyone has an opinion it
is greatly appreciated.

The rain has come, the season is open and its time to get busy. Here is a
riding conditions check for those in Nor Cal couch potatoes who are thinking
of getting out this next weekend.....
Went to Holister this past Saturday - what a blast. The GP track was so
souppy that I took one pass at a tire spinning, mud slinging 7 mph then
pulled it off - only after sliding out twice. Thick mud is tough stuff to
ride in - but a hell of a blast!
The trails are wet but in great shape and should be prime in the West Ranch
after drying out a bit this week. Conditions are muddy with puddles but
plenty of bite to pick up speed and get your blood pumping. Make sure you
have good offroad tires (with no more than 12 lbs. psi) because your not
going to get off of the picnic pad without them. Oh yah, don't forget to
bring about $20 extra to the power cleaner afterwards because your going to
need it.
This is kids play at its finest - toys, mud and an all day hall pass. Have
a good time..
Guy
PS - If anyone has some feedback on other areas including Carnagie, Metcalf
and the badlands of Sacramento and Redding, please give a heads up. Free
weekends are too precious to waist on a long drive and bad conditions.

The stock seat is a triangular wedge compared to the plush gel seat. Seat
height is reduced maybe 1/2 inch, or so. I never measured. The gel seat is
wider. Cost is $159.95, and IMHO well worth the price. I've done several
100+ mile trail rides W/O discomfort.

Joe,
Have run some Chen Ching's with very good results (C-852's I believe?) =
They are a DOT dual sport tire. They have been everywhere from the =
loamy soil of Minn. to the rocky conditions around the Moab area and do =
an excellent job on the pavement.
Another excellent tire, especiallly for your conditions is the Dunlop =
752 ST's. They are not DOT, but work really well no matter where you =
ride, with the excepttion of wet pavement. You would want to take it =
easy in those conditions.

Thanks for any input and looking forward to sharing info with =
you all. =20

Jesse,
I'll be up at Elk mountain (cc camp) on Saturday November 27 riding
with a bunch of other guys. If I can, I'll try to swing on over to
where you're at. We'll both be riding in the same mountain range, I'll
be on the west side and you'll be on the east side. Either that or you
can ride with us if you'd like.
Guy,
If you'd like, you're more than welcome to join us. The place that
we'll be riding is in the Mendocino National forest just north-east of
Ukiah. Let me know and I can give you the particulars.

Hi again Guy, I will arrive at fouts springs Friday the 26th and will
be hooking up with a bunch there, I will be probably playing tourguide
as usual but would sure enjoy meeting up with you.
On a different note if I remember correctly both metcalf and Carniege
have more than their share of that glue mud that builds up between the
swingarm and rear tire when it is really wet. I have never seen a time
when it was too wet or too dry to have good traction at fouts springs
though. The only down side is summer time its pretty hot there.

Subject: (dr350) Rebore and new piston... is it really needed another 600 mile break-in ?
Date: 23 Nov 1999 01:44:01 -0000
Hi guys,
I have recently "upgraded" my DR350S with a Wiseco 82 mm piston, rings and
cylinder rebore. I guess my engine is now a 377 cc. I have also replaced the
stock gaskets with Wiseco one's, new valve seats, new "crankshaft" chain &
tensor (never mind my english about these two items...) and the local tuner
also "polished the admission" (then again, never mind my english...).
The bike feels a lot stronger at low revs.
The local tuner told me to do a 600 mile break-in.
So far, I have done 300 miles @ the street. Riding the DR with full knobby
tires in tarmac is a pain...
Next weekend I will have a great ride and I would like to use full throttle
in some trails if needed. If I change the oil and filter, is 300 miles a too
short mileage to start using full throttle since the piston is new and the
cylinder was recently rebored ?
My opinion is, as most of the engine internals remains the same, probably a
300 mile break-in period would be sufficient. What do you guys think ?
Will it harm my engine reliability and future oil consuption if I start
using full throttle with just 300 miles ?
Thanks in advance 1

Forest Trails for All-Terrain Vehicles
We, the undersigned, are appealing to our government for help in keeping our
national lands open for those whose recreation involves riding off-road
vehicles. Our cause for concern involves the potential exclusion to our
sport, while allowing bicycles, hunters, and hikers to take advantage of the
beauty of our American Forests. We feel that we are being discriminated
against without just cause. Common sense tells us that there must be
allowances for all recreationists. The trails allocated now are relatively
well maintained in the National lands. As part of a growing group of power
sport riders , we would appreciate your support in maintaining our rights and
preserving our public domain for this recreational sport.

Date: 22 Nov 1999 09:50:56 -0600
Hi all, I wanted to stiffen up my forks a little bit on my 99 DR350X. I was
going to raise the level of the fork oil and the weight of the oil. Does
anyone know what weight of oil I should use and how much I should raise it
too?
Thanks, Chris

I would not go any higher than 5" from the top, to stiffen up the front
end you should go to stiffer springs I stock the Race Tech three spring
kit which gives you a choice of 40kg/mm,43kg/mm, and 46kg/mm and goes
for $85.00+ what it cost to ship it.

Jesse,
Do you mean 5" from the top with the forks uncollapsed?..(still on the
bike with the springs in... just the top caps off to pour the oil in)...
which reminds me .. to drain the oil out I do have to remove the forks to get
them upsidedown to dump it.. unlike a Honda I had with a drain hole???
thought of drilling my own so I could more easily play with fork oil
heighths... Anyway.. never been thrilled with DR damper rod fork action...
does the 99 DR have cartridge? is the oil heighth different?
Thanks Jesse...

I bought the kit from Jesse and I installed the 43kg/mm with 20mm
preload and I went with Race-Tech's recommended oil height. The bike
can now take all the jumps that I have the guts enough to try (35'
tabletop is the farthest) without bottoming. It's also still plush in
the rocks, much easier to ride than a YZ250 I compared it against. I am
5'11" and weigh 180 lbs. w/o gear.

Hi Guy, to check and fill the forks they must be collaped then the fill
measured amount done preferbly without the springs in them, my manual
only goes to 96 but the dirt model has the cartrige forks that I believe
are the same as the 98 and 99 drsemodels as well as the dirt models.and
the level calls for 5.7" of oil in them. you have to remove them to get
all the old oil out and tip them upside down and pump them until all the
oil is out. Hope this helps.

To adjust the oil height you can used a turkey baster or syringe and a
plastic hose. Measure the oil height on the hose and insert into fork.
Suck up the extra oil.

Jesse,
Like Chris I also want more out of my dr 350. I
just got a 96 DR 350, and it is in good shape. This
is my first thumper, and i love it, but the suspension
needs some tweeking. My last bike was a ktm 250 sx,
and I'm 6ft 1in and 220lbs so needless to say the
suspension is waaayyyy to soft. I'm dissapointed that
the front forks do not have any compression
adjustment, but older dr's did. Please help....
Thank you, Brandon

Hi brandon, you say you have a 96 DR350, is it a dirt only or a dual
purpose DRSE model? they have different adjustment capabilities?Check
under the front forks and see if there is a removable rubber cover with
a slotted screw under it this is your compression dampening adjustment.
Let me know what you find.

Hi Scott, One thing I have found is that here is very little grease in
the triple clamp bearings the way the bikes come, also there is a
possibility that the adjustment may be loose this would give you the
loose feeling you are experiencing.
While you are at this you should see that these bearings are well
greased. Until you get the stiffer springs your adjustments will not
accomplish much except to frustrate you it will be $85.00 well spent and
your ride will be more plush due to the fact that you are riding at the
top or the softer area of the springs but with less tendancy to bottom
out.

Thats it Guy, as far as adjustment goes, to empty it you have to take
them off and pour the surface oil out and pump out the oil below the
damper piston or cartridge whichever is the case. good luck And have a
happy thanksgiving.

Hi Guys
I am wrestling with a dilemma. I have a chance to buy a very clean 98 =
DR650SE which would require selling my 93 DR350S. The idea would be =
that I would have a bike that should be more at home doing a day tour =
of, say, 250 miles in approx. 70/30 street/dirt road mix. The problem =
is I really like the DR350 for what I imagine are its superior dirt =
qualities and lighter weight, since I have been riding fairly technical =
trails (and want to be able to keep doing this) this is something of an =
issue. I can't imagine the DR650 being much better than a passable dirt =
bike. If I keep the 350 I will want to do something with the suspension =
(probably springs and oil) and probably replace the seat but I hate to =
spend a lot upgrading a bike that is probably only worth $2k or so. I =
think at some point I could add a more pure dirt bike to the DR650, such =
as an XR400 or DR350 off roader when funds become available but for now =
I am kind of stuck with one bike.
Sorry to be long winded but I really would appreciate your advice =
and I'm sure all of you have much more experience with the DRs than I =
do.

I would agree that the 650 would be more "at home" for
longer rides on the rode.In my opinion the 650 is more
a street bike than dirt worthy. The overall geometry of
the bike doesnt give a dirt "stance" like the 350.It
is heavier than the already healthy weighted 350 and
that will not be easy to ride in tight spots.I have
ridden a friends 650 and the bike has gobs of
power. There is a lot that can be done to a 350 for 500
bucks.Suspension upgrades as well as minor motor
tricks(mostly intake related) will improve its already
good offroad qualities. The 350 will still not be
comfortable for extended trips although i'm sure some
would disagree.I would say the 350 is 80/20 and the
650 is 40/60 off/on.Honda makes big bikes that are far
more dirt worthy 600cc+.It's hard to get the best of
both worlds where one lacks the other shines so it's
what you can live with that makes up your mind.I
bought my 98 DR350SE for the fun in the woods and can
use it for short trips.

I wanted to take a minute to thank Jesse for helping
me solve a carb problem that there is NO WAY I could
have fixed on my own.My needle valve was stuck open
due to a small piece of rubber o-ring that broke off
the seat and got stuck inside the seat.I called him on
a Sunday and discribed my problem and I'll be damned
he knew exactly what the problem was. Thanks again he
was a huge help

Joe,
If you're riding technical trails I think the DR650 would make that
challenge even more demanding. At 350lbs wet, 50lbs more than your current
steed, I think you'd find that bike quite a handful if you dropped it more
than once or twice during an offroad excursion. The 650 would certainly be
more than competent on fireroads and trails a 4x4 could deal with, I just
don't think that the added weight of that bike would make life enjoyable
off road. Once relegated to road duty the bike would be a riot, especially
if the engine had a bit of life breathed into it.
The problem with the 350 is that it can't handle any long road trips, or
maybe I just can't handle riding that bike for any distance at 60+ mph on
the road. It reminds me to much of my old Mazda pickup truck I had, no
passing power.
Putting a few bucks into your current ride isn't all that nonsensical. If
the bike does what you need it to do, improving its capabilities makes good
sense. When it stops making sense is when your demands move to far away
from what the bike was originally built for. It is a jack of all trades
and master of none scenario which it fills quite well.
I don't know what your financial situation is but if I were faced with the
same dilemma I think I would buy a used DR650, keep the DR350, and if the
650 fits the bill, get rid of the 350. If the 650 didn't meet my
expectations I would be able to sell it for at or near what I paid. This
would allow me to broaden my perspective in a relatively inexpensive and
financially safe manner.
Good Luck,
Eric

I ride both bikes but only own the 350. I have a Corbin seat for when I
want to do mostly road and simple trails. I do 150 to 300 mile days on it
and feel OK at the end. I could only handle about 150 miles before I got the
Corbin seat. Intake modifications (open up top of air box a bit) help it
some on the street. I cannot handle the 650 on tight trails although I am
sure some could. Also the 650 with standard seat is not a comfy as the 350
with the Corbin.

Joe,
I've got a '99 DR350 and it feels like a rock on the road. My other ride
is a '98 VTR1000 Honda Superhawk. I know what you mean by having another
bike, I've got four between the wife, son and myself.
I think your stability problem might be due to the tire(s) you have. I'm
not familiar with them, but they might be the cause.
I'm going to drop a tooth on the countershaft as well. I don't think it
will adversly affect the road performance of the bike and would help lend a
hand to front wheel antics. In fact the last time I had the bike out on
the road...couple days ago, I felt that shortening the gearing would help
it hang up there around 70mph or so with better ease.
The cycle gear box is available from Jesse ...i'm sure he'll email you of
this fact once he reads these posts. I understand that the box allows the
motor to breath much better for a nice 4-5hp increase. On the DR that
would be huge, and I think very noticeable.
With regard to comfort, I couldn't agree more, and I understand that a Gel
seat might help or even a Corbin, for long rides...I don't know how they
affect leg position when manuveuring in the dirt.
At times I've thought of going to a 440 kit to boost street performance but
don't think I'll take that route.
For me, the debate is to ditch the VTR and DR350 buying a KDX220 and a
DR650 as replacements. The 650 with some massaging could be a nice long
legged touring bike with the ability to take an excursion into areas I
would be reluctant to take the sportbike into given the opportunity. I
think the hooliganism factor of a lightly massaged 650 would be
overwhelmingly delicious.
My decision will wait until my son is older since he's currently dictating
my offroad riding level right now.

are a better seat, luggage rack, heavier springs and oil, possibly the

really well). Also I am going to drop the countershaft sprocket one tooth
for more pull off road, what does this do to the street performance in your

Will it work on 95-97 models of the DR 350?
Where are the parts available?

I have a '94 DR350SE that runs fine except when I am just cruising down the
road. At about 40 to 50mph with the throttle barely open the bike "surges"
slightly, like it is running low on gas or something. I have opened the
airbox, installed a Supertrapp Quiet slip-on with 6 disks and raised the
needle one shim and raised the main jet one size. I havn't touched the pilot
jet or screw. As I am riding along at a steady speed the bike feels vague,
like it wants to speed up or slow down but when I crack the throttle open it
pulls strong and clean. Any ideas?

Don,
I guess this is carb day so here goes. With all those modifications I'm not sure what main
you should use, but would guess around a 135-140 depending how modified your air box is. Most
every one with modified engines are installing a JX needle and a JX spring from Thumper
Racing. The stock pilot should be a 37.5, and should be fine, but am sure you need to adjust
the fuel screw while its running, so a TEE handle is also required, also from Thumper Racing.
The surging is most likely caused from fuel starvation, so believe your headed in the right
direction. Good luck Norm

John,
The TEE handle is a must on a DR350SE to adjust the idle fuel mixture
because the top of the
starter is very close to the bottom of the carb where the adjuster is
located. On the dirt
only model it is possible to adjust it with a very short screwdriver and
gloves, but it's not
real pretty and you adjust it after the engine is warmed up, so one
normally comes away with
some pretty warm paws. To adjust it on your SE model you first need to
drill out the tamper
proof plug thats hiding it. It is located on the bottom rear of the
carb venture in front of
the slide. The same TEE handle fits all DR350 models 1990 thru 1999. In
most cases, the fuel
screw will not require adjustment if you ride below 3000ft, and NO
Modifications have been
done to the engine, or airbox, including the removal of the rubber
snorkel in the top of the
airbox. T-handles are available at Thumper Racing for approx $16.00ea.

Is there a reasonably quiet aftermarket muffler for the DRS350 that still

saying as I was climbing this wet red dirt hill mixed with football size
rocks
with several twisties thrown in just to make it interesting referring
to that rear tire you let me have it worked very well. We road hard for
2 and a half days and the traction and trails couldn't have been better
we put on about 110 miles at Fouts Springs ca. My rear brake rotor is
like yours looks like polished chrome but very smooth still and has a
good feel to it, of course my original one was so bad I forgot what a
new one feels like. I found out that Jimmy Button is running this same
plating on aluminum rotors. Will get back to you later

Hi Chris, I would recommend 7wt cartrige fork oil and no higher than 5
and 1/2 inches from the top of the forks with the springs out and forks
fully compressed. While you have the springs out put some stiffer ones
back in this will save you the hassel of doing it over I have been
through this with my own I weigh 188lbs and run 44kg/mm in mine and I
love them.
