Gary at Thumper didn't have that info yet, he just said it was going to be good (I think that
also means expensive)..and that the K & N filter for the stock airbox will not fit. So, for me
it may be a matter of wait for awhile...I've no experience with Thumper but in most cases when
someone says 2 months...it could a very very long 2 months...As you know the stock filter is a
pain in the butt to get at...I would suspect that the new airbox will improve on that...

I'll call about that tank to see if I can get the measurements.
Good job on the new list.

Absolutely...might as well order a Thumper 435 kit. Seriously, how about finding out what
Cycle Gear has for dealers...Thumper used to carry the "magic airbox" and they told me
yesterday that Cycle Gear now longer makes it...
The question on the tank is whether to go with the Clark or the Acerbis...

Can't think of a reason in the world to keep that ugly tail. Don't know if this is
the reason, but European regs require all street bikes to have a rear fender that
reaches to a certain height above the road. More bureaucratic nonsense (IMHO). As

Kurt,
I had Acerbis on my first DR350S. I found that the tank only let me access
about the same amount of gas as the IMS that I have on my present DR350SE.
The crossover hose didn't seem to improve the condition. Also the Acerbis
made it extremely hard to access the spark plug because the tank protruded
down around the plug.
My IMS gives me about a 200 mile range on the street which is well balanced
with my riding. I do like the looks and shape of the Acerbis but in every
other way I prefer the IMS. Cost is approx. the same. The good looking decal
would not stay on my Acerbis tank so don't figure it in your choice.
Good luck,
Doug

I have the Clarke tank on my 1994 DR350. Nice quality, comparable to either
the IMS or Acerbis. Only problem was that I had to use an aftermarket petcock
(Yamaha part # $AA24500 00) to get around the vacumn feature on the the stock
petcock. I also had to cut down the tube on the petclck that goes up into the
tank to be able to use all of the gasoline..

PS you have to remove the smog plumbing to get the Clarke to fit.

Mainly because the Acerbis is narrow enough to shift your weight forward.
Also he has not had the missing gallon problem. I just mounted my Acerbis
tank today. 2 hour job, but pretty straight forward. Acerbis supplies you
with the cheesiest fuel line I have ever seen. I'm going to get some better
line tomorrow. I immediately took a heat gun to the decals on the Acerbis
tank. Will monitor my first tank to see how It does. Also, they give you
non-vaccum petcocks, so you need to plug your vaccuum line from the carb. I
used a plug from the drip irrigation system at our house. worked fine.

I think the quality of the plastic in the Clarke is on par with the other
brands. I didn't like the shape of the ones I have had on my XR and XRL.
They held more fuel but were hugh in the mid section. Although it was nice
to have something for your knees to grip when going steeply down hill, it
did remind me of riding a hippo. Clarke has made some new tanks lately that
look every bit as good as any other tank out there. The price ain't bad
either. I'll talk with Clarke tomorrow and let you know what they tell me.
I personally like the IMS tanks. I have them on both my bikes now. They
are slim and come in several colors.
Does anyone know anything about a pulled "ham string"? I think I have
injured myself (again) Lifting my behemoth out of the sand today has got

Today on the way home from church, we were passed by a Buell S1 weaving
through traffic. What was strange was that th rider was using hand signals
for his lane changes (which were numerous). My astute wife asked why he was
using hand signals on such a new bike. Good question. He had to stop to make a
turn into a gas station and he had his winker on, so his signal(s) seemed to
be fine. What would possess someone to take their hand off the bars while
scooting through traffic to signal when all they had to do was move their
thumb and be much safer? Am I missing something here? Am I becoming and old
fart and out of touch with what is cool? (that can't possibly be it).

That' s probably what you did. They get better with rest and Advil. Ice is a
good thing to put on it. Go to the store and buy a large bag of frozen peas,
they conform to shape better and when they thaw, you toss them back in the
freezer. A lot cheaper than an expensive medical ice pack and work just as
good. Ice it at night and once during the day.

How about rivetting it directly to the fender? My plate came off in Baja
and I noticed that this was the mounting of choice there.

Fred, There is a saying called " RICE " that is used for sprains, ligament
tears, etc.
It means Rest - Ice - Compress - Elevate. I think the rest and ice will be
your best bet. No need to elevate. I know how you feel. Last year I got my
XR650L onto an off camber and instead of letting the bike drop to the side, I
stuck my leg waaay out to support the bike. I ended up with a groin pull that
plagued me for more than a year. Had my bike been lighter or shorter ( or had
I been younger or taller? ) I think I would have been alright!
Good luck,
Doug
