Subject: RE: (dr) Buying Tires
Thanks for all the advice.
I bought tires from MAW (Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse). Their selection
was unparalled and their prices really good. I ordered a set of the Cheng
Shin C858 to try out and they ran me $36 and $28 for front and rear. They
are DOT approved too!
I also ordered another MT 21 for the rear ($52). This is going to be my
"special ocassions" tire. I have one now and it's great, but ride it on the
street and watch the rubber wear as you ride!
Their web site is aweful and tough to navigate around, but their customer
service is excellent. You can access them through Arrowheadmotorsports.com,
go to Favorite Links, and then to Motorcycles A to Z, (I think). Their
number is 1-800-241-2222.
If you are looking to buy anything I would recommend checking prices with
them first. I don't know if everything is inexpensive or not.
I wish you guys would have told me about this sooner. I have been spending
$80-$90 a tire for the last two years!
Thanks again,
Garth

Bob sounds to me like you need to do the
"t-vent"mod.On the right side of the carb is a vent
hose that should go straight up into the frame under
the seat.Gas can not get out of this tube.Put a t in
the hose where it comes of the carb and run one line
back up to it's origanil location and the other down
to a spot where gas can run off. This will eliminate
your bogging problem over the bumps. This is a symptom
that all SE models have you are far from alone. John

Does anyone know how much fork oil the '98 DR650SE takes? I am not just
going to pour in the amount, I am going to do the measure from the top
trick, But I just need to know if I have enough fork oil on hand or if I
need to go get more. I don't want to take it apart without having all
the stuff to put it back. My springs (front and rear) came today from
White Bros. and I can't wait to put them in... Thanks..

Hi Bob, This is a typical problem with the CV carb that work fine =
on relatively smooth surfaces but give problems when hitting moguls and =
such the reason for this is that the slide is only held open by vacuum =
and when you hit a jump or mogul gravity takes over and the slide =
momentarily will slam down closing off the throttle. the float mechanism =
also gets knocked around and lets too much fuel into the bowl and causes =
a rich condition for a few minutes. This is further enhanced by the =
wrong pilot jet in your case it should be an OEM Mikuni 37.5 pilot. As =
for your second question I stock a complete DR350 dirtmodel carb kit =
that will fit right into your bike for $330.00 this includes an aluminum =
spacer to clear the starter, the dirt model rubber manifold , and a =
single cable throttle assembly and cable as well as the new carb Jetted =
to your bike as equipped. You can view it on my website the address is =
below my name. If you feel real brave you could also get my Vortex =
airbox that would complete your intake package for another $279.00. =
anyway I will be most happy to help you with the tuning of your present =
condition whatever your decision just let me know.

Yes, that hose is on the right side of the carb near the BACK of the
carb, kinda hard to see. There is a hose coming out of the right SIDE of the
carb, which goes up to the fuel petcock. Only a dummy would cut THAT line
and put a drain tee in it. Which, of course, is precisely what I did a
couple weeks ago.

Hi Jan, just make sure you have two qts. that should be enough, 5 & 1/2 to 6
inches from the top with the forks collapsed and springs out should work OK.

Subject: Re: (dr) Buying Tires
Just wanted to tell people about my experience with MAW. In March I ordered a
pair of boots, fender pack, elbow protectors, and knee protectors. The only
thing they had in stock was the fender pack. Everything else was put on
backorder for thirty days, after which time if the items are not received the
order is cancelled. This is their policy, if you want it to stay on backorder
longer than 30 days you must notify them. Well I didn't get anything else from
them during the 30 days, so I ordered the same items from Dennis Kirk. They also
had to backorder the boots but sent me the other items. Dennis Kirk got me my
boots about a month later and I was happy. In mid-may I got a package from MAW,
with you guessed it the boots.
I called MAW and explained what happened and asked how to return the boots.
The woman then informed me that returning them was no problem but I would be
charged a restocking fee and shipping costs.Of course I didn't agree to this,
and after arguing with her and her talking to "someone" several times she
finally said she wouldn't charge me and would credit my card for the full
amount. The credit wasn't on my last statement, so I'm still not sure if this is
resolved. Needless to say I will NEVER order anything from MAW again. You can
decide for yourself.
