Subject: (dr) 2000DR650SE Suspension
I've got my DR650 running just about the way I want it. I'm running the K&N
with the airbox cover off, the Dynojet stage 2 jetting setup with a 170 main,
Supertrapp slip-on with 12 discs, a 14 tooth countershaft and a 43 tooth rear
ultralight, Renthal CR high bend bars, Pirelli off-road tires, and a few
other mods to lighten it. I ordered and still have in my garage the 5 gallon
IMS tank but am looking for something more around the stock size but lighter.
I then started on the suspension as it bottomed front and back on most
anything I hit at speed in the woods. I got some fine help from Mongo(Mike)
and the front fork springs he recommended from Race Tech which were their
3750 series in the .46kg/mm weight have changed everything since I got the
preload dialed in. The problem I've ran into is on the rear shocks. I
ordered some Eibachs from White Bros. and decided to have my dealer change
them because you need a spring compressor. Unfortunately they're too small
in the inside diameter. I had the dealer measure the stock id and he said
they were 59.25 and that they were 10 inches long which comes out to about
250mm if he measured right. I need a weight for my type riding of about 8 to
9 kg/mm. Does anybody have any suggestios?
I just haven't been able to get a response yet from Eibach or White and Race
Tech had told me earlier that they didn't have rear springs for the DR650
although they do have the Gold valves. I'm hoping to find something before I
have to have the dealer button it back up and end up paying shop rate for
naught. I'm hoping Kurt or Jesse or one of the other great listers has some
ideas as I'm going in for bilateral knee replacements in July and September
and need all the suspension I can get until then. No, I didn't tell my
orthopedic guy about dirt riding. They get silly sometimes.

Jerry, call Mike Walburn at DUAL STAR and ask for Part Nos. 20-98211 $79.95.
The springs are from Progressive researched by Mike and rate lower than
you're saying at 6.2 - 6.9 kg. I just returned from Moab along with Scott
Bower and we both were running that spring and I never came close to
bottoming out. I also was running the Gold Valve in the rear with anodized
lowers on the front and the shock body in the rear.

Jerry,
We have been working on your DR650 rear spring delema for a couple
months now and
are having an adapter made to allow for the use of the Eibach 883 series
spring.
(Same spring that fits the DR350) This series of spring is available in
3 heavier
rates than stock on the DR650. ( 7.2KG, 7.6KG, and 8.1KG.) (Sorry Jerry
8.1KG is the most we can get.) The only series of Eibach spring that we
found that would work on the DR650,(96 up)is the Eibach 892 series and
the heaviest one available is 7.1KG/mm. (And it's to large at the top,
but is usable.) I am not aware of any Eibach springs that require a
spring compressor to install, as the 883 series spring is about 30mm
longer than stock and there is still room to put a 1/2 inch thick
adapter along with it. The stock spring is susposed to be 6.5KG, and IS
60mm ID on one end and 55mm ID on the
other. We have found that a 7.6KG is about right for a 240 lb rider with
30 lbs
on the rear carrier. Also Race Tech has .47KG front springs available as

got me a set. The rear spring adapters will be in the $25 dollar range
and should
be done hopefully the end of next week. The adapters and or springs can
be
ordered from either myself or Jesse at Kientech Engineering. If you
know other
DR650 riders or are members of other lists please pass this on, as I
doubt I'll
ever get caught up on the replys on this subject. Meanwhile, we now
have 2
lengths of the Kouba Links for the DRZ400/E/S. One is mainly for
lowering the
rear and the other is for better suspension performance. Please have a
look at
our web-site below and give them a try, your inseam and or backside just
might
like them. No info on the DR650 adapters is on our site yet. Norm

Dr. DR,
How soon can you get a set of the adapters made and shipped. I've already
got the 883 Eibach and my dealer thinks I'm crazy.
Although I want to get out this week, I can probably get my dealer to shove
the scoot against the wall for a few days if we can work it out. I wanted,
and got, the 8.1kg/mm as I think it'll work best for my riding style.

Well after having ridden the Chattahootchie Dualsport last weekend in
Suches Georgia (at TWO campground) I must give an updated report and ride
impression. Up to this point I had only been riding it around the
countryside breaking it in.
Right off I have to say this may be the best dirt bike I have ever
owned---and I have owned them all. I actually bought it to ride backroads as
I didn't see it as my real knobby tired dirt bike. Well I put on some DOT
knobbies (MT21) and rode the dualsport thinking it would be a little
cumbersome out there---well was I wrong. It performed flawlessly with more
power than I really need. My buddy had a new one also and we both came away
with the same impression. The Chattahootchie wasn't a very technical ride
but there was some good single track and the DRZ handled it very well. And
the magic button was oh so nice!!!! I can't go back now!!!! This motor is
super smooth at all engine speeds, and is very hard to stall---unlike a
WR400 which is very easy to stall.
Mine was really bone stock----I will not--I repeat not---- change the
exhaust, as it has plenty of power, doesn't offend anybody---and the
aftermarket people don't want you to know the muffler weighs almost the same
as theirs and flows very well!!!!
I did some small things to lower weight---1. took off the bar weights
2. took off the radiator fan----you don't need it----it's for some idiot
that will sit and idle at a train for 30 minutes when it is 95░. 3. Cut
rear fender off as short as possible (I may substitute to something totally
different and smaller later). 4. Took off right mirror (actually crashed and
broke it off :). 5. removed reflectors.
The seat just looks really thin and uncomfortable-----and this ride
covered over 300 miles over 2 days. My butt was a little sore---but less
than any other bike I had ever owned. I just knew it was going to kill me.
But---I think riding offroad for 300 miles--you butt is going to be a little
sore on any seat or bike. So no disappointment here. Although my wife said
it hurt her butt just looking at it!!!!!
I had about 700 miles on it and decided to see how fast it would go on a
straight stretch of pavement. I kind of chickened out at an indicated 92mph.
This was with about 15lbs. of air in the DOT tires. It probably could have
went 95 if I would of stayed with it. It runs 65-70 easily with no buzzing
or vibration.
And the gearing---well the old DR350S would need lower gearing for
offroad use---but I don't think this bike is going to need it. I was happy
with that!!!!
Gas mileage----I am floored here. It got 49 mpg the whole weekend. So I
don't need a bigger tank. Heck my XR250 and TTR250 have a hard time doing
that. I don't know how they got the DRZ to get that good especially when it
carburates perfectly, and doesn't even need an extensive warmup before
taking the choke off. I think it went on reserve at about 90 miles. So maybe
it will go about 150 miles before running out. I have covered the metal tank
with some clear stuff my dealer got for me.
Problems: One itsty bitsy---a bolt on the lower right side of the motor
came loose and it started leaking oil. It just needed snugging up. That's
it!!!!!! The three bolts that fell out of the headlight housing had to be
my fault---as I had just had them out, and I bet I didn't tighten them!!!!
Suspension was perfect--not from the start. The front was a little harsh
and the back a little soft---but some quick adjustments solved that quickly.
Clutch action is as easy and smooth as it gets. It was as good as my
250's.
Shifting was nice--not like a 125, but nice.
Throttle is easy too----I removed the push cable on the throttle as I do
on all my offroad bikes.
No need to go out and spend great amounts of money if you already have a
nice DR350---but the new one is better all around---unless your
short---cause this sucker is taller. I find this good for serious offroad
work--and not a problem for me (I'm 5'11")
Did I mention this blue sucker is pretty----it really is!!!!
