HI Wesley, you have three circuits in the carb the Idle, (pilot), midrange
(needle) and main Jet. You can be rich in one and lean in another. To find
out which is which you can put a piece of tape on the stationary portion of
the throttle and then put another piece on the movable portion of the
throttle at 1/4 open another at half and another at 3/4 open position. Then
find some seldom used road and put about 10 miles on it at 1/4 throttle then
check the plug color. Do the same thing at the other positions to see where
you are running black and where you are running white. What is your jetting
sizes now?

from jesse's last replay, told me that the plug would be black if rich and
white if to lean, on my plug, the electrode and core is white, but the outer
(metal bit) is black. am I to lean or to rich.

Hi Bob, check the shaft that the kick start idle gear is on for =

I guess that's the chance you take with used bikes.

I did the carb to tank vent tube "tee" modification to prevent bogging =
in the rough stuff, and found that I then had popping on decceleration, =
and the bike just didn't seem to have quite as much midrange. I capped =
off the tee and, sure enough, popping went away and the bike had it's =

Gary...
By reading your message below message and then the other one where you
describe the popping going away after you capped off your tee, I'm sure you
tee'd the wrong line. Below, in your first message, you say "tube that goes
from the right side of the carb back to the gas tank petcock."
The line that goes to the petcock from the right side of the carb is a
vacuum line that operates the petcock, only allowing fuel to flow while the
engine is running. After looking at both of my DR's, I can see a line that
exits the right side of the carb, near the top, and goes up, it's only about
4 inches long and is a vent line. Apparently this is the line to vent, with
a tee and another hose going down I presume...
Sounds like you need to move to tee to the vent line and remove it from the
vacuum line, eh?
:)

<<<Regarding the T-vent mod...what problem does this solve?>>>
It's pretty common with DR's that the engine will bog for a second when
you hit some really choppy whoops. It's caused, I'm told on this list, by
gas going up into the vent line (tube that goes from the right side of the
carb back to the gas tank petcock) and getting trapped there for a second.
The mod, which several people on this list have done, is to cut that line in
the middle and put in a plastic tee with a drain hose. If your DR doesn't do
it, great! Of course, maybe you're just not riding fast enough ;-)
Enjoy that DR!
