Ron,
I know exactly what you are thinking. I was in the north GA
mountians a few weeks ago (for the BMW rally) on mine. Anyone who has
ridden in this area can testify that these are some of, if not the best
twistie roads in the country. And there are lots of them! The big DR is
great fun there. Try the road between Helen and Hiawasee! Me and my
buddy on his KTM Adventure R had a blast down there. I know in the tight
stuff, I can ride the DR faster than my old ('97) YZF600R. We did some
off roading there too. Great trails in the mountians. The worst part was
the 500+ mile ride to get there (and back) from central Indiana. My butt
hurt bad...and I have the Travelcade Gel seat. Have fun!

What a blast! Took the new DR650SE to the north Georgia mountains this
past
weekend and was totally surprised by it's street prowess. I feel that
it
will scoot through a curve faster than my VTR. I know it's easier to
scoot
it through a series of tight curves than the VTR. I didn't do much off
roading. Not in shape for that yet, but this thing is a grin-inducing
machine on Wolf Pen Gap Road. :-)

Yeah, Ron, I know what you mean. I was playing with some buddies on the
weekend, 2 of whom were on big Triumphs - one a Thunderbird and the other a
Sprint. The pair blasted ahead of the group in some twisties south of
Olympia, WA. When they pulled over a few miles later to allow the rest of
us to catch up, they were slackjawed to see me draw alongside before they
got their feet down :))
Just wait until Jesse gets that Vortex out for the 650 ...

Subject: (dr) Air box mod
Please may I ask a few of questions regarding the air box mod:
Does the needle need raising or is the main jet increase sufficient?
Is removing the back-fire screen essential for power gains?
What about the metal bit the filter fixes onto - that has a fairly small
hole as well?
For the screen, what's the best way to get it out as it appears to be
riveted on? - hacked out from the carb side?
My standard DR350SE '98 occasionally suffers from mild pre-ignition under
hard acceleration, especially when very hot. Is this likely to be mixture
related, or just normal from a hot air-cooled engine?
As always, thanks for any advice.

Due to my income tax refund, I am possibly in the market for a jacket.
The main question is, is a TourMaster Cortech 3/4 gonna be as good a
jacket as a FirstGear Kili? And what about Aerostich? The price spans
from $200 to $500 and I don't exactly know why. Anyone ever owned a
Cortech? Since it's the least expensive that's the way I'm leaning
(the refund wasn't huge...)
Thanks
Jon

Jon,
I own the FirstGear Kenya which is the shorter version of the kilamjaro. I
absolutely love it. It has alot of ventilation zippers and two huge storage
pockets on the front. It comes with a zipout liner which makes it even
cooler in the summer months. It is a very warm jacket for the winter with
the liner in and all the velcro options tightened down. It runs about $250
and is well worth it. The armor padding zips in or out for more comfort.
Hope this helps.

Subject: RE: (dr) Air box mod
Hi Stephen, first thing you should do is remove the rubber manifold and that
will give you access to the screen. Once the manifold is out then you can
drop the shock reservoir down over the swingarm, remove the mudguard now you
can take out the airbox. remove the filter element. now draw a square on the
top beginning from the right side about a half inch behind the mounting bolt
holes across to the edge of the foam rubber trim then straight back to the
foam rubber edge, then back across and forward. You should end up with a 3
and a half to four inch square now take a jig saw and cut this area out.
clean out all the debris and set it a side and remove the carb. Install a
140 genuine Mikuni main jet and close up the bottom and then remove the top
and pull out the little plastic step washer then the needle if your needle
has multigrooves on it place the clip in the fourth groove down if not you
have two choices order a jx needle from Thumper Racing that has the five
grooves on it or add an extra washer below the clip in between the small
plastic washer that is there. This will raise the needle and give you a
richer midrange fuel mixture to balance out with the extra air that you will
be getting from the airbox mod.
To reassemble the works It is easier to install the carb then the airbox and
then the rubber manifold fasten the manifold/carb joint first then the
airbox joint check from both sides to see that the rubber boot is properly
engaged with the airbox and carb. reinstall the shock reservoir and the
mudguard and you should be ready to go. Leave the metal filter mounting
piece in place it is needed to hold the filter element in place. If you have
more questions get back to me.

Jesse Kientz

Subject: (dr) Handlebar vibrations.
Ben, in response to your question, I have not really noticed a difference in
handlebar vibration between the DRZ400S and the DR350SE. Both bikes are high
enough off the ground that their not as well mannered as a street bike. The
DRZ that I purchased has the small weights at the end of the handlebars to
address handlebar vibration issues. Please keep in mind that we are still
dealing with 1 cylinder, and that alone is going to create some vibration. I
was never overly affected by handlebar vibration on my DR350, but I never
really took it for extended road rides, (over 25 miles). I have not had the
DRZ long enough to notice any serious vibration issues. As I did mention, if
you want to convert the DRZ400E (dirt version) to street legal, the E model
is more temperamental on the road then the S model, (which is made for
street)... Some time back people were curious about a blue DRZ, (which mine
is). The fact is you can get either bike, (street or dirt) in blue or
yellow. Seems from what I've seen, most street DRZ's are blue, and most dirt
DRZ's are yellow. I don't know if this helps, but I'm going to have to ride
the DRZ for a while before I can really pass judgment on its streetability.
By the way the Suzuki salesman said that the new DRZ is a dirtable
streetbike, and the original DR's are streetable dirtbikes. He was probably
referring to liquid cooling, and high use of magnesium alloys, but who
knows. - Don.

Subject: Re: (dr) Jackets
Have you looked at the Teknic brand? They have some nice jackets and the
price (I believe) is reasonable. I have the mach one jacket and it's
excellent. Great ventilation, nice recognizing colors, armor in the right
spots (including the back), and a decent liner. It does not have the pocket
system that the kiliminjaro has though. I had the kiliminjaro for about a
week, it's a good jacket but I returned it. Small problems kept arising;
snaps would fall off, zippers and velcro were not properly attached. All
things considered it was pretty crappy craftmanship. However, my jacket may
be the exception because everybody I know who has one speaks highly of
them!!!
Teknic has web site but I forget the address. My jacket can be seen on my
web page in the pictures section under "Riding Buddies".
My 2 cents (Canadian currency though)

Shayne.
