Jesse is correct, those are for dampening of engine vibes. Now, I have
removed mine (because I have Acerbis hand guards and they had to go to
fit them) and vibration is not really a problem. I can still see a clear
picture in the mirrors at 60mph. 2 weekends ago I rode 1300 miles and
numb or tingling hands were not an issue. Which is more than I can say
for my ass. OUCH! You want to try buzzy, try a KTM 640...Forget the
mirrors, I can't see out of my eyeballs on one of those. Compared to
other 650cc singles, the DR is very smooth. I have ridden others (KLR,
KTM, F650 etc). and only the BMW is close. Of course most are putting
out more hp stock too.

All--
I just bought a '99 DR650 and am curious about the weights on the ends
of
the handlebars. What is their purpose, and what's the effect of taking
them
off?
Thanks, Andrew

He bought the parts used from a guy that had them on an XR600, for
$800. He said that was about 1/2 of new price.
I hope to bum a ride on it this weekend.

Jesse,
The Suzuki manual says at "high speed" is when the charcoal cannister is
purged.. into the carb...??? but it is the pipe at the bottom of the CV
carb.. is there vacuum there I'm not sure.. so plug it? Also this 90 DRS
seem to have just 1 bowl vent hose...

Subject: (dr) 93 DR350S not reving above 7000 rpm
I've got a 93' DR350S fitted with JK's airbox, a 34mm flatslide carb and big
bore CRD free flow exhuast, but the bike has decided not to rev over 7000
rpm. I changed a few weeks earlier the main jet for a larger one and the
bike was working great then it happened all of a sudden and I can't find out
what has gone wrong. It just cuts out, drops down a few revs and runs again
below 7000. The bike does not stall it just won't go above 7000 rpm.
Thinking back it might have happened after - one day the kick start seemed
to lock up on me (I thought I'd broken my leg as I tried to jick it over and
was hoping around for a good 5 minutes) but the bike did start after that
and runs well up to 7000 rpm although the compression seems down and now
I've got an oil leak from the kick start seal. (Any advice on how easy this
is to change please)
I've changed the main jet for a few different ones with no effect. I took it
to the local garage and they checked out the carb and also changed the jet a
few times and still no effect. The garage thinks its electrical. Does anyone
have any ideas what it could be and what I can do to fix it.
I've also got to change the clutch, anyone know a good place in the UK that
can give me a good price? Would be interested from guys in Europe how much a
replacement clutch cost where you live.
Thanks, Andrew

I removed the rubber tube from the airbox and enlarged the opening.
The opening is now aprox. 4 square inch (instead of 2 with the rubber tube).
I use a #145 main jet (stock: 140).
Did I get a big power boost ? No, maybe a slight increase and the intake sound
gets a bit louder.

Hi Al (and everyone else),
Do you happen to know if the KTM-style "fenderette" is available
as a universal fender extension? I was looking at UFO taillights
in a (possibly old) White Brothers catalog today. I did see the
KTM-style unit but it was available only as a package with the OEM
KTM plastic upper fender attached. The universal fender extension
had the somewhat bulkier taillight. Definitely not as cool looking
as the KTM-style taillight.
Has anyone on the list actually installed a Maier MX fender/UFO
extension taillight combo on a DR350? If yes, can you offer any
advice to the rest of us?
Thanx,

Yes, this is correct. Speaking of factory rubber on the S models...ditch
the factory rubber unless all you plan on doing is street riding.
One drawback I see is the difficulty in changing the spark plug. Looks like
the tank needs to be removed. Any DRZ owners out there have comments
regarding this??

Yep, I went to the local dealer and drooled on the vlus S model again today.
The salesman let me read the owners manual...I was curious about the digital
instrumentation's capabilities....WOW!! what a cool piece of gadgetry.
Every bike ridden in dual sport events needs one of these, so us dimwits
that miss a turn can dial the odometer back to get us back on the course
mileages.

Yeah!!! I got one Doug and it is awesome!!! The digital instrument
includes 3 odometers------2 of them are ressetable. And you can make one of
them count down (backwards) if you want, instead of forward!!!
Power---wow!!! No aftermarket stuff needed here!!!! The exhaust is
almost as light as any aftermarket.
I've trimmed a little weight off of mine here and there----even took off
the electric cooling fan. The offroad model doesn't even have one, so I
figured they put in on there in case some dimwit would leave the engine
running while for 25 minutes while waiting for a train. So far-----no
problem!!!!!

Subject: RE: (dr) 93 DR350S not reving above 7000 rpm
Andrew, This brings back an unpleasant memory when your kick starter locked
up it may be because the counter shaft has broken and is tearing up your
engine inside I would pull the clutch cover and check it. This is one weak
spot on the DR especially if the kick start compression release ritual is
not followed the kick start Idler gear is on the right end of the
countershaft and it locks up when the shaft breaks. It breaks just inside
the right bearing and lets the shaft move back and forth inside causing much
shrapnel inside not to mention resistance. I don't want to be the bearer of
bad news but would encourage you to look inside ASAP. Would like to know
what you find.
