On my 250, there seems to be so little difference in volume.. it is
slight but not too great.. that I would not worry with disks vs. volume.
I went down to 2 at one point and it tried to get quieter, but you are
supposed to run at least 4. Tune for power and if you are unhappy, I
think the only option is a different muffler. That is where I am and I'm
not going to be a noise nuisance on the trails I ride. I think that is
the first step I can take to help keep our few trails open. I'm just
waiting for some money to come in before dealing with this. The life of
the self-employed!!

Mike,
I have a Supertrapp EAr on my DR 650 SE. I have no personel experience
with the number of disks
(running with 4 or 5 disk, like I got it), but as far as I have heard
there is no big difference in power, but in loudness !
What I believe is that at low rpm (where I prefer to have power) the
exhaust does not restrict the engine very much,
so you probably will feel the difference only when reving high.
Thats about the feeling that I had when replacing the stock muffler with
the Supetrapp.
To remove the core you have to open the (3 ?) special screws around the
side of the muffler, towards the end where the disks are. The tool
needed is called 'torx' (at least in Germany).
In your earlier mail you write about the bad connection between the pipe
and the muffler. I had the same problem with my DR650, and I found out
that I had to buy the OEM gasket from Suzuki. Now it fits good.
Hope this helps.

Here's the FMF Header Pipe part numbers for a 99DR350 (this came straight
from fmf, see below). Which would be better, High-Flo or PowerBomb??
Jessie, your thoughts/recommendations? thanks, Patrick

The 2 headers we offer are the High Flo which will give your bike a
little more low-end to mid-range power, and the Powerbomb which will
give your bike a little more overall power gain, and will quiet down the
bike some. Both headers are stainless steel, and ceramic coated which
keeps the heat in better, and are shaped for maximum flow. The part # on
the High-Flo is an S-401H $149.99, and the Powerbomb is an S-421H
$189.99. Thanks...

Hi Ric, the stock headpipe will fit the mega max ok but the oversize
headpipe will not so I have to enlarge the area where the headpipe slips
into the megamax. I just cut it off, bore it out to fit the headpipe and
weld it back on. If your headpipe will not slip in it is not the stock head
pipe. The oversize headpipes are 1&1/2 inches in diameter vs 1&3/8 inches
for the stock one.

Jesse,
I have the same problem with the stock header pipe being too large. Did you
say that someone sells an FMF header pipe that will fit the FMF exhaust?

Scott and the rest of you, I think I got the last one they had. I jumped on
it when I heard you bought one from them, and at that time they said they
had either one or two left.
In my case the head pipe is larger than stock so it will need work to fit,
Jesse does this at his shop too. The Collar comes off and gets enlarged on a
lathe or something, and welded back on again. Then he seals it with the
red RTV stuff, because you lose the O-ring seal in the process.
I can't wait to ride it. The bike is so awesome already it should be quite
nice with the new pipe on.
Plus, it'll be the only part on the bike that's still shiny, at least for a
day or two =)

Hi guys, thanks for your input. I get the impression that I better go get
the used one before I miss out! One last question though - I've seen
reference to Megamax and Megamax II - are there two different versions?
This particular used Megamax that I'm considering has a rivetted FMF name
plate on the side of the can, which is not something I've seen on Megamaxes
pictured on the internet or in catalogs. Is it an older one?
Oh yeah, it comes with the quiet core, but is missing the o-ring at the
headpipe end. This must be some kind of special heat resistant o-ring - is
that right? Should I just use some high-heat silicone?
Thanks again!
Chris

ohh boy this is the exact can of worms I just opened
the beginning of the week.I have spoken and e-mailed
with this exact question to FMF along with a freind of
mine on Tuesday.Three different techs and three
different answers.I'm going with the powerbomb it is
paid for and i'm waiting for it to be released.I was
told the chamber(bomb) in the pipe lets the exhuast
cool off and contract inside it and this creates a
draw(vacume)of sorts on the motor and improves flow.It
has to do with enhancing exhuast "scavenging" a term
that can be looked up i'm sure for a better
explaination than I can give.It was due to be released
today for the DR350 I e-mailed them for an update we
will see.I originally thought this pipe was designed
only for noise reduction(not a bad thing) but I was
wrong.I was assured the powerbomb will out perform the
hi-flo.I'll keep ya'll posted I plan on slapping on
the pumper carb(bored to 35mm) and the pipe in one
shot after this there is no more that can be done
without opening up the motor(this winter he-he-he)
Which would be better,

This may have no concern for most of you.I found this
link with some real technical info on exhuast
scavenging.Open the page and scroll down to the
scavenging section it is very technical but explains
that bigger is not always better with a header
pipe.Click this link
http://users2.50megs.com/xlr8/ls1/theory.htm these
are the principles i'm sure FMF uses in designing
exhuast.I would imagine a great deal of time and money
are spent with research and developement of their products.
