Howdie gang,
My recently acquired '97 DR350SE has a front brake that feels mushy. I have
bled it, but there was no difference. I think I've read somewhere that it's
the brake line and that they are all like this - is that true? Can anyone
recommend a good source for a bolt-on aftermarket hydraulic line? Thanks in
advance.

Hi Chris,
Funny you should mention this because I've always felt that my '91
DR350S had marginal brakes at best. I've always changed my brake
pads every other year or so and have also replaced the brake fluid at
about the same interval. None of this made a significant improvement
in the braking action. Then a few weeks ago I bought a '96 DR350
that had been very well cared for. It's the dirt version, but it
has essentially the same brake components and stuff as my '91 DRS.
The very first time riding it I could tell in an instant that the
brakes were light years better than those my DRS. The difference?
The previous owner installed a Fastline front brake line and also
drained the entire front and rear system to replace the fluid with
Dot 5 silicone fluid. I would have never thought that an upgraded
brakeline and different fluid would make such a big change but
apparently it does. The guy I bought the '96 from has a large
collection of motorcycles and commented "Yeah, whenever I get a
new bike -- especially a go-fast street bike -- the first thing I
do is swap out the brake lines to get the thing to stop reliably."
Wish I'd known that years ago - I would not have had to live so long
with the marginal brakes on my '91!

Subject: (dr) New UFO Dual Sport Lighting
While at the Powersports Industry Show in Indianapolis this past
February, I discovered two neat new dual sport lighting units from UFO.
They are a headlight assemblies and taillight/fenderette assemblies
featuring integral turn signals.
Although I doubt that these units are D.O.T. approved, many of you may
find them suitable to your needs.
The headlight assembly really cleans up the front end of a bike. And, the
small, integral turn signals should be extremely durable, safely tucked
out of harms way. When used in conjuntion with a small, round
speedometer assembly (Baja Designs) to replace my stock DR350SE headlight
and instrument assemblies, shaved nine pounds off of the front of the
bike. There are a few glitches with the headlight assembly though: it
is not a halogen unit, though bright (replacement bulbs are cheap!); the
mounting straps are for inverted forks, so you will either have to modify
them with zip-ties, or use O.E.M. mounting straps for an off-road DR 350
or an RMX 250; the unit also sits a little low, so you will probably want
to fabricate some upper mounting brackets (possibly from the original
front turn signal brackets) in order to raise the assembly a couple of
inches.
Although I have not yet received one of the taillight assemblies, it
should be just what the doctor ordered in most cases. It looks similar
to the O.E.M. unit found on KTM RXCs, fitting under the rear fender, and
with a small, black "fenderette" just the right size for mounting a
license plate. Although the taillight assembly will not work very well
with stock DR 350 rear fenders, it should work wonderfully with the new
MX style rear fender from Maier plastics.

Exhaust looks great, as does both your bikes. Have you taken the 650 off
road much yet; if so, how does it handle? Looking at one of your pictures it
seems like your rear tire is taking some street abuse. Are there many public
places to ride in Indiana? I visit Chicago each year and the only off-road
spot we have found is near Oswego, about 90 minutes SW of Chicago.

Several years ago, Suzuki changed a few things on the DR SE suspension, the
forks I believe, using the same as the dirt model, allowing more
adjustability. I may not have gotten the details correct here, so correct
me if I'm wrong. What I need to know is what Suzuki did to upgrade the SE
suspension and what year these changes were made.
I am thinking of selling my '94 as it is getting a little tired and would

Doug,
The 98-99 models of the DR350 do have the same suspension as the dirt
models. I still changed the fork springs to Progressive Suspension
units, and put the Kouba Links and a heavier spring on the rear. Gotta
tune it for your riding weight and style, you know.
