Mauro and list,
As I understand it, the DR350 1998 and 1999 street models have the same
forks as the off road models. Probably had so many they wanted to get
rid of them before they brought out the DRZ400.

Subject: (dr) MC Show (dr400); KLR A&C
Was at the Vancouver International Motorcycle Show this evening,
conveniently located 5 minutes from my house in Abbotsford, and had a look
at the new DR400's. In Canada they only have the DS version and the
dirt-only electric start. While I've heard that the forks and rims are
substandard (compared to the dirt version) on the DS the rims looked
identical... right down to the stamped numbers. Maybe those numbers just
indicate size and not alloy... As for fork internals, it was impossible to
tell... all I can say is that the front end (forks) also looked identical on
both bikes. As the fork bodies appear to be identical, a person could
conceivably drop the same internal's in if they so desired... The dirt bike
had these little plastic wingy things attached to the lower front to protect
the water-pump... which would disappear after the first unfriendly rock
introduced itself. As far as rating the DR400 DS version... while a couple
things are different, it's a dirt bike with lights... pure and simple. But
for the 30lb weight difference between the two (262lbs and 291 lbs), I'd be
inclined to go for the dirt version and throw a 7lb Baja kit on it. MSRP
for both bikes is $6,949.
Also had a look at the new Canadian KLR-C... aside from body-work, it's
mechanically the same as the KLR-A except for that one thing we all wish we
had on ours... a larger front rotor combined with a dual-pot calliper. The
MSRP was also $500 more than the KLR-A. And while you'd not know it to look
at the two bikes side by each, the dry weight of the KLR-C is 370lbs...
33lbs more than the "A".
Travel and clearance are down by about 1 1/2"; seat height 1/2"; and fuel
capacity is half.
Cheers,
Arne
