I have a problem with Mac F4 on my main HD. Right after the the intro when it should transition to the game the game crashes.
I am looking for people with a similar problem. What you should see is a type 11 error when it crashes. I have a workaround for one thing. Run Falcon from an external HD. The other thing is I have written to tech support about this and they are looking into it. But I'd like to find others who experience this so they don't think I'm crazy :)

That's not a problem I have. I have 96MB RAM, 6MB VRAM and 3GB free space on the HD. One thing is I have MacsBug and have run off logs of the crashes. There is a reference to VM being the originating factor. So that would jive with what you're commenting on. My thought is to put the game back on the HD and have the VM set to use the ext HD. I also plan to get the ATI 128....whenever they get around to releasing it

I have a 333MHz G3 (beige) with a good 128mb of RAM and I've been having some probs with Falcon 4 regarding a training mission. When I start up mission 2, Takeoff, my comp crashes and tells me I got a Type 2 error and I should restart my computer. I've had that happen with a few other programs in the past, but this crash is consistent. The other missions work just fine, but I can't figure out whats wrong. I can't seem to stay in the mission for more than 3 seconds before it crashes. Any ideas?

Type2 is an address error. Sometimes this can be fixed with Norton Utilities running disk doctor then speed disk and rebuilding the desktop on restart. The latest update for Norton is 4.04

It appears that they're finally coming. The high-performance graphics cards based around ATI's RAGE 128 chip set are on their way to resellers, with the gaming-targeted version of the card, the RAGE Orion, coming over the course of the next two weeks.
ATI's Brian Hentschel tells MacCentral that the gaming card, announced with two other flavors late last year, will be dripping into on-line and physical store shelves over the duration of the next 14 days. ATI had previously slated a March delivery date for the cards, which was then pushed back to May.
The new RAGE Orion card is similar to the card included with Apple's blue and white G3 systems which were announced at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco this past January. It includes 16 megs of graphics memory, half that of the higher-end Mac RAGE 128 cards due soon.
Differing from 3Dfx's VooDoo 2 chip set, the ATI RAGE Orion card provides 32-bit color 3D (16.7 million colors) without impact to performance and frame rates. Despite its having a broader color spectrum, the new RAGE card provides significantly better performance in games that take advantage of the graphics subsystem.
ATI's new game card offers full support and compliance for powerful and demanding QD3D RAVE and OpenGL applications. These include the recently released Quake 3 preview released first on the Mac from id Software.
The card will have a price of under $200 when it arrives at nationwide retailers. Watch for a full review of the RAGE Orion from MacCentral in a few weeks.

Westlake Interactive's Phil Sulak made a brief statement on Usenet yesterday explaining the work that's being done to improve Falcon 4.0 on the Mac and when you can expect another update.
Sorry I haven't checked in recently; Mark Krenek and I have been hard at work on the next patch (1.06c) and haven't had much of a chance to come up for air. We're hoping to release it sometime next week; it should address the majority of the remaining software problems (most are issues related to DrawSprocket and InputSprocket). Basically, if you have a "I can't get this thing to run" problem, we should have a fix for you next week (and yes, even for that persnickety "DriverServicesLib" problem).
Network and game related problems (such as wingmen acting funny) are being addressed by the good folks at MicroProse, and we'll be incorporating those fixes/changes in a few more weeks (for that we'll need the final set of 1.07 code from MP). I'm not sure how long it'll take us to integrate the 1.07 code once we receive it. After talking to some of the programmers there, I have the distinct impression that there's a LOT of changes in 1.07 (hopefully for the better ;-)

>a site that helps fix the IPRemote prob for cable modem users, >but I don't want to bother with it. It's much more fun playing >F4. Here's the site, for future reference.
I recently wrote to CH Products about the despair we are all having over the un-programmability of our F-16 Fighter Sticks, and Pro Throttles with Falcon 4. I got this response from CH:
"Falcon 4 is an InputSprocket game and supports assignment of actions to the buttons and hats on the controllers within the game.
However, if the game supports mouse and keyboard input (I do not have a copy of the game yet), removing the InputSprocket CH file from the Extensions folder within the System Folder, should allow the CH Control Panels to function with a Falcon 4.0 settings."
Mac Tech CH Products
But before you start cheering, all is still not quite right. I followed the instructions and removed the InputSprocket CH file from the Extensions folder, restarted the mac, programmed some hat switches and fired up Falcon. The hat switches did indeed work . Worked wonderfully in fact. Buuuuuutttttttt, (you new that was "but" was coming) with out the InputSprocket, there was no direct control for the Pitch, Roll, Rudders and Throttle.
I thought "no problem", I've seen the key commands for those functions in the list, I'll just program those functions in the control panels. So I did just that. And it worked, somewhat. Now when I use the Joystick to roll the jet, it keeps on rolling unless I roll back the other direction. And when I try to stop the roll be rolling in the opposite direction, the jet just keeps rolling in the opposite direction. In other words the stick doesn't "self center". I thought I might find a key command for centering the stick and could program it to center on the "release" button. But I couldn't find a key command for centering. The throttle isn't working quite right either, but that's probably because I just don't understand how to program the slide correctly.
I know there has got to be a way to get over this last hurdle and make the CH control panels work so we can have all of the functionality we are used to having in Hornet Korea. I'm just too dumb to figure it out. Can anybody help out here?

ATI Video Software Update 1.0 fixes a "freeze when using CPUs with high processor speeds (>=400MHz) and high screen resolution (1280X1024) after heavily using offscreen graphics memory; a crash when millions of colors are used with a high resolution monitor; and an instance with certain third party applications where scrolling could result in a crash.
Pricing and ship dates for ATI RAGE 128 cards revealed
by Ben Wilson, bwilson@maccentral.com
June 16, 1999, 9:30 am ET
PCI-based Mac users envious of their blue and white G3-using friends and colleagues have been waiting quite a while for ATI's RAGE 128-based graphics cards. After months of delays and misinformation, MacCentral has finally received confirmation on pricing and shipping dates for the series of accelerators.
The RAGE ORION accelerator, which is targeted toward Macintosh gamers and includes 16 MB SDRAM (the same amount as the RAGE chipset contained in the blue and white G3 Macs) will be priced at $169 after a $30 rebate. ATI says you'll be able to buy this card flavor on June 25.
Meanwhile, the NEXUS 128, which includes 32 MB SDRAM and is capable of driving true color resolutions of up to 1920x1200. The card is targeted at professional graphics designer and will carry a price of $269 (after $30 rebate). It's expected to ship in early July.
Finally, the last card to ship in the ATI RAGE 128 line will be the Xclaim VR 128, which like its RAGE PRO counterpart features several multimedia capabilities, including the ability to capture still images or video from users' VCR or camcorder, or laser disc, then export the content to any of those devices. The Xclaim VR also acts as an external TV tuner that lets users view up to 125 channels full screen or in a window on their Mac.

From the 06/17/99 post of AccelerateYourMac, they will be soon doing a head-to-head match up of the IXMicro Game Rocket/Rage128/Voodoo2 Game Wizard. They have already done a Rage128 OEM/Voodoo2 comparison and that can be found at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
Also on the accelerator front, there is another card coming for the Mac, the ProFormance III from Formac. Based on the comparisons that Formac did, it is superior to the ATI128 series.
Formac is a German company that just opened a US office. Their cards will come in a 16MB & 32MB version. I've seen projected dates and prices but that info was based on the cards being 8 & 16MB. So I have e-mailed the company for more info

Rage Orion impressions I've been using the Rage Orion 128 for the past few days. I am not offering any benchmarks here. But I can say that it has not caused any problems. It made no difference (that I could easily detect anyway) in routine tasks. However, when playing games (such as the Quake 3 demo), textures were smoother, colors were "crisper" and overall game play was smoother and faster - as compared to the XClaim VR card (with Rage Pro) that I had been using. [Note: The card comes with a new 4.0 version of the ATI Universal Installer. It is not yet available on the ATI web site.]

There had been some 3rd source info that there was to be a Mac 1.06c patch this week. So far it has not materialized. I have been checking the two main sites for the Mac F4 patches all week in hopes of getting it.
The sites are:

You have to use a text editor to open the file. I use BBEdit. TM is suppose to have a way to turn off inputsprockets. But I have a CH stick and haven't found that yet. I have reconfigured the file for the button selections tho and it works. I have managed to get my CH stick to work somewhat with straight control panel, but all it gives you is button control, but no aircraft control

The following is taken from an AMUG page about getting ADSL service from USWest. While most of you are fortunate enough not to have USWest for your phone company, I suspect that the same principles apply to other phone companies offering ADSL. The following is offered for those of you, like me, that have been unable to get ADSL and want to eliminate all the excuses :)
What can I do if my phone line does not qualify for DSL?
There are many reasons why a phone line might not yet be able to qualify for DSL services.
The most common reason is because it is too hot outside. DSL lines are sensitive to extreme temperatures for a number of reasons. Currently, the systems used to test phone lines for DSL compatibility are not able to tell how hot it is outside, so they use a hard-wired method that assumes it's 75 degrees outside and adds 50 degrees to it. That means that if it were 75 degrees outside, the system would test a line as if it were 135 degrees and would give an accurate measurement of how it would perform on a Phoenix summer day with some room to spare. There is only one problem, if it is 117 degrees outside instead of 75 degrees, then the system tests as if it were 167 degrees (which is not possible) and does not pass the line.
The second most common reason phone lines do not qualify for DSL services is because too many telephones are plugged in, or a modem is connected that is drawing too much from the phone line. When this happens, the testing equipment can misread a phone line and not pass it for DSL.
The best way to get a phone line tested for DSL is to follow these simple steps:
First, unplug all extra telephones, fax machines, modems, etc from the line and leave only one telephone connected before you call in for testing.
Second, call as early in the day as possible. The testing office (1-888-MEGA-USW option 2) opens at 7:00 in the morning. If you call before the heat of the day starts, you will get a much more accurate test of your phone line, and your line will stand a much better chance of passing the test.
Third, if you have more than one phone line, have them both tested. Many times one line will pass and the second line will not. Order DSL on the line that gets the best test results.
Finally, if none of these methods work, US West is still building the system and there is technology that will be implemented around the end of August that will extend the reach of DSL. Call back then and get your line re-tested.

It is Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line....it is the use of the current phone line for concurrent analog and digital signals. That means you use the line for both voice and computer transmissions at the same time. For the digital part, it requires the use of an ADSL modem and allows a minimum of 256k speeds.

Westlake Interactive recently made a couple of statements regarding updates to games that they have developed. First, Phil Sulak made the following statement to Usenet yesterday regarding an upcoming update to Falcon 4.0:
"The 1.06c update for Falcon is coming along, but we've hit a few snags. We're putting the final touches on it today and tomorrow, so hopefully it'll hit the web sites in the next few days. Sorry that it's taken us so long, but we had to overhaul our DrawSprocket code, and by doing so opened up a small can of worms."
