G'day all, just a note to introduce myself: My name's Lee, I'm an
aspiring comic-book creator from Down Under (Perth, Western Australia)
to be exact, I've a short history of mini-comics and one-panel gag
cartoons, and am looking to learn and improve to the point of being able
to do something I can consider real comic Art. I also hope I can be of
some use and contribute something worthwhile to this list.
Cheers,
Lee

Subject: (cbiz) Small Press Expo profits benefit CBLDF
Date: 25 Sep 1997 16:03:11 -0500 (CDT)
PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Small Press Expo profits benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund
More donations as royalties from Small Press Expo benefit comic roll in
The annual Small Press Expo (SPX), the East coast's premiere event for
independent, alternative, and self-published comic books, donated
thousands of dollars from its profits to support the Comic Book Legal
Defense Fund (CBLDF), a non-profit organization protecting the First
Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals. Not including
profits generated from the admission gate and from profits generated
from the Small Press Expo benefit comic, the CBLDF raised over $4,750 at
the show from a benefit auction and from donations made at the CBLDF
exhibit at the SPX in Silver Spring, MD on the weekend of September
19-21.
Dave Sim, creator of the fan favorite comic book series Cerebus, drew
sketches for fans in exchange for donations made at the CBLDF exhibit at
the Small Press Expo. "I think that it's great that people continue to
support the CBLDF," said Sim, "and the fact that twice as much money was
raised here in 1997 than was raised at SPX in 1996 is a very good omen
for next year. Let's see if we can double it year after year."
The CBLDF will also receive profits from the massive 128 page anthology
comic book that features new work by over 40 of the artists that
attended this year's Small Press Expo. With initial sales of well over
5,000, the royalties from subsequent sales of this book will help fill
the CBLDF coffers for some time to come. Additionally, Diamond Comic
Distributors, North America's largest distributor of comic books, will
be donating all of their profits to the CBLDF that they earn from
distributing the benefit book.
Jeff Mason, editor of indy, an industry magazine about alternative comic
books, sees the Small Press Expo benefit book as an easy sell, "First of
all this anthology is a great deal, 128 pages for only $2.95 with dozens
of great cartoonists; Second, it's all for a good cause. Who wouldnÆt
want to buy it?"

Small Press Expo '97 - Ignatz Award Winners
Ignatz The 1997 Small Press Expo (SPX) inaugurated a new award for
outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning. The Ignatz, named
after George Herriman's brick-wielding mouse, recognizes outstanding
work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both
as an artform and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz is a
festival prize, the first such of the United States comic book
industry. Winners were determined by ballot at the Small Press Expo, a
weekend convention and tradeshow showcasing creator-owned comics.
The Ignatz Awards voting was open to all attendees of the Small Press
Expo in Silver Spring, MD, just outside of Washington, DC, and Awards
were presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony on Saturday,
September 20.
All attendees of SPX had an opportunity to cast their vote in seven
categories:
Outstanding Artist
Outstanding Story
Outstanding Series
Outstanding Comic
Outstanding Minicomic
Outstanding Graphic Novel/Collection
Breakout Talent
The ballot consisted of five nominees for each category. A jury of
five artists worked independently to arrive at the Ignatz ballot. Jury
members were precluded from nominating themselves and none knew who
the others were. Each jury member provided three nominations, and a
second round of voting established the final ballot.
1997 Jury Members were: Jessica Abel (Artbabe), Chester Brown
(Underwater), Ed Brubaker (Detour), Mark Wheatley (Radical Dreamer),
and Joe Zabel (Tresspassers).

Subject: (cbiz) PRESS RELEASE: Marketing comic books as culture cultivates new readers
Date: 28 Sep 1997 12:37:49 -0500 (CDT)
PRESS RELEASE
For immediate release
Marketing comic books as culture cultivates new readers
Ed Brubaker's Detour is bringing in new comic book readers
Gainesville, FL, September 28, 1997: The October debut of Harvey,
Ignatz, and Eisner Award nominated cartoonist Ed Brubaker's new series,
Detour, is a landmark for this acclaimed creator for more than one
reason. Creatively, Detour is remarkable as Brubaker explores exciting
new directions, but of even more interest is the unique promotion and
marketing of this new comic book series to non-traditional comic book
readers. Although Detour publisher Alternative Press, Inc., is counting
on the purchases of comic shop regulars to make the new series a hit,
fans of music and film are being recruited to make Detour a cultural
phenomenon.
"We've made it a point to reach out to those people that I would
classify as 'non-traditional' comic book readers to get them involved in
comics," said publisher Jeff Mason, "to perhaps make Detour the first
comic book, of hopefully many, that these folks have ever read."
Features in mainstream media such as the October 1997 issue of the pop
culture Spin magazine are now coupled with the comic book industry's
recent endeavors to increase the fan base of comics. "Luckily, when we
have over half of a million Spin readers reading about Ed Brubaker, we
no longer have to hope and pray that those folks might stumble across a
comic book store looking for his comic," explained Jeff Mason, "Diamond
Comic Distribution, America's largest comic book distributor, along with
a number of the industry's leading publishers have instituted something
called the Comic Shop Locator Service so that fans can dial toll free
888-COMIC-BOOK to find the nearest comic book store. Now those
potential readers that may only see a comic book on their friends'
coffee tables will actually be able to find comics in a comic book
store."
Featured in this first issue of Detour is "Life on the Fault Line" about
a man who struggles with his hated roommates and the dystopian world
around him as he tries vainly to cling to his moral standards. This
hilarious black comedy seamlessly blends the real and the unreal to
concoct a frightening vision of the not too distant future. Brubaker
also delivers "Get Out of My Head", a poignant piece about a high school
girl whose obsession with a cherished zine and its creator has gone a
little bit too far.
Ed Brubaker's work on his popular series Lowlife as well as his projects
for DC's Vertigo and Dark Horse have garnered him Harvey and Eisner
Award nominations and a lot of critical acclaim over the years. Now
Brubaker breaks through to a new level as both the art and writing in
this new series are a big leap forward from his previous work as he
progresses from the autobiographical to a lot more exploratory fiction.
"Detour" is an ongoing comic book series debuting October from
Alternative Press, Inc., at a retail price of $2.95.
