  61. (Note to the scribes list:  a question was posted about the Symposium to the
  62. Artemisian list, and I thought y'all might be interested in the answer as
  63. well.)

  65. I will be teaching three classes at the Known World Arts & Sciences Symposium,
  66. and here is the information:
  67.  
  68. 1.  Intro to the small harp.  Brief overview of the history of the harp and
  69. types of harp used.  What is a small harp.  How to acquire one, what to look
  70. for.  What to do with it once you have it (tuning, replacing strings, how to
  71. learn to play it.)  Ownership of a harp or any musical knowledge is not
  72. necessary.  If you already own a harp please bring it if you can.  I bring two
  73. of mine (one nylon strings, one wire) for students to look at.  I have
  74. catalogs and brochures for students to examine and some to take home (these
  75. may be slightly out of date, but the addresses are still good).
  76.  
  77. PLEASE NOTE:  The following two are basically "how-to-draw-it" classes:
  78.  
  79. 2.  Versal letters and 14th Century Fleuronnee Illumination.  How to draw
  80. versal letters.  Fleuronnee is a style of penwork ornament that can be drawn
  81. freehand once the vocabulary is mastered.  It consists mostly of plant and
  82. leaf shapes which are simple to draw but look like they aren't.  This is good
  83. for scrolls that you don't have much time to do but will look as if you did.
  84. Please note:  Calligraphy and gilding will NOT be demonstrated.  All you need
  85. for this class is note taking materials, paper (graph paper is helpful) and
  86. colored pens, pencils or markers.  Please don't bring dip pens.  
  87.  
  88. 3.  Design Elements of Irish Illumination, 8th - 11th Centuries.
  89. I will cover the Insular  Majuscule hand but not teach it.  Straight line
  90. letters, knotted letters, strapwork interlace, zoomorphic interlace, spirals
  91. and key patterns will be demonstrated.  Again, you need note taking materials,
  92. graph paper, compass and ruler if you have them, colored pencils or markers.
  93. No dip pens.  An extensive calligraphy kit is not necessary.  
  94.  
  95. Students in the illumination classes will receive photocopied examples and an
  96. annotated bibliography.  Class fee of $2 or $3 (not sure yet) to cover cost of
  97. copying handouts.  Please note:  these classes are not restricted to
  98. illuminators.  If you want to embroider the designs or use them for other
  99. purposes, please feel welcome.

  117. I'm teaching the class on how to make Viking beads from polymer clay. Class
  118. is 4:30-6:00. My class limit is 4 people. There is an age limit, students
  119. need to be 16+. There is a $5.00 fee. For this you will get a starter kit
  120. with clay, needle, exacto type clicking blade, some pre done pattern canes
  121. and a small holding tub.

  124. The goal it to have students make two of there own patterns and to use their
  125. patterns to construct beads. Finished beads will be baked on sight. If time
  126. doesn't allow, the students can use the pre done pattern pieces to make a bead.

  147. I am teaching a class on Target Archery and Target Archery Marshaling at
  148. KWAS from 11-1pm.
  149.     There is no space limit on the class (shouldn't really be a
  150. problem) and there isn't really an age cut-off though Warranted Archery
  151. Marshals of Artemisia have to be at least 16 years of age.  No cost,
  152. either.  Just bring a pad of paper to take notes on if you like.
  153.     This class is geared toward those who want to know more about
  154. target archery and want to become Warranted Archery Marshals of
  155. Artemisia.
  156.     The end result of the course will be an understanding that will
  157. allow an individual to become an archery marshal.

  496. This is a worm program, NOT a virus. This program has reportedly been
  497. received through email spamming and USENET newsgroup posting. The file is
  498. usually named HAPPY99.EXE in the email or article attachment.
  499.  
  500. When being executed, the program also opens a window entitled "Happy New
  501. Year 1999 !!" showing a firework display to disguise its other actions. =
  502. The
  503. program copies itself as SKA.EXE and extracts a DLL that it carries as
  504. SKA.DLL into WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. It also modifies WSOCK32.DLL in
  505. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and copies the original WSOCK32.DLL into
  506. WSOCK32.SKA.
  507.  
  508. WSOCK32.DLL handles internet-connectivity in Windows 95 and 98. The
  509. modification to WSOCK32.DLL allows the worm routine to be triggered when a
  510. connect or send activity is detected. When such online activity occurs, =
  511. the
  512. modified code loads the worm's SKA.DLL. This SKA.DLL creates a new email =
  513. or
  514. a new article with UUENCODED HAPPY99.EXE inserted into the email or =
  515. article.
  516. It then sends this email or posts this article.
  517.  
  518. If WSOCK32.DLL is in use when the worm tries to modify it (i.e. a user is
  519. online), the worm adds a registry entry:
  520.  
  521. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce=3DSKA.=
  522. EXE
  523.  
  524. The registry entry loads the worm the next time Windows start.
  525.  
  526. Removing the worm manually:
  527. delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.EXE
  528. delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.DLL

  1632. This is a post regarding something to think about for 'populace meeting.'
  1633. On the heralds list there has been a discussion of what people call their
  1634. various business meetings in the SCA. Some groups like to speak forsoothly
  1635. when setting these things up. As we have been making an attempt lately to
  1636. use more appropriate and period terms on things like 'autocrat/event
  1637. steward' and 'feastocrat/head cook,' I thought this might be something for
  1638. people to think about.
  1639.     Ideas that are being used around the known world are: 'moot,'
  1640. 'gamoot' (both welsh) 'curia,' 'forum,' 'rada' (cossak), 'meeting' (OED
  1641. says it is 14th cent.), or whatever else interests people. I'm not saying
  1642. we should, just that it is an interesting idea to kick around.
