  43.  
  44.      "Hey, Buffy."
  45.      Buffy glanced over her shoulder, offering a smile as Xander
  46. walked up behind her. "Hey," she replied, weaving her way through
  47. the crowd on her way to the library. "S'up?"
  48.      The other teen grinned at her and shook his head. "New topic:
  49. who was the creep from last night, and why wouldn't you talk about
  50. him when you got back?"
  51.      "He's not a creep," Buffy said, her tone a bit defensive.
  52. "He's an old friend."
  53.      "Sure," Xander said indulgently, before giving her a look that
  54. let her know just how little he believed what she was saying. "Now
  55. the truth. The guy walks in, kisses you like there's no tomorrow,
  56. so what's the deal?"
  57.      Turning to look at the other teen, Buffy sighed and stopped
  58. walking. Xander did the same, waiting expectantly. "He's a
  59. _friend_," Buffy said, stressing the word. She sighed. "It's
  60. complicated."
  61.      "So wait a sec." Xander held up a finger, then pointed at his
  62. chest. "If I'm your friend, am I allowed to kiss you like that?" He
  63. smiled slightly.
  64.      She grinned, picking up her walk again. "You wish," she
  65. replied as Xander scrambled to catch up, "but I'd knock you flat."
  66.      "So," he said, "that would make him _more_ than a friend,
  67. wouldn't it?"
  68.      "I guess," she replied. "He's more of the ex-boyfriend sort of
  69. old friend."
  70.      "Ah-_hah_." A pause. "How ex?"
  71.      "Very ex."
  72.      "Good."
  73.      Buffy grinned slightly, then shook her head. "You can
  74. interrogate him later, yourself," she said. "He's going to check in
  75. with me some time today..." She trailed off as they entered the
  76. library, and she saw the expression on Giles' face. Her Watcher
  77. wasn't one prone to excessive over-reactions, so when she saw the
  78. way he was poring over the Codex, and the troubled look in his
  79. eyes, she immediately put aside the light mood she'd had while
  80. speaking with Xander. For his part, the other teen fell silent.
  81.      "Something up, Giles?" she asked.
  82.      "Yes," Giles said quietly. Then he glanced up at her. "We have
  83. something of a problem."
  84.      "That's generally the case when something's up," Xander said. 
  85.      "I was called by the Network Coordinator, earlier this
  86. morning," Giles said. "And since then, I've spoken with Mr. Zebuto-
  87. - - Kendra's Watcher, if you recall-- and he recieved a similar
  88. message."
  89.      "Coordinator? What?" Buffy shook her head. "Start over,
  90. Giles," she said. "'Cause you're not making any sense right now."
  91.      Giles shook his head and moved back to the Codex. 
  92.      Buffy followed him with a sigh. "Giles," she said quietly,
  93. "what's going on?"
  94.      "The Coordinator," Giles said, straightening a bit, "is the
  95. one who...runs the Watcher Network."
  96.      "Your boss?" Xander piped up.
  97.      "Effectively speaking."
  98.      "Which is the only way we ever speak around here," Xander
  99. said. He forced his grin away when neither Giles nor Buffy returned
  100. it, and sighed. "So, the big Coordinator Guy called you up. Wow,
  101. cool, let's kiss his feet and move on. Next topic?" He shook his
  102. head at the expressions the words earned him. "Or not."
  103.      With a sigh, Giles looked back at Buffy. "At any rate," he
  104. said, "I was...given some rather disturbing news."
  105.      "Okay," Buffy said. "Not like we ever get anything else, but
  106. what was it?"
  107.      "The Network," Giles began. "...is an extremely...how to put
  108. this...farsighted organization. Thus the collections of prophecies
  109. and such, to allow Watchers and Slayers to make the best descisions
  110. possible when they need to determine what courses of action to
  111. take." He swallowed, and Buffy began to get the distinct feeling
  112. that something seriously off-the-wall was going on. "At any rate,"
  113. Giles said, "they have been made aware of the case with yourself
  114. and Kendra. And they have a rather unique perspective on the entire
  115. situation."
  116.      "And that would be?"
  117.      "That because your death created a new Slayer, if you die
  118. again, fate may decide to give a repeat performance."
  119.      Buffy frowned. "Excuse me?"
  120.      "In short," Giles said haltingly, "they feel that it might be
  121. best for the fate of humanity as well as for the crusade against
  122. the vampires and evil in general, if there were more than just two
  123. Slayers."
  124.      "Hold _on_, whoa, back up," Xander broke in. "Now, I realize
  125. I'm an idiot as far as these big world-saving things go, but are
  126. you saying what I think you're saying?"
  127.      "I'm saying that they are very possibly going to set things up
  128. so as to...permit a direct attack on Buffy's life."
  129.      The two teens stared at him in shocked silence. "_What_?!"
  130. Buffy finally screeched.
  131.      "They-- I was told--" Giles shook his head. "They will, uh,
  132. how to say this without giving you the wrong, the wrong
  133. impression..."
  134.      "Wrong _impression_?!" Buffy yelled. "What the hell kind of
  135. impression would be _right_?!" She shook her head. "I've been
  136. fighting their fight now for two _years_ and now they want to
  137. _kill_ me?!"
  138.      Giles took a breath and opened his mouth to speak. "Buffy--"
  139.      "Don't _Buffy_ me!" she yelled. "I give up two years and this
  140. is those assholes are gonna repay me?!" Her eyes narrowed. "Wait a
  141. sec," she said. "Why did you even tell me?" Then, derisively, "You
  142. didn't honestly think I'd just go _along_ with it, did you?"
  143.      "Whoa," Xander said. "Buff, that's kind of harsh, don't you--"
  144.      "Shut up, Xander," Buffy snapped, glaring at Giles. "Come on,"
  145. she directed her Watcher. "Did you think I was gonna just sit quiet
  146. and let somebody kill me because they _say_ they'll bring me back?"
  147.      "Of course not," Giles replied, shaking his head. "Buffy,
  148. please...calm down."
  149.      "I don't think so," she said.
  150.      "Buffy," Giles said, a little more force in his voice, "get a
  151. hold of yourself." The Slayer glared at him defiantly, and he took
  152. her by the shoulders to hold her still. "I am not," he said, "about
  153. to let anyone kill you, is that understood?"
  154.      She nodded, despite the anger and resentment that was showing
  155. through in her expression. 
  156.      "Good," Giles said. He glanced over at Xander. "Xander," he
  157. said, "would you please leave the two of us?"
  158.      Xander glanced from Buffy, then to the Watcher, then back.
  159. "You gonna be okay?" he asked her.
  160.      She glared at Giles, then nodded to Xander. "Yeah," she said.
  161. "_I'll_ be fine."
  162.      Giles sighed. "Mister Harris, if you please..." He nodded
  163. toward the doorway.
  164.      "On my way," Xander said, walking out of the room.
  165.      "First of all," Giles said, "there was a young man named Pike
  166. here to see you earlier. I don't want you to speak with him." 
  167.      Buffy raised an eyebrow. "Why the hell not?" she asked. "He's
  168. a friend, if they're going to try and kill me, I need all the
  169. friends I can get, don't I?"
  170.      "Except that he may not be a friend any longer," Giles said
  171. quietly. When he saw the stricken look that passed across her face,
  172. he sighed. "Buffy," he said, "you must understand, he knows so much
  173. about our procedure and--"
  174.      "He read Merrick's books," Buffy interrupted.
  175.      "There would have been none left to read within days," Giles
  176. said quietly. "The Network clears out the belongings of dead
  177. Watchers as soon as they recieve word of the death, to assure that
  178. the materials won't fall into the wrong hands." He sighed. "I am
  179. sorry, Buffy, but..."
  180.      "So you're saying Pike's going to try to kill me?" She shook
  181. her head. "That's insane. He knows I could beat the crap out of him
  182. in a fight, and he's just here to catch up on old times."
  183.      "Be that as it may," Giles said, "I don't want you speaking
  184. with him unless there are others around you. Myself, Xander, or
  185. Willow. Or Cordelia, I suppose." He tacked the last on, realizing
  186. a split second later that Cordelia would most likely do more harm
  187. than good if she were to try to defend the Slayer. 
  188.      "But isn't that overreacting?" Buffy asked. "Just because he
  189. shows up, doesn't mean he--" She took a deep breath, and Giles
  190. noticed that it was slightly uneven. 
  191.      He sighed. "Buffy," he said, "everything will be fine, so long
  192. as you're careful and follow my instructions. For once."
  193.      "Easy for you to say," she muttered. "They're not gonna try to
  194. kill _you_."
  195.      Giles shook his head. "Even if they did kill you," he said,
  196. "they would do all in their power to bring you back to life. You're
  197. a Slayer, Buffy, they're not--"
  198.      "Not _a_ Slayer," she broke in. "_The_ Slayer. I'm supposed to
  199. be _the_ Slayer." She swallowed hard, and it was only then that
  200. Giles realized she was close to tears. "You don't understand this
  201. at all, do you! This isn't something I ever wanted to do, but I've
  202. done it best I could for two _years_ now, partly 'cause I didn't
  203. have a choice, but also because it's something _I_ can do, nobody
  204. else! Merrick told me that I'm the Chosen One! You did too!" She
  205. shook her head, taking a quick breath, then continued. "Chosen
  206. _One_! One is not _plural_! Now, not only are they trying to kill
  207. me...but..." She sighed, falling into a brief silence. "This is
  208. something that makes me special, Giles. And now they're going to
  209. try to take that away." A tear spilled over onto her cheek, tracing
  210. a path down her smooth skin, blurring the mascara slightly. "It was
  211. one thing with Kendra. That was an accident and nobody knew it
  212. would happen and she stays outta my way anyway. This, though..."
  213. The Slayer took a quick breath, obviously trying to keep herself
  214. from letting more tears go. "This just isn't _fair_."
  215.      Giles sighed, shaking his head and drawing her into his arms,
  216. almost surprised that she let him hold her. "I know," he murmured,
  217. "and Buffy, you must believe me when I tell you, I would never let
  218. them hurt you. And I'm going to fight this, best I can. I promise
  219. you."
  220.      Not moving or trying to pull away from him, Buffy tensed
  221. slightly, her body shaking harder as she began to cry in earnest.
  222. Giles held her, shaking his head and rocking her slightly, and
  223. trying to decide what on earth he was going to be able to do about
  224. the mess that was quick developing around them all.

  249.     ôIt was the strangest thing,ö Buffy said to Willow on their way to the
  250. library.  ôI felt like some one was there, ya know, like watching me.  I
  251. thought it was a vamp or something evil, but I couldnÆt sense any type of
  252. demon.ö
  253.     ôMaybe a regular old human was passing by,ö Willow suggested hopefully.
  254.     ôWill, when has it ever been a æregular old humanÆ?ö Buffy asked her friend.
  255.     ôAll right, you have a point, but there have been no prophecies and itÆs been
  256. æslow slayingÆ I believe you called it...Anyway, IÆm sure it was nothing,ö
  257. Will said, trying to ease her friendÆs mind as well as her own.

  261.     Angel had made it to his apartment before sun rise, barely.  It looked the
  262. same as the last time he saw it.  But it felt so empty.  The first thing he
  263. did was put on the claddagh ring, the heart pointing towards him.  He guessed
  264. that he would have to talk to Buffy and know that she had forgiven him before
  265. he could even begin to forgive himself.  The only problem with that theory is
  266. that he wasnÆt sure he could face Buffy, or how she would react.  Did she feel
  267. guilty too?  æGodÆ he thought to himself.  æWhat if she blames herself for
  268. Angelus coming back.Æ  He knew he would have to see her soon.  Not only for
  269. her sake, but for his as well.

  273.     Giles frowned.  He had read the passage five times now, and each time it was
  274. the same.  This was bad.  He stood and turned as the library doors swung open.
  275.     Buffy and Willow stopped their conversation as soon as they saw the look on
  276. GilesÆ face.
  277.     ôSpill,ö Buffy said flatly.  She knew that look.  Something was up.
  278.     ôI-i have come upon a prophecy,ö Giles said.
  279.     ôOk, that helps,ö Buffy replied sarcastically.
  280.     Willow walked to the table where several books lay open.  A dusty, old book
  281. in the center of the pile caught her attention.  She picked it up and read to
  282. herself for a moment.
  283.     ôI think I recognize this, well something like it,ö Willow began catching
  284. both Giles and BuffyÆs attention.
  285.     ôRecognize what?ö Xander said as he walked in the door, Cordelia on his arm.

  288.     Sitting on the couch, Angel tried desperately to remember why Angelus had
  289. been so looking forward to today.  Something was coming and he needed to know
  290. what it was, so did Buffy.

  324. "Buffy"
  325.  
  326. Buffy lay on her bed, following the aftermath of her 
  327. final battle with Angel.  She had physically fought 
  328. with Angelus so many times in the recent past, but 
  329. this "fight" was the hardest.  The tears fell from 
  330. her eyes as she thought of all the times Angel was 
  331. there when she needed him.  She tried to think of all 
  332. of the times he wasn't. But she couldn't.  She was 
  333. unable to remember the horrible things that had happened 
  334. after she loved him so fully.  So completely.  After 
  335. she gave him her soul.  She gave up so much for him, 
  336. and when it happened, when he changed because of 
  337. her love, she did not even know.  
  338.  
  339. She knew, however, that her life was pretty much over.  
  340. Without Angel in it, she was as good as dead.  But, it 
  341. didn't matter. Nothing mattered.  And, nothing would 
  342. ever matter again.  There was no possible way for their 
  343. love to survive.  She's a human.  A Vampire-Slaying 
  344. Human, sure, but, still a human.  And, Angel.  Well, 
  345. he's a Vampire.  He is everything she hates.  But, she 
  346. doesn't hate him.  What she feels for him does not even 
  347. come close to hatred.  In fact, it is the exact opposite.  
  348.  
  349. æHe is the exact definition of what I want in my life.  
  350. I can't think of a reason to live without him.'
  351.  
  352. ~~~And I'd give up forever to touch you
  353. 'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
  354. You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
  355. And I don't want to go home right now.~~~
  356.  
  357. She continued to think of the times he was there, 
  358. offering comfort.  He would pull her into his strong 
  359. arms, and shield her against the world.  They fought 
  360. side by side, teaching and learning from one another 
  361. over the months.  She felt they had finally come to a 
  362. place where they trusted each other completely. Buffy 
  363. knew she would never feel the same for anyone else, ever.  
  364. He was her first and only true love.  Nothing anyone 
  365. could say would ever change that.
  366.  
  367. Through all of the hard times of the past few months, 
  368. Buffy held onto the hope that her Angel would be returned 
  369. to her.  She could block out all of the things that he 
  370. had done.  She could erase all of the pain he had caused 
  371. her.  In the time before he changed back to her Angel, it 
  372. was all she could think of to get her through.  Especially 
  373. when he was at his worst.  When he was watching her.  
  374. When he was taunting her.  When he killed Jenny.  When 
  375. he tried over and over to kill her.  To kill Giles.  
  376. To kill Willow and Xander.
  377.  
  378. ~~~And all I can taste is this moment
  379. And all I can breathe is your life
  380. And sooner or later it's over
  381. I just don't want to miss you tonight~~~
  382.  
  383. Buffy thought she would just hide away in her room 
  384. forever.  She'd ever again see the light of day or 
  385. the darkness of night.  She had ust spent the worst 
  386. night of her life telling Angel to leave her alone. To 
  387. never, ever bother her again.  To never love her again.  
  388. And,he agreed.  But, she didn't want that.  She wanted 
  389. him in her life.  She wanted to be able to run to him.  
  390. To hide away in his apartment, held in the safety of 
  391. his arms.
  392.  
  393. <NO!  That's impossible!  There is no way we can 
  394. ever again be together.  I just can't take that 
  395. chance Angel!"
  396.  
  397. "Buffy!  It's not impossible.  We'll just be more 
  398. careful..."
  399.  
  400. "No!  It's not going to work.  It's just too hard
  401. to see you and not be with you.  Not kiss you?  
  402. I can't do it, Angel.  I can't.  And, you shouldn't 
  403. ask me to."
  404.  
  405. "I'm sorry, Buffy..."
  406.  
  407. "You're always sorry.  But, there's nothing we can 
  408. do.  Let's just end this, and keep our happy memories.  
  409. If we have any left," she lied cruelly.
  410.  
  411. "I have nothing but good memories of you..."
  412.  
  413. "Well, that's all you have.">
  414.  
  415. She remembered the cruelty in her voice.  She remembered 
  416. the pain in his face.  The confusion. It nearly broke 
  417. her resolve to leave him forever.  And, it did break
  418. her heart.  She remembered turning her head, so she wouldn't 
  419. have to see the pleading in his eyes.  It had taken 
  420. every ounce of strength she had to not run into his 
  421. arms, and tell him to forget it, that they would work 
  422. it out somehow.  
  423.  
  424. She hid her head in her pillow, and cried like she 
  425. never had before. 
  426.  
  427. ~~~`And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
  428. Or the moment of truth in your lies
  429. When everything feels like the movies
  430. Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive~~~
  431.  
  432. <OK, Buffy.  We'll do it your way.  I'll leave you
  433. alone.  You won't have to ever see me again."  
  434. He said, resigning himself to a life alone, without 
  435. her.
  436.  
  437. "Good," she had lowered her head so he wouldn't see 
  438. the tears in her eyes...
  439.  
  440. "I'll see you, Buffy."  He waited for something, 
  441. anything from her.  He turned and walked away.
  442.  
  443. She sank into the chair. æHe didn't want me.  He 
  444. didn't fight for me,' She thought irrationally. 
  445. Depression had taken over her mind.  What she 
  446. didn't see, as he got to the door, he turned and 
  447. looked at her.  Trying to find the strength to 
  448. leave her forever.
  449.  
  450. She cried at the memory.  She cried at her loss.  
  451. She couldn't seem to stop crying.
  452.  
  453. She lifted her head from the pillow, and through 
  454. bleary eyes, she looked at her door.  She thought 
  455. she heard her mother, but didn't hear anything 
  456. else.  She dropped her head back onto her pillow.  
  457. Some time had passed, and she wasn't sure how much.  
  458. She just didn't care.  The tears never stopped.
  459.  
  460. She pulled herself off of her bed, and turned on 
  461. the radio.  "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls was playing.  
  462. She wrapped her arms around herself, and stared into 
  463. her mirror.  Her tears continued to fall. "Good bye 
  464. Angel.  I love you." 
  465.

  508. Part 2

  510. "Buffy"
  511.  
  512. Buffy lay on her bed, following the aftermath of 
  513. her final battle with Angel.  She had physically 
  514. fought with Angelus so many times in the recent 
  515. past, but this "fight" was the hardest.  The tears 
  516. fell from her eyes as she thought of all the times 
  517. Angel was there when she needed him.  She tried to 
  518. think of all of the times he wasn't. But she couldn't.  
  519. She was unable to remember the horrible things that 
  520. had happened after she loved him so fully.  So completely.  
  521. After she gave him her soul.  She gave up so much for 
  522. this man, and when it happened, when he changed 
  523. because of her love, she did not even know.  
  524.  
  525. She knew, however, that her life was pretty much 
  526. over.  Without Angel in it, she was as good as dead.  
  527. But, it didn't matter.  Nothing mattered.  And, 
  528. nothing would ever matter again.  There was no possible 
  529. way for their love to survive.  She's a human.  A 
  530. Vampire-Slaying Human, sure, but, still a human.  
  531. And, Angel.  Well, he's a Vampire.  He is everything 
  532. she hates.  But, she doesn't hate him.  What she feels 
  533. for him does not even come close to hatred.  In fact, 
  534. it is the exact opposite.  
  535.  
  536. æHe is the exact definition of what I want in my life.  
  537. I can't think of a reason to live without him.'
  538.  
  539. ~~~And I'd give up forever to touch you
  540. 'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
  541. You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
  542. And I don't want to go home right now.~~~
  543.  
  544. She continued to think of the times he was there, 
  545. offering comfort.  He would pull her into his strong 
  546. arms, and shield her against the world.  They 
  547. fought side by side, teaching and learning from 
  548. one another over the months.  She felt they had 
  549. finally come to a place where they trusted each 
  550. other completely. Buffy knew she would never feel 
  551. the same for anyone else, ever.  He was her first 
  552. and only true love.  Nothing anyone could say would 
  553. ever change that.
  554.  
  555. Through all of the hard times of the past few months, 
  556. Buffy held onto the hope that her Angel would be 
  557. returned to her.  She could block out all of the 
  558. things that he had done.  She could erase all of the 
  559. pain he had caused her.  In the time before he changed 
  560. back to Angel, it was all she could think of to get 
  561. her through.  Especially when he was at his worst.  
  562. When he was watching her.  When he was taunting her.  
  563. When he killed Jenny.  When he tried over and over 
  564. to kill her.  To kill Giles.  To kill Willow and 
  565. Xander.
  566.  
  567. ~~~And all I can taste is this moment
  568. And all I can breathe is your life
  569. And sooner or later it's over
  570. I just don't want to miss you tonight~~~
  571.  
  572. Buffy thought she would just hide away in her room 
  573. forever.  She'd never again see the light of day or 
  574. the darkness of night.  She had just spent the worst 
  575. night of her life telling Angel to leave her alone.  
  576. To never, ever bother her again.  To never love her 
  577. again.  And, he agreed.  But, she didn't want that.  
  578. She wanted him in her life.  She wanted to be able 
  579. to run to him.  To hide away in his apartment, held 
  580. in the safety of his arms.
  581.  
  582. <NO!  That's impossible!  There is no way we can ever 
  583. again be together.  I just can't take that chance Angel!"
  584.  
  585. "Buffy!  It's not impossible.  We'll just be more careful..."
  586.  
  587. "No!  It's not going to work.  It's just too hard 
  588. to see you and not be with you.  Not kiss you?  I 
  589. can't do it, Angel.  I can't.  And, you shouldn't 
  590. ask me to."
  591.  
  592. "I'm sorry, Buffy..."
  593.  
  594. "You're always sorry.  But, there's nothing we can 
  595. do.  Let's just end this, and keep our happy memories.  
  596. If we have any left," she lied cruelly.
  597.  
  598. "I have nothing but good memories of you..."
  599.  
  600. "Well, that's all you have.">
  601.  
  602. She remembered the cruelty in her voice.  She remembered 
  603. the pain in his face.  It nearly broke her resolve 
  604. to leave him forever.  And, it did break her heart.  
  605. She remembered turning her head, so she wouldn't 
  606. have to see the pleading in his eyes.  The confusion. 
  607. It had taken every ounce of strength she had to not run 
  608. into his arms, and tell him to forget it, that 
  609. they would work it out somehow.  
  610.  
  611. She hid her head in her pillow, and cried like she 
  612. never had before. 
  613.  
  614. ~~~And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
  615. Or the moment of truth in your lies
  616. When everything feels like the movies
  617. Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive~~~
  618.  
  619. <Ok, Buffy.  We'll do it your way.  I'll leave you 
  620. alone.  You won't have to ever see me again."  He 
  621. said, resigning himself to a life alone, without her.
  622.  
  623. "Good," she had lowered her head so he wouldn't 
  624. see the tears in her eyes...
  625.  
  626. "I'll see you, Buffy."  He waited for something, 
  627. anything from her.  He turned and walked away.
  628.  
  629. She sank into the chair. æHe didn't want me.  He 
  630. didn't fight for me,' She thought irrationally. 
  631. Depression had taken over her mind. What she 
  632. didn't see, as he got to the door, he turned and 
  633. looked at her.  Trying to find the strength to 
  634. leave her forever.
  635.  
  636. She cried at the memory.  She cried at her loss.  
  637. She couldn't seem to stop crying.
  638.  
  639. She lifted her head from the pillow, and through 
  640. bleary eyes, she looked at her door.  She thought 
  641. she heard her mother, but didn't hear anything else.  
  642. She dropped her head back onto her pillow.  Some time 
  643. had passed, and she wasn't sure how much.  She just 
  644. didn't care.  The tears never stopped.
  645.  
  646. She pulled herself off of her bed, and turned on 
  647. the radio.  "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls was playing.  
  648. She wrapped her arms around herself, and stared 
  649. into her mirror.  Her tears continued to fall. 
  650. "Good bye Angel.  I love you." 
  651.  
  652. ~~~And I don't want the world to see me
  653. 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
  654. When everything's made to be broken
  655. I just want you to know who I am
