  39. SUMMARY: Things are not exactly what they seem when Giles finds an 
  40. ancient diary, with news of the death of the Slayer.  A new girl comes 
  41. to Sunnydale and things start to go crazy, Angel is jealous because 
  42. Buffy has a boyfriend and the Anointed one gets a nasty surprise...
  43. It is naturally a Buffy/Angel Romance story, cause I'm a hopeless 
  44. romantic!
  45. RATING: PG. 
  46. TIME PERIOD: Hmm, well since we have only seen up till Prophesy Girl 
  47. here in AustraliaBut I HAVE read the scripts for the rest of 
  48. them...Okay, just after Prophesy Girl and we'll leave it at that!

  67.                 Chapter 8:  Deadly Scheming

  70. "Hey Buffster!  What's happening?"  Xander's cheerful voice penetrated 
  71. Buffy's daze and made her wince.  She turned to face her two best 
  72. friends and their expectant expressions with slight apprehension.  Buffy 
  73. had seen Willow dancing with Angel the night before and it had made her 
  74. jealous...of WILLOW!  She never would have figured herself for the 
  75. jealous type, but here she was jealous of Willow AND that girl Gabriella 
  76. that Angel liked so much.  AND Gabriella might be Angel's girlfriend 
  77. too, he had not denied it.
  78.  
  79. "Hi guys, everything's cool.  Have you seen Giles around today?  He 
  80. wasn't in the Library when I wen there earlier."  Buffy asked with a 
  81. smile, while taking her Math book from her locker and then locking it 
  82. again.  Willow and Xander exchanged a look, Buffy knew when someone was 
  83. keeping something from her...and they were.
  84.  
  85. "Okay, spit it out, what do you know?"  Buffy demanded and Xander choked 
  86. on his chocolate bar.  Willow pounded him frantically on the back, 
  87. clearly trying to stall.
  88.  
  89. "Uh, know?  We know nothing, nothing at all"  Xander gasped and Willow 
  90. nodded quickly, giving her friend a sidelong look that said to keep 
  91. talking.
  92.  
  93. "Yep.  Nothing." The red-haired girl confirmed, her eyes swinging around 
  94. the locker area as if for inspiration.
  95.  
  96. "So, Uh, Buffy.  What're you doing tonight?"  Xander asked 
  97. conversationally, he put an arm around Buffy and led her away from the 
  98. lockers.  Buffy let him only because Willow had stayed behind.  As soon 
  99. as they were around the corner Buffy slipped closer to Xander and 
  100. fluttered her lashes, smiling sweetly.
  101.  
  102. "Oh Xander, do me a favor?"  Buffy said on a sugary tone and Xander 
  103. flushed, gasping like a fish for the moment at her unusual behavior.  
  104. Buffy knew he had a crush on her and usually avoided close contact.
  105.  
  106. "Sure Buff"  he stammered and her expression hardened, she grabbed his 
  107. arm and pinned it behind his back while still smiling sweetly.
  108.  
  109. "tell me what's going on.  I KNOW there's something going on...Slayer 
  110. sense and all"  she said with a shrug but just then Willow came back and 
  111. Xander shook himself free with relief.  He rushed behind Willow and 
  112. mock-cowered, using her as a shield.
  113.  
  114.  
  115. "Willow!  Buffy's trying to make me tell, stop her!"  Xander pointed to 
  116. the Slayer dramatically and Buffy grinned despite herself.  The day 
  117. might not turn out to be so bad, she thought with relief.  Just then she 
  118. spotted a tall graceful figure with incredibly long black hair and Buffy 
  119. bit her lip angrily.
  120.  
  121. "Hey Buff, you're simmering"  Xander noted and Buffy ignored him, her 
  122. eyes glued to the girl making her way through the halls at Cordelia's 
  123. side.  They were heading for the front entrance and Buffy started after 
  124. them without a word of goodbye to her friends.
  125.  
  126. "She's spacier than usual"  Willow noted back and Xander nodded.  They 
  127. had no idea what Buffy was up to, but they were going to find out.  Each 
  128. simultaneously started after their blonde friend and then laughed as 
  129. they saw they both had the same idea.
  130.  
  131. ************************************
  132.  
  133. "...And this is the front office, you'll need to sign up here..."  
  134. Cordelia was saying as Buffy strode up behind them, Cordelia noticed her 
  135. first and both girls turned to look at Buffy.
  136.  
  137. "Buffy, aren't you supposed to be with the loser squad about now?"  
  138. Cordelia said smoothly and Buffy glared, not in the mood.  Instead she 
  139. turned to Cordelia's new friend and the glare intensified.
  140.  
  141. "What are you doing here may I ask?"  Buffy almost purred, Gabriella 
  142. looked startled and Cordelia patiently incredulous.
  143.  
  144. "Buffy, surely it's obvious what we're doing, Duh"  Cordelia snapped, 
  145. taking the other girl's arm and they both entered the front office with 
  146. a steaming Buffy behind.  She watched through the glass as Gabriella 
  147. talked to the woman behind the counter and saw that Gabriella had been 
  148. told the school was full.  She would have had very little chance getting 
  149. into Sunnydale High this far into the year and Buffy felt an irrational 
  150. satisfaction.  She didn't even see her two friend's sneak down the hall 
  151. and dash behind a wall.
  152.  
  153. "This is not a good thing, Buffy's glued to the front office"  Xander 
  154. whispered as he and Willow peered around the corner.  The blonde leader 
  155. of the Slayerettes was acting far more weird than usual, and that was 
  156. saying a lot about Buffy.
  157.  
  158. Buffy expected Gabriella to leave once she found out she couldn't get 
  159. in, but then something strange seemed to happen.  The woman got a blank 
  160. look in her eyes after meeting Gabriella's gaze and then she handed over 
  161. a few forms for the dark-haired beauty to fill out.  Buffy felt a jolt 
  162. like electricity go through her body and she shivered as if someone had 
  163. walked over her grave. Minutes later Gabriella was a student at 
  164. Sunnydale High and  Buffy was flabbergasted. 
  165.  
  166. "No.  Way."  She said slowly, each word spitting from her mouth like a 
  167. bullet.  Gabriella had somehow gotten into the School with just a few 
  168. word and now Buffy had to contend with being near her rival every 
  169. day...she didn't even see as Cordelia and Gabriella left the front 
  170. office and the woman was staring out at Buffy as if she were mad.  Buffy 
  171. was staring at nothing however, her Slayer senses having gone off the 
  172. scale the moment Gabriella met the woman's eyes...
  173.

  176. Buffy couldn't wait till lunch to see where Giles had been and she raced 
  177. to the Library.  Giles looked up startled as Buffy stormed in and dumped 
  178. her bag on the desk before the Watcher.
  179.  
  180. "Buffy.  I'm glad you're here..."  Giles began and Buffy glared.
  181.  
  182. "Really?  Let me guess, someone wants to take over the world...Brain 
  183. perhaps?"  she shouted and the Watcher frowned in confusion as Buffy 
  184. raved on incoherently and stomped away.
  185.  
  186. "Is there something bothering you?"  Giles asked gently and Buffy 
  187. stopped her tirade, calming at a remarkable speed.  She came back to the 
  188. desk and flung herself into a chair, leaning her chin against her hand 
  189. pensively.
  190.  
  191. "You could say that, Giles.  What if I said that there was a new girl 
  192. and she gave me REAL weird vibes?" Buffy asked and Giles took his 
  193. glasses off to wipe them, something she noticed he did a lot when 
  194. worried.
  195.  
  196. "R-really, she makes you worried?"  Giles said and Buffy rolled her 
  197. eyes.
  198.  
  199. "That's an understatement, as usual.  I'd say it's definitely a problem, 
  200. as in my Slay-O-Meter going off the scale?"  Buffy hinted and Giles 
  201. reached immediately for his books.  He was silent for a while, then with 
  202. a nervous expression aimed in Buffy's direction, he pulled out a book 
  203. from under a pile of papers.  Buffy immediately felt something and Sat 
  204. up straighter, staring intently at the red leather cover.
  205.  
  206. "What's that Giles, a new Codex?"  Buffy asked, mystified as she reached 
  207. for it and Giles pulled it back out of her reach almost protectively.  
  208. Buffy frowned in confusion and then pouted.
  209.  
  210. "Giles!  Come on, you never let me handle any of the books!"  Buffy 
  211. almost wailed.  It took another five minutes of pouting and wailing but 
  212. Giles eventually handed over the book just as Willow and Xander entered 
  213. the Library.
  214.  
  215. "So any new disasters abroad G-man?"  Xander said good-naturedly.  Giles 
  216. frowned, replying automatically as he kept an eye on Buffy.  The blonde 
  217. seemed fascinated by the book, though he knew she couldn't read it, she 
  218. was looking at the back page as if she could and Giles panicked.
  219.  
  220. "Buffy!  Be careful, it is very old!"  he shouted, snatching it out of 
  221. her hands and they all stared at him in surprise.
  222.  
  223. "I was careful!"  Buffy protested.  She got to her feet and walked 
  224. towards the weapon's cupboard.  
  225.  
  226. "Buffy, I haven't put the 'closed for filing' sign up yet.  Anyone could 
  227. just walk...in"  he finished weakly as the doors pushed inward and 
  228. someone he had never seen in the school walked in.  She was amazingly 
  229. beautiful and Giles found himself gaping for a moment before remembering 
  230. he was supposed to be the Librarian.
  231.  
  232. "Can, can I help you?"  he stammered and she turned from a shelf to give 
  233. him a sweet smile that melted his limbs, she was wearing a white dress 
  234. that fell to her knee's and white knee boots.  Her hair was incredibly 
  235. long and dark and fell past her waist like a silken waterfall.
  236.  
  237. "I was just interested, I joined Sunnydale today and I always love to 
  238. read"  she told him quietly, her gaze was steady and there seemed to be 
  239. an infinite wisdom in her dark green eyes.  Giles felt drawn to her 
  240. immediately and barely heard the clatter of the quarter-staves as Buffy 
  241. brought them out of the weapon's cage.
  242.  
  243. "Ready for a thrashing Giles?"  she asked cheerfully.  Giles turned to 
  244. look at the Slayer in slight horror at the same time Buffy realized they 
  245. weren't alone.  Giles expected Buffy to say some story about what she 
  246. was doing with the staves but instead she was glaring with almost hatred 
  247. at the girl behind the Watcher's shoulder.
  248.  
  249. "I am sorry, I didn't know you were doing something private"  the girl 
  250. said quietly and Buffy leaned the staffs against the table, walking 
  251. closer.
  252.  
  253. "Oh, no.  We were just practicing...vampires you know"  Buffy said and 
  254. Giles gasped in horror, Willow almost fell over and Xander just gaped.
  255.  
  256. "Giles, guys, this is Gabriella.  She's Angel's new girlfriend"  Buffy 
  257. introduced the girl and Giles felt rather than saw Gabriella flinch at 
  258. Buffy's bitter words.
  259.

  262. Gabriella blinked a tear from her eye before the other's could see it, 
  263. her heart truly felt for Buffy and her anguish.  But she didn't know if 
  264. it was Angel's intention to pretend that she was his girlfriend or not.  
  265. If he wanted she was fully intending to help him out, he had to have 
  266. SOMETHING to use, Buffy had Dwayne and now Angel had Gabriella to help 
  267. him.
  268.  
  269. "Gabriella has been around a few times when I've been fighting"  Buffy 
  270. murmured.  Gabriella moved towards the table and past the girl, almost 
  271. reaching out to give the blonde comfort.  But not.  Buffy would in no 
  272. way take help from a rival.
  273.  
  274. "I didn't mean to intrude...who are your friends Buffy?"  Gabriella 
  275. asked gently and the blonde seemed to shake herself out of a kind of 
  276. trace.  She introduced the two students as her best friends and Giles as 
  277. the Librarian.  If Gabriella found this odd she said nothing and Buffy 
  278. glared at her back as Angel's girl sat down at the table like she owned 
  279. the place. 
  280.  
  281. "It IS the Library Buffy"  Giles muttered in Buffy's ear, clearly 
  282. recognizing the outraged look on the Slayer's face.  Gabriella saw the 
  283. look also and almost laughed, she talked with them for a while more and 
  284. then left.
  285.  
  286. ******************************************
  287. "...To see this Miss Calendar...it's amazing...can't translate..."  
  288. Giles voice echoed back from the halls as he and the computer teacher 
  289. walked towards the Library.  Miss calendar had seemed most interested at 
  290. the prospect of translating an unknown book.  They pushed open the doors 
  291. and walked in silently, Giles heard a slight noise and he and Miss 
  292. Calendar crept forward.  Buffy wasn't due today and neither were the 
  293. other two, school was also out so there should have been no one in the 
  294. Library at all.
  295.  
  296. "Be as quiet as you can, I'll see who is there"  Giles murmured and Miss 
  297. Calendar nodded and hide behind a book shelf near the door. Preparing to 
  298. fight if neccessary, as the Watcher inched around the counter till he 
  299. could see who was in the room.  He recognized the new girl Gabriella 
  300. immediately and almost straightened in relief, but something made his 
  301. paused and he looked closer.  He almost gasped when he saw she was 
  302. holding the precious book, the red leather covers were open and 
  303. Gabriella stroked the pages lightly.
  304.  
  305. After a moment he saw her lips move and then she began to read a loud.  
  306. But not in any language he could understand and he almost had a heart 
  307. attack when he realized she could understand and read what was written 
  308. in the pages.
  309.  
  310. "Impossible!"  Giles said more loudly than he had intended and 
  311. Gabriella's head shot up, he saw with shock that there were tears in her 
  312. green eyes and they shimmered like emeralds in the light.
  313.  
  314. "Oh"  she sniffed delicately and put the book down, still open.  Giles 
  315. moved around the counter until he was standing opposite Gabriella, the 
  316. table between them and he glanced down at the book curiously.  The pages 
  317. were open about half way through the book and he stared at the script 
  318. for a moment before glancing timidly up at her.  If she could truly read 
  319. it he wanted to know how and she could very well be the key to his 
  320. saving Buffy.
  321.  
  322. "Can you...?"  Giles started to say but Gabriella leapt to her feet with 
  323. a wary expression.  She ran swiftly and was out the door before Giles 
  324. could finish his sentence and he ran after her without thinking.
  325.  
  326. "Stop her!"  Giles yelled to Miss Calendar as Gabriella passed where she 
  327. was hiding but the teacher stood up with a confused expression.  
  328.  
  329. "What?  Giles?"  she said, turning her head to watch the girl running 
  330. swiftly out the Library doors. 
  331.  
  332. Giles felt an irrational anger and pushed past her, his eyes darting 
  333. around the school halls.  He looked left and then right, all the 
  334. classrooms were locked at night so she couldn't have gone into any of 
  335. them and the halls were long.  Gabriella had just disappeared into thin 
  336. air...
  337.

  495. "This is not a good thing, Buffy's glued to the front office"  Xander 
  496. whispered as he and Willow peered around the corner.  The blonde leader 
  497. of the Slayerettes was acting far more weird than usual, and that was 
  498. saying a lot about Buffy.
  499.  
  500. Buffy expected Gabriella to leave once she found out she couldn't get 
  501. in, but then something strange seemed to happen.  The woman got a blank 
  502. look in her eyes after meeting Gabriella's gaze and then she handed over 
  503. a few forms for the dark-haired beauty to fill out.  Buffy felt a jolt 
  504. like electricity go through her body and she shivered as if someone had 
  505. walked over her grave. Minutes later Gabriella was a student at 
  506. Sunnydale High and  Buffy was flabbergasted. 
  507.  
  508. "No.  Way."  She said slowly, each word spitting from her mouth like a 
  509. bullet.  Gabriella had somehow gotten into the School with just a few 
  510. word and now Buffy had to contend with being near her rival every 
  511. day...she didn't even see as Cordelia and Gabriella left the front 
  512. office and the woman was staring out at Buffy as if she were mad.  Buffy 
  513. was staring at nothing however, her Slayer senses having gone off the 
  514. scale the moment Gabriella met the woman's eyes...
  515.

  518. Buffy couldn't wait till lunch to see where Giles had been and she raced 
  519. to the Library.  Giles looked up startled as Buffy stormed in and dumped 
  520. her bag on the desk before the Watcher.
  521.  
  522. "Buffy.  I'm glad you're here..."  Giles began and Buffy glared.
  523.  
  524. "Really?  Let me guess, someone wants to take over the world...Brain 
  525. perhaps?"  she shouted and the Watcher frowned in confusion as Buffy 
  526. raved on incoherently and stomped away.
  527.  
  528. "Is there something bothering you?"  Giles asked gently and Buffy 
  529. stopped her tirade, calming at a remarkable speed.  She came back to the 
  530. desk and flung herself into a chair, leaning her chin against her hand 
  531. pensively.
  532.  
  533. "You could say that, Giles.  What if I said that there was a new girl 
  534. and she gave me REAL weird vibes?" Buffy asked and Giles took his 
  535. glasses off to wipe them, something she noticed he did a lot when 
  536. worried.
  537.  
  538. "R-really, she makes you worried?"  Giles said and Buffy rolled her 
  539. eyes.
  540.  
  541. "That's an understatement, as usual.  I'd say it's definitely a problem, 
  542. as in my Slay-O-Meter going off the scale?"  Buffy hinted and Giles 
  543. reached immediately for his books.  He was silent for a while, then with 
  544. a nervous expression aimed in Buffy's direction, he pulled out a book 
  545. from under a pile of papers.  Buffy immediately felt something and Sat 
  546. up straighter, staring intently at the red leather cover.
  547.  
  548. "What's that Giles, a new Codex?"  Buffy asked, mystified as she reached 
  549. for it and Giles pulled it back out of her reach almost protectively.  
  550. Buffy frowned in confusion and then pouted.
  551.  
  552. "Giles!  Come on, you never let me handle any of the books!"  Buffy 
  553. almost wailed.  It took another five minutes of pouting and wailing but 
  554. Giles eventually handed over the book just as Willow and Xander entered 
  555. the Library.
  556.  
  557. "So any new disasters abroad G-man?"  Xander said good-naturedly.  Giles 
  558. frowned, replying automatically as he kept an eye on Buffy.  The blonde 
  559. seemed fascinated by the book, though he knew she couldn't read it, she 
  560. was looking at the back page as if she could and Giles panicked.
  561.  
  562. "Buffy!  Be careful, it is very old!"  he shouted, snatching it out of 
  563. her hands and they all stared at him in surprise.
  564.  
  565. "I was careful!"  Buffy protested.  She got to her feet and walked 
  566. towards the weapon's cupboard.  
  567.  
  568. "Buffy, I haven't put the 'closed for filing' sign up yet.  Anyone could 
  569. just walk...in"  he finished weakly as the doors pushed inward and 
  570. someone he had never seen in the school walked in.  She was amazingly 
  571. beautiful and Giles found himself gaping for a moment before remembering 
  572. he was supposed to be the Librarian.
  573.  
  574. "Can, can I help you?"  he stammered and she turned from a shelf to give 
  575. him a sweet smile that melted his limbs, she was wearing a white dress 
  576. that fell to her knee's and white knee boots.  Her hair was incredibly 
  577. long and dark and fell past her waist like a silken waterfall.
  578.  
  579. "I was just interested, I joined Sunnydale today and I always love to 
  580. read"  she told him quietly, her gaze was steady and there seemed to be 
  581. an infinite wisdom in her dark green eyes.  Giles felt drawn to her 
  582. immediately and barely heard the clatter of the quarter-staves as Buffy 
  583. brought them out of the weapon's cage.
  584.  
  585. "Ready for a thrashing Giles?"  she asked cheerfully.  Giles turned to 
  586. look at the Slayer in slight horror at the same time Buffy realized they 
  587. weren't alone.  Giles expected Buffy to say some story about what she 
  588. was doing with the staves but instead she was glaring with almost hatred 
  589. at the girl behind the Watcher's shoulder.
  590.  
  591. "I am sorry, I didn't know you were doing something private"  the girl 
  592. said quietly and Buffy leaned the staffs against the table, walking 
  593. closer.
  594.  
  595. "Oh, no.  We were just practicing...vampires you know"  Buffy said and 
  596. Giles gasped in horror, Willow almost fell over and Xander just gaped.
  597.  
  598. "Giles, guys, this is Gabriella.  She's Angel's new girlfriend"  Buffy 
  599. introduced the girl and Giles felt rather than saw Gabriella flinch at 
  600. Buffy's bitter words.
  601.

  604. Gabriella blinked a tear from her eye before the other's could see it, 
  605. her heart truly felt for Buffy and her anguish.  But she didn't know if 
  606. it was Angel's intention to pretend that she was his girlfriend or not.  
  607. If he wanted she was fully intending to help him out, he had to have 
  608. SOMETHING to use, Buffy had Dwayne and now Angel had Gabriella to help 
  609. him.
  610.  
  611. "Gabriella has been around a few times when I've been fighting"  Buffy 
  612. murmured.  Gabriella moved towards the table and past the girl, almost 
  613. reaching out to give the blonde comfort.  But not.  Buffy would in no 
  614. way take help from a rival.
  615.  
  616. "I didn't mean to intrude...who are your friends Buffy?"  Gabriella 
  617. asked gently and the blonde seemed to shake herself out of a kind of 
  618. trace.  She introduced the two students as her best friends and Giles as 
  619. the Librarian.  If Gabriella found this odd she said nothing and Buffy 
  620. glared at her back as Angel's girl sat down at the table like she owned 
  621. the place. 
  622.  
  623. "It IS the Library Buffy"  Giles muttered in Buffy's ear, clearly 
  624. recognizing the outraged look on the Slayer's face.  Gabriella saw the 
  625. look also and almost laughed, she talked with them for a while more and 
  626. then left.
  627.  
  628. ******************************************
  629. "...To see this Miss Calendar...it's amazing...can't translate..."  
  630. Giles voice echoed back from the halls as he and the computer teacher 
  631. walked towards the Library.  Miss calendar had seemed most interested at 
  632. the prospect of translating an unknown book.  They pushed open the doors 
  633. and walked in silently, Giles heard a slight noise and he and Miss 
  634. Calendar crept forward.  Buffy wasn't due today and neither were the 
  635. other two, school was also out so there should have been no one in the 
  636. Library at all.
  637.  
  638. "Be as quiet as you can, I'll see who is there"  Giles murmured and Miss 
  639. Calendar nodded and hide behind a book shelf near the door. Preparing to 
  640. fight if neccessary, as the Watcher inched around the counter till he 
  641. could see who was in the room.  He recognized the new girl Gabriella 
  642. immediately and almost straightened in relief, but something made his 
  643. paused and he looked closer.  He almost gasped when he saw she was 
  644. holding the precious book, the red leather covers were open and 
  645. Gabriella stroked the pages lightly.
  646.  
  647. After a moment he saw her lips move and then she began to read a loud.  
  648. But not in any language he could understand and he almost had a heart 
  649. attack when he realized she could understand and read what was written 
  650. in the pages.
  651.  
  652. "Impossible!"  Giles said more loudly than he had intended and 
  653. Gabriella's head shot up, he saw with shock that there were tears in her 
  654. green eyes and they shimmered like emeralds in the light.
  655.  
  656. "Oh"  she sniffed delicately and put the book down, still open.  Giles 
  657. moved around the counter until he was standing opposite Gabriella, the 
  658. table between them and he glanced down at the book curiously.  The pages 
  659. were open about half way through the book and he stared at the script 
  660. for a moment before glancing timidly up at her.  If she could truly read 
  661. it he wanted to know how and she could very well be the key to his 
  662. saving Buffy.
  663.  
  664. "Can you...?"  Giles started to say but Gabriella leapt to her feet with 
  665. a wary expression.  She ran swiftly and was out the door before Giles 
  666. could finish his sentence and he ran after her without thinking.
  667.  
  668. "Stop her!"  Giles yelled to Miss Calendar as Gabriella passed where she 
  669. was hiding but the teacher stood up with a confused expression.  
  670.  
  671. "What?  Giles?"  she said, turning her head to watch the girl running 
  672. swiftly out the Library doors. 
  673.  
  674. Giles felt an irrational anger and pushed past her, his eyes darting 
  675. around the school halls.  He looked left and then right, all the 
  676. classrooms were locked at night so she couldn't have gone into any of 
  677. them and the halls were long.  Gabriella had just disappeared into thin 
  678. air...
  679.  
  680. "I want to take you where the night never ends..." 
  681.
