  39. Summary: Angel and Buffy discussed stuff. 
  40. Spoilers: uh- What's My Line? Definitely before S/I, though.
  41. Disclaimer: In no way am I creative enough to come up with the 
  42. characters used in this story.  If you recognize anything, it's not 
  43. mine, and belongs to the evil Joss.
  44. Warnings: Some violence, a little angst.
  45. Rating: PG/PG13

  47. Author's Note: Nearly every piece of feedback I get is just a request 
  48. for story parts. I'm ceretainly willing to send previous parts, but I 
  49. need oppinions/critisisms/ANYTHING! Please, people, tell me what you

  53. The Third Child: (3/?)

  58. Angel stared down at the Slayer as she slept.  She had cried 
  59. on his shoulder for hours; pleading with him not to leave.  
  60. It broke his heart to see her hurting and know that he was 
  61. the cause, and the pain was made even worse by the knowledge 
  62. that a few words from him could have lifted her spirits and 
  63. stopped her tears.  The remembered sight of her sobbing almost 
  64. caused him to break down; but he summoned the memory of 
  65. Rasitin, and the image of those insane, hate-filled eyes was 
  66. enough to bolster his resolve.  As a vampire, Rasitin had been 
  67. his greatest triumph - but even then, when he'd been considered 
  68. one of the most vicious and dangerous vampires *ever* to walk 
  69. the night, he had feared Rasitin.
  70.     
  71. He glanced slowly around the room, trying to remember every 
  72. aspect of his apartment, of the sleeping Slayer, of the life 
  73. he'd managed to build for himself that he would now be forced to 
  74. leave behind.  Closing his eyes, he bent down next to Buffy and 
  75. kissed her on the forehead gently.  Then, before he could change 
  76. his mind, he turned and left his apartment, refusing to look back 
  77. for fear that if he did he would be unable to make himself leave.

  81. "I don't suppose you'd care to share this wonderful plan of yours, 
  82. mate?" Spike inquired sarcastically.
  83.     
  84. The laugh he got in return was chilling in it's emptiness.  
  85. "Spike, don't you trust me?  Have you *ever* known me to fail to 
  86. take my target?"
  87.     
  88. "I just don't understand your game.  Why not just kill the bloody 
  89. Slayer? And, for that matter, how in Hell did she kill your pet 
  90. demonling?"
  91.     
  92. "I had been under the impression," drawled the figure in a soft 
  93. voice, "That you were interested in more than simply their 
  94. deaths; I came here because you wanted *suffering*.  And she 
  95. didn't kill my wraith; I banished it."
  96.     
  97. "Why?!?!  If you wanted to play with the girl, why not grab her 
  98. when your pet had her down?  What - "
  99.     
  100. "You know Spike," the other vampire hissed, "this constant 
  101. questioning is starting to get on my nerves.  I wanted the 
  102. Slayer to take a message for me, and I needed to give it the 
  103. right look.  By now Angelus knows I'm here, and his actions are 
  104. pathetically easy to predict.  He'll run.  He's so besotted with
  105. that little Slayer that he'll try to play the martyr, draw me 
  106. away from her."
  107.     
  108. "*So what?*"
  109.     
  110. "You're pathetic.  You spent all that time with Angelus and I, 
  111. and you still don't understand.  If you want to hurt someone, 
  112. you find out what they fear the most, and give it to them.  I 
  113. wanted to be sure of Angelus' fear; now that I am, I've sent 
  114. Beltarz to fetch him on his way out of town."
  115.     
  116. "And Beltarz is who?"
  117.     
  118. "My familiar demon," Rasitin whispered.
  119.     
  120. Spike turned away to escape those frightening, staring, 
  121. insane, *empty* eyes, and wondered, not for the first time, 
  122. how it was that Angel had managed to turn relatively normal 
  123. people into none-to-sane weapons.

  127. On the other side of Sunnydale, a man knelt over the crumpled 
  128. body of a little girl. Looking up he snarled in wordless rage.  
  129. I didn't care one way or the other about them, but I swear I 
  130. will find whoever did this, and deliver them to the cold embrace 
  131. of my Master.  The rain slashed against him as he stared into
  132. nothing with hatred in his eyes.

  164.        *She's right. I can't save her. I can't protect her 
  165. any more now than I ever could.  Buffy is the slayer, not me; 
  166. but I just can't stand around and do nothing. I love her.*
  167.         Xander walked slowly through the halls of the hospital. 
  168. Not sure where to go, he just walked, avoiding reaching a 
  169. destination.  
  170.         "Watch it, sir!" A nurse cried out as she ran into Xander. 
  171.         "Oh, sorry." The words were almost silent. He was too 
  172. caught up in his own thoughts about Buffy, about everything, to 
  173. notice what he was doing.  Walking steadily through the middle 
  174. of the hallway, Xander was an obstacle for everyone who walked by. 
  175.         "Excuse me?" A doctor asked as he saw Xander walking in 
  176. a daze.
  177.         "Huh?" Xander stopped a few steps away from walking into 
  178. a wall. 
  179.         "Are you okay?" 
  180.         "Uh, yeah. I'm just...uh, walking." 
  181.         "I noticed that. Walking into a wall is more like it.  
  182. Can I help you find something?"
  183.         "Oh no. My friend is here...in the hospital. I'm just...
  184. here." The words didn't make much sense to him, but he didn't 
  185. know what he was doing so he couldn't explain it to the doctor.
  186.         "Okay, well, you might want to be a bit more conscious of 
  187. where you are going. You're near the psyche ward here and if 
  188. you're not careful, someone may mistake you for a patient." The 
  189. doctor smiled, hoping Xander would too.
  190.         "Oh. Didn't think about that. Thanks."  Xander just turned 
  191. and walked away.  Maybe he would get lucky and someone 
  192. would emit him.  Time in a padded room might be beneficial to 
  193. his life.  He was so preoccupied with his feelings for Buffy that he 
  194. paid no attention to everything he had.   Pretty soon, that 
  195. distraction was going to cost him more than he could afford to 
  196. loose. 
  197.         Cordelia was great but he was always to busy looking at 
  198. who she wasn't to realize who she was.  *Why does she even stick 
  199. by me?  Sure, she's not the kindest and most sincere person in the 
  200. world, but she actually likes me. She sees something in me that 
  201. few people actually see.  Awe, hell, that probably makes her even 
  202. crazier than I am.*
  203.         Xander stood outside the door to Buffy's room. Angel was sitting 
  204. in a corner, waiting for the sun to go down so he could leave. 
  205. *Why is this so difficult? Buffy has Angel, I have Cordelia, why 
  206. can't I get that through my thick skull?!?' Xander argued with 
  207. himself. 'I've got to let her go. She's my best friend and 
  208. nothing more. I've got to let her go!*
  209.         "Xander?"
  210.         "Yeah?" Xander turned to see Giles--who hadn't slept in 
  211. days--standing behind him.  "Giles, don't take this the wrong way
  212. but you look terrible. Go home and get some rest!"
  213.         "Oh, I guess I should. I just want to make sure that Buffy
  214. will be okay."
  215.         "Giles she'll be fine. She's out of the woods now. Let her 
  216. recuperate. She'll need you to be strong and preferably awake when 
  217. she's feeling better." Hearing the words come out of his own mouth 
  218. almost scared him. Buffy is going to be okay. She has Angel now, 
  219. for good. As much as the thought of Angel and Buffy made him sick, 
  220. it was comforting to know that Angel would always protect Buffy 
  221. and now, was no longer a threat to her life.  Just her heart.
  222.         "Yes, I suppose you're right. Will you be staying?" 
  223.         "Yeah. I've got no where else to be." Xander stepped away 
  224. from the door to let a nurse go in. 
  225.         "Home?" 
  226.         "Parents are out of town. I'd rather stay here and keep an 
  227. eye on Buff. Don't worry. Go home, get sleep, come back and then 
  228. be the watcher."
  229.         "Okay." Giles forced a smile as he noticed how tired Xander 
  230. looked himself.  "Goodnight."
  231.         "Goodnight."

  265.        "I just don't get it. After all he's done to her, how can she just 
  266. take him back?" Cordelia asked as she grabbed a cup of coffee.
  267.         "Isn't it obvious? It's that Savarah. I bet she brainwashed 
  268. her or something. Either that or Buffy's gone insane." Xander had a 
  269. tray of hospital food that he was pushing down the counter towards 
  270. the cashier. 
  271.         "Xander! She's been through a lot. Don't you think she 
  272. deserves the slightest bit of support on your part?" Willow said, 
  273. finally breaking into the argument. "I mean, he makes me nervous 
  274. too, but if Giles thinks it's alright..."
  275.         "Hey, I'm supportive guy; I just don't agree with her reasons.  
  276. She brought the devil back to life to save the guy who broke her 
  277. heart and her soul."
  278.         "He's also the only guy she ever loved." Willow said, 
  279. quietly.
  280.         "Xander, I agree with you about Angel, but you've got to lay off 
  281. of Buffy.  She's got a hell of a lot on her shoulders and she doesn't 
  282. need your overprotective, criticizing self to make this any more 
  283. difficult than it already is!" Cordelia couldn't control herself. She 
  284. had no choice, he had to be stopped. If he wanted to criticize Angel, 
  285. fine; but Buffy wasn't at fault. She knew it would hit Xander hard, but 
  286. he had to realize that Buffy loved Angel and his chances with her no 
  287. longer existed.  
  288.         It was all so painful. Why did she love a guy who was head over  
  289. heals in love with another woman who didn't love him back? Sure, 
  290. he cared about her, but it wasn't the same.  Buffy was always 
  291. first on his list.  
  292.         Xander froze, unable to move or speak. He just looked at 
  293. her, hoping she would take that back.  After several minutes of 
  294. holding up the line, they made their way to a table in the 
  295. cafeteria.  They all sat down, eyeing each other carefully to see 
  296. who would make the first move to break the silence.
  297.         "And I thought our school food was bad," Xander finally 
  298. said as he poked at his plate.
  299.         "I never thought I'd say this but, I actually miss our 
  300. school lunch," Willow said. She pushed her tray away from herself.
  301. Cordelia hadn't even bothered to get anything; she'd just grabbed a 
  302. cup of coffee.
  303.         'Look at him, he's so hurt. Why'd I have to sound so 
  304. mean?' Cordelia watched Xander from across the table, hoping his 
  305. sad face would change. ' Because I had no choice; he was out of 
  306. control.  Buffy didn't need him to keep opposing her in her trials with 
  307. Angel. Just what she needed, the two guys who loved her, fighting 
  308. against her. Maybe it will end now, now that Angel is back. Maybe 
  309. it won't.'
  310.         The sound of Xander's chair screeching across the floor 
  311. interrupted Cordelia's thoughts. "I'm not hungry enough to eat this. I'm 
  312. gonna head back and check on Buffy."
  313.         "Xander, you can't. Angel's there with her. Let them have some
  314. time alone," Willow said, glaring at him.
  315.         "I don't think so. Every time those two are alone, they get 
  316. themselves into some sort of trouble." Xander started to turn and
  317. walk away but Willow stopped him.
  318.         "What? And you're going to save them this time? Dammit 
  319. Xander, give it up!  Buffy will be okay without you. You can't 
  320. always be there to catch her when she falls!" Willow now forced 
  321. herself to her feet to keep at his eye level. 
  322.         "I've got to do something." He turned and walked away. 
  323. Cordelia kept her mouth shut, afraid of the reaction it may get 
  324. her. 
  325.         She just stood there, waiting for him to come back and 
  326. apologize. Waiting so she could apologize.

  498.         The sound of Xander's chair screeching across the floor 
  499. interrupted Cordelia's thoughts. "I'm not hungry enough to eat this. I'm 
  500. gonna head back and check on Buffy."
  501.         "Xander, you can't. Angel's there with her. Let them have some
  502. time alone," Willow said, glaring at him.
  503.         "I don't think so. Every time those two are alone, they get 
  504. themselves into some sort of trouble." Xander started to turn and
  505. walk away but Willow stopped him.
  506.         "What? And you're going to save them this time? Dammit 
  507. Xander, give it up!  Buffy will be okay without you. You can't 
  508. always be there to catch her when she falls!" Willow now forced 
  509. herself to her feet to keep at his eye level. 
  510.         "I've got to do something." He turned and walked away. 
  511. Cordelia kept her mouth shut, afraid of the reaction it may get 
  512. her. 
  513.         She just stood there, waiting for him to come back and 
  514. apologize. Waiting so she could apologize.

  564.                 Chapter 8:  Deadly Scheming

  567. "Hey Buffster!  What's happening?"  Xander's cheerful voice penetrated 
  568. Buffy's daze and made her wince.  She turned to face her two best 
  569. friends and their expectant expressions with slight apprehension.  Buffy 
  570. had seen Willow dancing with Angel the night before and it had made her 
  571. jealous...of WILLOW!  She never would have figured herself for the 
  572. jealous type, but here she was jealous of Willow AND that girl Gabriella 
  573. that Angel liked so much.  AND Gabriella might be Angel's girlfriend 
  574. too, he had not denied it.
  575.  
  576. "Hi guys, everything's cool.  Have you seen Giles around today?  He 
  577. wasn't in the Library when I wen there earlier."  Buffy asked with a 
  578. smile, while taking her Math book from her locker and then locking it 
  579. again.  Willow and Xander exchanged a look, Buffy knew when someone was 
  580. keeping something from her...and they were.
  581.  
  582. "Okay, spit it out, what do you know?"  Buffy demanded and Xander choked 
  583. on his chocolate bar.  Willow pounded him frantically on the back, 
  584. clearly trying to stall.
  585.  
  586. "Uh, know?  We know nothing, nothing at all"  Xander gasped and Willow 
  587. nodded quickly, giving her friend a sidelong look that said to keep 
  588. talking.
  589.  
  590. "Yep.  Nothing." The red-haired girl confirmed, her eyes swinging around 
  591. the locker area as if for inspiration.
  592.  
  593. "So, Uh, Buffy.  What're you doing tonight?"  Xander asked 
  594. conversationally, he put an arm around Buffy and led her away from the 
  595. lockers.  Buffy let him only because Willow had stayed behind.  As soon 
  596. as they were around the corner Buffy slipped closer to Xander and 
  597. fluttered her lashes, smiling sweetly.
  598.  
  599. "Oh Xander, do me a favor?"  Buffy said on a sugary tone and Xander 
  600. flushed, gasping like a fish for the moment at her unusual behavior.  
  601. Buffy knew he had a crush on her and usually avoided close contact.
  602.  
  603. "Sure Buff"  he stammered and her expression hardened, she grabbed his 
  604. arm and pinned it behind his back while still smiling sweetly.
  605.  
  606. "tell me what's going on.  I KNOW there's something going on...Slayer 
  607. sense and all"  she said with a shrug but just then Willow came back and 
  608. Xander shook himself free with relief.  He rushed behind Willow and 
  609. mock-cowered, using her as a shield.
  610.  
  611.  
  612. "Willow!  Buffy's trying to make me tell, stop her!"  Xander pointed to 
  613. the Slayer dramatically and Buffy grinned despite herself.  The day 
  614. might not turn out to be so bad, she thought with relief.  Just then she 
  615. spotted a tall graceful figure with incredibly long black hair and Buffy 
  616. bit her lip angrily.
  617.  
  618. "Hey Buff, you're simmering"  Xander noted and Buffy ignored him, her 
  619. eyes glued to the girl making her way through the halls at Cordelia's 
  620. side.  They were heading for the front entrance and Buffy started after 
  621. them without a word of goodbye to her friends.
  622.  
  623. "She's spacier than usual"  Willow noted back and Xander nodded.  They 
  624. had no idea what Buffy was up to, but they were going to find out.  Each 
  625. simultaneously started after their blonde friend and then laughed as 
  626. they saw they both had the same idea.
  627.  
  628. ************************************
  629.  
  630. "...And this is the front office, you'll need to sign up here..."  
  631. Cordelia was saying as Buffy strode up behind them, Cordelia noticed her 
  632. first and both girls turned to look at Buffy.
  633.  
  634. "Buffy, aren't you supposed to be with the loser squad about now?"  
  635. Cordelia said smoothly and Buffy glared, not in the mood.  Instead she 
  636. turned to Cordelia's new friend and the glare intensified.
  637.  
  638. "What are you doing here may I ask?"  Buffy almost purred, Gabriella 
  639. looked startled and Cordelia patiently incredulous.
  640.  
  641. "Buffy, surely it's obvious what we're doing, Duh"  Cordelia snapped, 
  642. taking the other girl's arm and they both entered the front office with 
  643. a steaming Buffy behind.  She watched through the glass as Gabriella 
  644. talked to the woman behind the counter and saw that Gabriella had been 
  645. told the school was full.  She would have had very little chance getting 
  646. into Sunnydale High this far into the year and Buffy felt an irrational 
  647. satisfaction.  She didn't even see her two friend's sneak down the hall 
  648. and dash behind a wall.
  649.  
  650. "This is not a good thing, Buffy's glued to the front office"  Xander 
  651. whispered as he and Willow peered around the corner.  The blonde leader 
  652. of the Slayerettes was acting far more weird than usual, and that was 
  653. saying a lot about Buffy.
  654.  
  655. Buffy expected Gabriella to leave once she found out she couldn't get 
  656. in, but then something strange seemed to happen.  The woman got a blank 
  657. look in her eyes after meeting Gabriella's gaze and then she handed over 
  658. a few forms for the dark-haired beauty to fill out.  Buffy felt a jolt 
  659. like electricity go through her body and she shivered as if someone had 
  660. walked over her grave. Minutes later Gabriella was a student at 
  661. Sunnydale High and  Buffy was flabbergasted. 
  662.  
  663. "No.  Way."  She said slowly, each word spitting from her mouth like a 
  664. bullet.  Gabriella had somehow gotten into the School with just a few 
  665. word and now Buffy had to contend with being near her rival every 
  666. day...she didn't even see as Cordelia and Gabriella left the front 
  667. office and the woman was staring out at Buffy as if she were mad.  Buffy 
  668. was staring at nothing however, her Slayer senses having gone off the 
  669. scale the moment Gabriella met the woman's eyes...
  670.

  673. Buffy couldn't wait till lunch to see where Giles had been and she raced 
  674. to the Library.  Giles looked up startled as Buffy stormed in and dumped 
  675. her bag on the desk before the Watcher.
  676.  
  677. "Buffy.  I'm glad you're here..."  Giles began and Buffy glared.
  678.  
  679. "Really?  Let me guess, someone wants to take over the world...Brain 
  680. perhaps?"  she shouted and the Watcher frowned in confusion as Buffy 
  681. raved on incoherently and stomped away.
  682.  
  683. "Is there something bothering you?"  Giles asked gently and Buffy 
  684. stopped her tirade, calming at a remarkable speed.  She came back to the 
  685. desk and flung herself into a chair, leaning her chin against her hand 
  686. pensively.
  687.  
  688. "You could say that, Giles.  What if I said that there was a new girl 
  689. and she gave me REAL weird vibes?" Buffy asked and Giles took his 
  690. glasses off to wipe them, something she noticed he did a lot when 
  691. worried.
  692.  
  693. "R-really, she makes you worried?"  Giles said and Buffy rolled her 
  694. eyes.
  695.  
  696. "That's an understatement, as usual.  I'd say it's definitely a problem, 
  697. as in my Slay-O-Meter going off the scale?"  Buffy hinted and Giles 
  698. reached immediately for his books.  He was silent for a while, then with 
  699. a nervous expression aimed in Buffy's direction, he pulled out a book 
  700. from under a pile of papers.  Buffy immediately felt something and Sat 
  701. up straighter, staring intently at the red leather cover.
  702.  
  703. "What's that Giles, a new Codex?"  Buffy asked, mystified as she reached 
  704. for it and Giles pulled it back out of her reach almost protectively.  
  705. Buffy frowned in confusion and then pouted.
  706.  
  707. "Giles!  Come on, you never let me handle any of the books!"  Buffy 
  708. almost wailed.  It took another five minutes of pouting and wailing but 
  709. Giles eventually handed over the book just as Willow and Xander entered 
  710. the Library.
  711.  
  712. "So any new disasters abroad G-man?"  Xander said good-naturedly.  Giles 
  713. frowned, replying automatically as he kept an eye on Buffy.  The blonde 
  714. seemed fascinated by the book, though he knew she couldn't read it, she 
  715. was looking at the back page as if she could and Giles panicked.
  716.  
  717. "Buffy!  Be careful, it is very old!"  he shouted, snatching it out of 
  718. her hands and they all stared at him in surprise.
  719.  
  720. "I was careful!"  Buffy protested.  She got to her feet and walked 
  721. towards the weapon's cupboard.  
  722.  
  723. "Buffy, I haven't put the 'closed for filing' sign up yet.  Anyone could 
  724. just walk...in"  he finished weakly as the doors pushed inward and 
  725. someone he had never seen in the school walked in.  She was amazingly 
  726. beautiful and Giles found himself gaping for a moment before remembering 
  727. he was supposed to be the Librarian.
  728.  
  729. "Can, can I help you?"  he stammered and she turned from a shelf to give 
  730. him a sweet smile that melted his limbs, she was wearing a white dress 
  731. that fell to her knee's and white knee boots.  Her hair was incredibly 
  732. long and dark and fell past her waist like a silken waterfall.
  733.  
  734. "I was just interested, I joined Sunnydale today and I always love to 
  735. read"  she told him quietly, her gaze was steady and there seemed to be 
  736. an infinite wisdom in her dark green eyes.  Giles felt drawn to her 
  737. immediately and barely heard the clatter of the quarter-staves as Buffy 
  738. brought them out of the weapon's cage.
  739.  
  740. "Ready for a thrashing Giles?"  she asked cheerfully.  Giles turned to 
  741. look at the Slayer in slight horror at the same time Buffy realized they 
  742. weren't alone.  Giles expected Buffy to say some story about what she 
  743. was doing with the staves but instead she was glaring with almost hatred 
  744. at the girl behind the Watcher's shoulder.
  745.  
  746. "I am sorry, I didn't know you were doing something private"  the girl 
  747. said quietly and Buffy leaned the staffs against the table, walking 
  748. closer.
  749.  
  750. "Oh, no.  We were just practicing...vampires you know"  Buffy said and 
  751. Giles gasped in horror, Willow almost fell over and Xander just gaped.
  752.  
  753. "Giles, guys, this is Gabriella.  She's Angel's new girlfriend"  Buffy 
  754. introduced the girl and Giles felt rather than saw Gabriella flinch at 
  755. Buffy's bitter words.
  756.

  758.  
  759. Gabriella blinked a tear from her eye before the other's could see it, 
  760. her heart truly felt for Buffy and her anguish.  But she didn't know if 
  761. it was Angel's intention to pretend that she was his girlfriend or not.  
  762. If he wanted she was fully intending to help him out, he had to have 
  763. SOMETHING to use, Buffy had Dwayne and now Angel had Gabriella to help 
  764. him.
  765.  
  766. "Gabriella has been around a few times when I've been fighting"  Buffy 
  767. murmured.  Gabriella moved towards the table and past the girl, almost 
  768. reaching out to give the blonde comfort.  But not.  Buffy would in no 
  769. way take help from a rival.
  770.  
  771. "I didn't mean to intrude...who are your friends Buffy?"  Gabriella 
  772. asked gently and the blonde seemed to shake herself out of a kind of 
  773. trace.  She introduced the two students as her best friends and Giles as 
  774. the Librarian.  If Gabriella found this odd she said nothing and Buffy 
  775. glared at her back as Angel's girl sat down at the table like she owned 
  776. the place. 
  777.  
  778. "It IS the Library Buffy"  Giles muttered in Buffy's ear, clearly 
  779. recognizing the outraged look on the Slayer's face.  Gabriella saw the 
  780. look also and almost laughed, she talked with them for a while more and 
  781. then left.
  782.  
  783. ******************************************
  784. "...To see this Miss Calendar...it's amazing...can't translate..."  
  785. Giles voice echoed back from the halls as he and the computer teacher 
  786. walked towards the Library.  Miss calendar had seemed most interested at 
  787. the prospect of translating an unknown book.  They pushed open the doors 
  788. and walked in silently, Giles heard a slight noise and he and Miss 
  789. Calendar crept forward.  Buffy wasn't due today and neither were the 
  790. other two, school was also out so there should have been no one in the 
  791. Library at all.
  792.  
  793. "Be as quiet as you can, I'll see who is there"  Giles murmured and Miss 
  794. Calendar nodded and hide behind a book shelf near the door. Preparing to 
  795. fight if neccessary, as the Watcher inched around the counter till he 
  796. could see who was in the room.  He recognized the new girl Gabriella 
  797. immediately and almost straightened in relief, but something made his 
  798. paused and he looked closer.  He almost gasped when he saw she was 
  799. holding the precious book, the red leather covers were open and 
  800. Gabriella stroked the pages lightly.
  801.  
  802. After a moment he saw her lips move and then she began to read a loud.  
  803. But not in any language he could understand and he almost had a heart 
  804. attack when he realized she could understand and read what was written 
  805. in the pages.
  806.  
  807. "Impossible!"  Giles said more loudly than he had intended and 
  808. Gabriella's head shot up, he saw with shock that there were tears in her 
  809. green eyes and they shimmered like emeralds in the light.
  810.  
  811. "Oh"  she sniffed delicately and put the book down, still open.  Giles 
  812. moved around the counter until he was standing opposite Gabriella, the 
  813. table between them and he glanced down at the book curiously.  The pages 
  814. were open about half way through the book and he stared at the script 
  815. for a moment before glancing timidly up at her.  If she could truly read 
  816. it he wanted to know how and she could very well be the key to his 
  817. saving Buffy.
  818.  
  819. "Can you...?"  Giles started to say but Gabriella leapt to her feet with 
  820. a wary expression.  She ran swiftly and was out the door before Giles 
  821. could finish his sentence and he ran after her without thinking.
  822.  
  823. "Stop her!"  Giles yelled to Miss Calendar as Gabriella passed where she 
  824. was hiding but the teacher stood up with a confused expression.  
  825.  
  826. "What?  Giles?"  she said, turning her head to watch the girl running 
  827. swiftly out the Library doors. 
  828.  
  829. Giles felt an irrational anger and pushed past her, his eyes darting 
  830. around the school halls.  He looked left and then right, all the 
  831. classrooms were locked at night so she couldn't have gone into any of 
  832. them and the halls were long.  Gabriella had just disappeared into thin 
  833. air...
  834.  
  835. "I want to take you where the night never ends..." 
  836.
