  56. property of Joss Whedon and the WB.  I'm just borrowing them to amuse
  57. myself during these hellish weeks of reruns.  If Joss can screw up the 
  58. characters lives, well darn it, as an almighty fic writer, I can mess with 
  59. them too.  Just remember that his is real and mine is just pretend.  So
  60. if I do something you don't like, tell yourself it's only a story.

  62. Note:  I'm amusing myself.  Thought it'd be fair to let you know before 
  63. you read.  See how nice I am.  Be prepared.

  66. Rendevous with Midnight
  67.

  69. Darkness. It was all she saw, all she felt. All around her there was 
  70. nothing but darkness. She walked down the street, oblivious to her 
  71. surroundings, focusing only on the dark. She could sense him near, knew 
  72. he was waiting for her. She knew it was dangerous, knew he had no qualms 
  73. about taking her life. But somehow, she couldn't resist the darkness. 
  74. She couldn't resist him. 
  75.  
  76. She stopped at the entrance to the apartment, her mind giving one last 
  77. scream for her to leave. She was unarmed, her mind totally unfocused on 
  78. destroying him. She was't ready to kill him, didn't think she'd ever be 
  79. ready to truly defeat him. She knew that she should be running away, 
  80. knew she should be trying to save her life. But some little part of her 
  81. wanted to be there, some part of her needed the darkness that surrounded 
  82. him. So, with total disregard for her life, she took that final step 
  83. into the apartment, into his domain. 
  84.  
  85. He was sitting there waiting for her. She spotted him as soon as she 
  86. stepped over the threshold. His eyes were focused intently on her, a 
  87. slight smile graced his lips. As she walked toward him she wondered what 
  88. the smile was for. She knew it wasn't because of past memories of this 
  89. place, knew it wasn't because he cared about the time they'd spent in 
  90. this room. No, the smile had to be there because he was certain she 
  91. couldn't stay away from him. She would do anything to be with him. Even 
  92. give up her life. 
  93.  
  94. He stood up suddenly and she halted her steps, not sure of what to do 
  95. next. He held out a hand and, with only the slightest hesitation, she 
  96. took it. He hauled her roughly to him, his arms crushing her against his 
  97. chest. 
  98.  
  99. "Are you going to kill me?" she asked him casually, as if they were 
  100. talking about the weather. It surprised her that she wasn't afraid to 
  101. die. 
  102.  
  103. Angelus raised an eyebrow as he looked down at her. "Maybe," he answered 
  104. with a shrug. "I haven't really decided yet. Why? In a hurry to die?" 
  105.  
  106. Buffy smiled. "No, just wanted to be up to date on things." 
  107.  
  108. "Glad I could oblige." He leaned down until his lips were just a breath 
  109. above hers. "Why are you here?" 
  110.  
  111. That was one of many questions she couldn't answer. What was she doing 
  112. there? She'd been asking herself that question all the way over here. 
  113. Why couldn't she stay away from him? Why did she always come back, 
  114. knowing that he could kill her, understanding that her weakness, her 
  115. inabilty to destroy him, made him stronger? Why did she keep torturing 
  116. herself? Why couldn't she reject the darkness? Why was she so entranced 
  117. by him, the creature so intent on making her suffer? 
  118.  
  119. Those were questions she feared she would never know the answers to. 
  120. They were too hard, too complex. She just didn't know how to answer 
  121. them. Maybe there was no answer. Maybe it was all some big joke. She 
  122. smiled, briefly, as she pictured the higher powers looking down upon 
  123. them, entertained, as they silently manipulated their latest toys. Make 
  124. the Slayer attracted to her enemy, she thought with a look at the 
  125. ceiling. I hope you like the show we're giving you. 
  126.  
  127. She turned her attention back to the one holding her in his arms, 
  128. looking deep into his eyes searching for answers, only to receive more 
  129. questions. Looking into the depths of his eyes, eyes that held no 
  130. emotion, no hint of feeling whatsoever, not anger, not hate, not love, 
  131. she saw herself. In his eyes she saw what drew them together, she saw 
  132. what forced them to back to each other, despite the hate. In his eyes 
  133. she saw darkness. The same darkness she saw in herself. 
  134.  
  135. Pulling herself from her thoughts she focused on Angelus. He was still 
  136. watching her, waiting patiently for her answer to his question. She had 
  137. a feeling, though, that he already knew the answer. 
  138.  
  139. "Why am I here?" she repeated the question, finally ready to speak. "I'm 
  140. here because I can't help but be here. We're connected. We can't fight 
  141. it. We're drawn together and though we hate it, we go along with it 
  142. because we have to." 
  143.  
  144. There was a light of understanding in his eyes and she knew that he was 
  145. aware of what was between them. And he didn't like it any more than she 
  146. did. But what they wanted didn't matter. 
  147.  
  148. "I can't kill you," Buffy said with a sigh. She reached up and wrapped 
  149. her arms around him. "At least not yet. I want you. I don't want to, but 
  150. I do. But eventually I'm going to work up the nerve to destroy you. I 
  151. *will* destroy you." 
  152.  
  153. "And I'll destroy you," Angelus replied, his voice confident. 
  154.  
  155. Buffy nodded, knowing he was right. It was the only way they could go. 
  156. When their fight was over, both Slayer and Vampire would be gone. 
  157. Another Slayer would come and take her place, another Vampire would lead 
  158. the clan. But Buffy and Angelus would be no longer. They knew it and 
  159. accepted it. 
  160.  
  161. It startled her when his lips came down on hers, rough and demanding. It 
  162. was something she hadn't expected to happen. But she didn't waste time 
  163. being cautious. Pulling him closer to her, she opened up to him, letting 
  164. him inside her mouth, inside her soul. As he deepened the kiss she once 
  165. again felt the shadows that surrounded them. As Slayer and vampire 
  166. kissed, as their mouths melded together, they connected. Good and evil 
  167. disappeared, love and hate evaporated. There were only two people, their 
  168. passion...

  220.     "Here you go, Cordelia," said Buffy handing her a cup of black
  221. coffee before Buffy sat down on the couch beside her.
  222.     "Thank you," said Cordelia taking a sip of the piping hot liquid
  223. and sighing tiredly, hoping the coffee would help her feel less fatigue.
  224.     "S-so Cordelia, I-I thought you were busy training the new
  225. slayer, u-um, Annie, wasn't it?" asked Giles who, with his former Watcher
  226. sense, noted that something was wrong, but everyone was noting this.
  227.     "Annie, um, died a few days ago, Giles," said Cordelia softly
  228. before she took another sip of her coffee.
  229.     "She died?" asked Buffy in surprise and she felt Xander squeeze
  230. her hand in comfort as she continued hesitantly, "How did she die,
  231. Cordelia?"
  232.     "She was challenged," said Cordelia, who wasn't sure if she
  233. should tell Buffy the entire story.
  234.     "By who?" asked Buffy, noticing Cordelia's reserve.
  235.     Cordelia glanced at Buffy momentarily before she glanced at her
  236. steaming cup of coffee and mumbled, "Angelus."
  237.     Buffy stood up with a start, unsure if she had heard correctly,
  238. "What?"
  239.     "Angelus has come back and he killed Amy," said Cordelia looking
  240. up and she saw Buffy's eyes widen.
  241.     "It's my fault!  If only I had killed him when I had killed
  242. Druscilla and Spike!"  Buffy scolded herself aloud as she let go of
  243. Xander's hand.
  244.     "B-Buffy, it's not your fault.  Angelus ran before you could
  245. destroy him," said Giles insisted trying to comfort his former charge.
  246.     "But, Giles, it is my fault," said Buffy softly recalling that
  247. she had made him what he was...evil,  "I made Angel turn to Angelus."
  248.     "You weren't to know the consequences, Buffy," insisted Willow as
  249. she rocked her baby in her arms, hoping that all of this screaming was
  250. not going to wake her noisy child.
  251.     "Will's right, Buffy," said Xander standing up and taking Buffy
  252. into his arms, "You didn't know that that would make him turn to the dark
  253. side.  All you knew was that you loved him and you cared for him and
  254. although that wasn't make it right, it doesn't make it wrong either."
  255.     Buffy sighed as she heard the beating of her husband's heart and
  256. hearing these words for the first time from him; his acceptance of her
  257. past love and wrongs seemed to make things a little bit easier.  "It's
  258. just that he's killed so many and I still can't believe, even after all
  259. these years, that he can't be the Angel I knew."
  260.     "Um, I hate to break up this moment, but there's something you
  261. both should know," said Cordelia glancing at them hesitantly, knowing
  262. that this wasn't exactly the best time to tell them, but they had to know
  263. and they had to be prepared for the worst.
  264.     "What is it, Cordelia?" asked Buffy glancing at the Watcher with
  265. widened eyes, "What is it that you have to tell us?"
  266.     "Since Annie's now, um, dead, a new slayer has been initiated,"
  267. said Cordelia taking another sip of coffee before she placed the cup
  268. down, "You all know that right?"
  269.     "Right, a slayer is initiated when the former slayer dies or the
  270. slayer is allowed to retire," said Xander nodding, "Of course we know
  271. this, we've all been immersed in everything slayer for a long time, not
  272. lately, but it's not something you forget."
  273.     "Get ready to be re-immersed," said Cordelia biting her lower lip
  274. hesitantly.
  275.     They all turned to Cordelia and Xander replied, "What do you mean
  276. Cordelia?"
  277.     "The new slayer...it's Moira..."
  278.
