  28. TITLE: Our Hearts Will Go On 6/6

  32. SUMMARY: A Buffy/Angel story that takes place after "What's My Line 1
  33. & 2" with some added Willow/Oz and Xander/Cordelia. Also, Buffy and
  34. the gang find out 
  35. SPOILERS: All episodes through "What's My Line 1 & 2"
  36. about the return of the Master-in some form.
  37. DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the characters except for "The
  38. Elgradora" All of the other characters belong to Joss Whedon and the
  39. WB. No copywrite infringement intended.
  40. NOTE: I Wrote this after "What's My Line 2," therefor without knowing
  41. that something similar would *sort of* happen in "Surprise"
  42.

  44. PART 6 
  45. SUNDAY NIGHT(THE NEXT DAY)
  46.  
  47.   Buffy walked into her bedroom, slammed the door shut behind her, and
  48. threw herself onto her bed, crying hysterically.
  49.  
  50.   While she was on her way home from Willow's, a vampire, that knew
  51. Angel had left Sunnydale, jumped out at her- and began harassing Buffy
  52. about his leaving.
  53.  
  54. It had gotten to the point where Buffy did not have the mental
  55. capability or strength to fight him, so she just broke down in tears
  56. and ran home, where she now lay crying on her bed.
  57.  
  58. Buffy hugged the leather jacket she held - that Angel had given her
  59. awhile back, close to her.
  60.  
  61. She closed her eyes for a moment, pretending that it was Angel that
  62. she was holding.
  63.  
  64. Reality of course kicked in when she opened her eyes, seconds later.
  65.  
  66. Buffy couldn't take the pain anymore, it was all too much for her.
  67.  
  68. She knew what it was time for. It was time to open it- the goodbye
  69. present that Angel had given her the night before.
  70.  
  71. He told her to wait until she needed to open it- and at that moment
  72. she needed to. She a piece of him with her now. Something new. 
  73.  
  74. Buffy reached over and opened the drawer to the night table next to
  75. her bed. She took out the small velvet jewelry box, that was tucked
  76. neatly inside of it and closed the drawer again.
  77.  
  78. She climbed under her covers, sitting up in bed and set the box down
  79. next to her.
  80.  
  81. She reached back over to her night table and popped a cd that had been
  82. laying out, into her cd player and pressed play.
  83.  
  84. She then settled herself back upright in bed.
  85.  
  86. She picked up the small box again and stared down at it in her hands.
  87. *******
  88.  
  89.    Angel walked into his new apartment, closing the door behind him.
  90.  
  91. He threw his leather jacket on a nearby chair and placed his keys down
  92. on the coffee table.
  93.  
  94. He walked over to his bed and sat down on it. 
  95.  
  96. With his head hung down, he ran his fingers through his hair and sighed.
  97.  
  98. He was thinking of Buffy. How he missed her so much.
  99.  
  100. Angel looked back up and noticed the small pouch bag that Buffy had
  101. given him the night before, lying on the night table next to his bed.
  102.  
  103. He decided that it was time. Time to open it up.
  104.  
  105. Before doing anything, he grabbed the cassette tape that was lying
  106. next to it, that Buffy also had given him, put it in his tape player
  107. and pressed play.
  108.  
  109. He then picked up the small velvet bag, staring down at it in his hands.
  110.  
  111. ******
  112.  
  113. Buffy slowly and carefully opened up the small box- afraid that
  114. something might fall out of it.
  115.  
  116. When she saw what was inside of it, her eyes began to flood with tears
  117. again.
  118.  
  119. ******
  120.  
  121. After a few seconds, Angel finally opened up the bag.
  122.  
  123. Inside was a small cardboard box.
  124.  
  125. Angel took it out of the bag and carefully opened it up.
  126.  
  127. What he saw inside of it brought tears to his eyes.
  128.  
  129. ******
  130.  
  131.    Inside the box that Angel had given Buffy,  was the long chained
  132. gold cross that Angel had always worn.
  133. Underneath it, a small sheet of paper, that Buffy could tell had
  134. something written on it.
  135.  
  136. ******
  137.  
  138.    Inside the box that Buffy had given Angel, was the silver cross
  139. necklace that Angel had given Buffy for protection the first time they
  140. met. The one that was almost always around Buffy's neck. Taped to the
  141. inside lid of the box was a picture of Buffy and underneath the
  142. necklace, a small envelope. 
  143.  
  144. ******
  145.  
  146.     The words to the song that both Buffy and Angel had playing in
  147. their tape players finally came on.
  148.  
  149. - -"Every night in my dreams
  150.   I see you, I feel you
  151.   That is how I know you go on"
  152.  
  153.    Buffy, sitting on her bed with tears in her eyes, began thinking
  154. about all her times with Angel.
  155.  
  156.    Angel, sat on his bed as memories of all his times with Buffy
  157. played through his head.
  158.  
  159.   The beautiful song continued, serving as almost background music to
  160. their thoughts.
  161.  
  162. - -"Far across the distance 
  163.   And spaces between us
  164.   You have come to show you go on"
  165.  
  166. The two thought about the first time they met, outside of the Bronze..
  167.  
  168. *'Is there a problem mam?' Angel asked after Buffy had slammed his
  169. body to the ground. 'There's a problem,' Buffy shot back,'Why are you
  170. following me?' 'I know what you're thinking, but don't worry, I don't
  171. bite' Angel answered her. 'Who are you?' Buffy asked later on. 'Let's
  172. just say, I'm a friend,' Angel told her. 'Yeah, well maybe I don't
  173. want a friend,' Buffy shot at him. 'I didn't say I was yours,' he
  174. answered.*
  175.  
  176. - -"Near, far
  177.  Wherever you are
  178.  I believe that the heart does go on"
  179.  
  180. The two looked down at each other's necklaces that they held in the
  181. boxes in their hands.
  182. ********
  183. A tear fell from Buffy's eyes onto Angel's necklace.
  184.  
  185. Buffy wiped it off quickly, leaving her fingers to rest on the cross.
  186.  
  187. *****
  188.  
  189.  
  190. - -"Once more
  191.  You open the door
  192.  And you're here in my heart
  193.  And my heart will go on and on"
  194.

  197. Angel ran a finger over Buffy's cross.
  198.  
  199. It hurt, burned, a little. But it was nothing compared to the hurt he
  200. was feeling without Buffy in his life.
  201.  
  202. ******
  203.  
  204. - -"Love can touch us one time
  205.  And last for a lifetime
  206.  And never let go till we're gone"
  207.  
  208. They thought about their first kiss, in Buffy's bedroom-when she first
  209. found out he was a vampire.
  210.  
  211. *'I did a lot of thinking today. I really can't be around you because
  212. when I am..' Angel started to tell her.'Hey, no big,' Buffy
  213. interrupted,'Water..over the bridge, under the bridge...' 'All I can
  214. ever think about is how badly I want to kiss you,' Angel admitted.
  215. 'Over the dam...kiss me?' Buffy said looking up at him in shock. 'I'm
  216. older then you and this can't ever...I better go,' he said. 'H-how
  217. much older?' Buffy asked. 'I should..' Angel began. 'Go,' Buffy said
  218. approaching him, 'You said.' Angel looked down at her and they kissed.
  219. They kissed again. Buffy put her arm around him as Angel put his
  220. around her. The kiss went on for several seconds. Suddenly Angel
  221. pulled away. 'What? What is it? What's wrong?' Buffy asked. Angel
  222. turned to face her and growled. Buffy screamed seeing that his face
  223. was then that of a vampire. Angel took one last look at her and jumped
  224. out of her window.*
  225.  
  226. - -"Love was when I loved you
  227.  One true time I hold on to
  228.  In my life we'll always go on"
  229.  
  230. They thought about the time they were in the graveyard and Angel
  231. admitted that he was jealous of Xander.
  232.  
  233. *'Love makes you do the wacky,' Buffy told Angel. 'What?" Angel asked.
  234. 'Crazy stuff,' Buffy explained. 'Oh. Crazy, like a two hundred and
  235. forty one year old being jealous of a high school junior?' Angel asked
  236. referring to himself. 'Are you fessing up?' Buffy asked him. 'I
  237. thought about it. Maybe it bothers me a little,' Angel admitted. 'I
  238. don't love Xander,' Buffy told him. 'Yeah, but he's in your life. He
  239. gets to be there when I can't. Take your classes, eat your meals, hear
  240. your jokes and complaints...He gets to see you in the sunlight,' Angel
  241. reminded her. 'I don't look that good in direct light,' Buffy told
  242. him. Angel looked at her for a moment.'Well, it'll be mourning soon,'
  243. Angel said looking up at the sky. 'I should probably go. I could walk
  244. you home,' Buffy told him. They stared at each other for a long
  245. moment. Finally Angel held out his hand. Buffy took in and they began
  246. to walk hand in hand.*
  247.  
  248. "Near, far
  249.  Wherever you are
  250.  I believe that the heart does go on"
  251.  
  252. The two thought about a time at the Bronze when Buffy wanted to give
  253. Angel his jacket back, but he refused.
  254.  
  255. *'I heard a rumor that there was, uh, one last vampire walking around
  256. making a nuisance of himself,' Angel said coming up behind Buffy at
  257. the Bronze. 'There is. Guess I should thank you for the tip,' Buffy
  258. said. 'Pleasure's mine,' Angel told her. 'Course it would make things
  259. easier if I knew how to get in touch with you,' she told him. 'I'll be
  260. around,' he said. 'Or who you were,' Buffy continued. Angel smiled and
  261. walked around to the other side of her. 'Well, anyways, you can have
  262. your jacket back,' she said referring to the leather jacket he gave
  263. her that she was wearing then. 'It looks better on you,' Angel told
  264. her. He then turned and left. Buffy stared after him. Angel gave her
  265. another look aback then disappeared into the crowd.*
  266.  
  267. - -"Once, more
  268.  You open the door
  269.  And you're here in my heart
  270.  And my heart will go on and on"
  271.  
  272. They thought about the time at the ice skating rink when Angel had his
  273. game face on and didn't want Buffy to see him like that.
  274.  
  275. *'Are you ok?' Angel asked Buffy after she had just fought with a
  276. member of the order of Teraka. Buffy skated over to him. She put a
  277. gloved hand on his face, noticing the cut above his eye. 'What about
  278. you? That cut!' Buffy said moved her hand towards his cut. Angel moved
  279. his head, shrugging her hand off. 'Forget about me. This is bad Buffy.
  280. We gotta get you outta here,' he told her. 'What, you mean hide?' she
  281. asked. 'Let's just get you some place safe!' he answered her. 'No!
  282. Your eye!' Buffy said reaching back up to touch his cut. He shook her
  283. off again. 'Hey, don't be a baby. I'm not gonna hurt you,' she told
  284. him. 'It's not that,' Angel said. 'What?' Buffy asked. 'You shouldn't
  285. have to touch me when I'm like this,' he told her. Buffy looked up
  286. into his vampire features. 'Oh,' she said. She removed the glove from
  287. her hand and moved her hand across his brow and wound, brushing gently
  288. down his cheek. 'I didn't even notice,' she told him softly. She moved
  289. closer to him and kissed him. Angel responds, and the kiss becomes
  290. more passionate.*
  291.  
  292. Angel and Buffy's thoughts subsided as they looked back down at the
  293. small boxes they held in their hands.
  294.  
  295. *******
  296.  
  297.  
  298. Angel ran his hand over the picture of Buffy that was taped to the
  299. box. Tears were pouring from his eyes as he looked at her beautiful
  300. face.
  301.  
  302. Looking at Buffy's picture and having her silver cross with him, made
  303. him feel as though a part of Buffy was still with him. 
  304.  
  305. Angel slipped his hand under the necklace and pulled out the small
  306. envelope that was underneath it.
  307.  
  308. He opened it up and took out the piece of paper that was folded neatly
  309. inside of it.
  310.  
  311. He unfolded it and read what it said.
  312.  
  313. *********
  314.  
  315. Buffy picked up Angel's necklace and held it in her hands.
  316.  
  317. She carefully brought it over her head and around her neck.
  318.  
  319. She then up the cross part again and brought it to her lips. Gently,
  320. she kissed it, then let it go again, allowing it hang around her neck. 
  321.  
  322. With it around her neck, it made her feel as though a pice of him was
  323. with her.
  324.  
  325. Buffy then reached back into the small velvet box and took out the
  326. piece of paper that was folded inside it.
  327.  
  328. She unfolded it and read what was written in it.
  329.  
  330. - -"You're here
  331.  There's nothing I fear
  332.  And I know that my heart will go on"
  333.  
  334. *******
  335.  
  336.    Written on the sheet of paper that was inside the envelope that
  337. Angel found inn the box Buffy had given him was the following:
  338.  
  339. Dear Angel,
  340.  
  341. My heart for you will go on.
  342.  
  343. Yours truly,
  344. Buffy
  345.  
  346. Angel stared down at those words as even more tears flooded his eyes.
  347.  
  348. ******
  349.     Buffy's eyes flooded with tears as she read the words written on
  350. the piece of paper Angel included in the box he had given her.
  351.  
  352. The note read:
  353.  
  354. My heart for you Buffy, will go on forever.
  355.  
  356. Love,
  357. Angel
  358.  
  359. ******
  360. Tears in their eyes,the two of them listened as the last verse of the
  361. song played over both their tape players, staring down at the notes
  362. they held in their hands.
  363.  
  364. - -"We'll stay
  365.  Forever this way
  366.  You are safe in my heart
  367.  And my heart will go on and on"
  368.  
  369. ******
  370.  
  371. Buffy wiped some tears from her eyes as the song ended.
  372.  
  373. She placed the velvet box  and note she held on the table beside her
  374. bed.
  375.  
  376. She then nestled under her covers.
  377.

  379.  
  380.  Angel wiped some of the tears from his eyes as the song ended and
  381. placed the small cardboard box with Buffy's necklace and note in it on
  382. his night table. He positioned it so that her picture would be facing
  383. him when he lay in bed.
  384.  
  385. He then got into bed and pulled the covers over him.
  386.  
  387. ******
  388.  
  389. Before closing her eyes Buffy brought the cross part of Angel's
  390. necklace that she still wore around her neck- up to her lips again.
  391. She kissed it again.
  392.  
  393. "I love you, Angel," she whispered, then let go of it again and went
  394. to sleep.
  395.  
  396. ******
  397.  
  398.   Before closing his eyes, Angel reached over to the box that lay on
  399. his night table. He touched Buffy's silver cross, letting his fingers
  400. rest on it, despite the pain he felt.
  401.  
  402. "I love you, Buffy," he whispered then took his hand away again and
  403. went to sleep.
  404.  
  405. ******
  406.  
  407.  In the darkness of the two rooms, two crosses sparkled. One gold. One
  408. silver.
  409.  
  410. It was a sign. A sign, that Buffy and Angel's love, their heart, for
  411. each other would go on forever. And although they were no longer
  412. physically together, in their hearts, in their dreams, they would
  413. always be.
  414.  
  415. All of a sudden the song came on again in both of the rooms as Buffy
  416. and Angel slept, dreaming of each other. Neither of them had turned it
  417. back on..they were both asleep. Maybe it was another sign. It must've
  418. been.
  419.

  540. THE NEXT DAY(SATURDAY)
  541. BUFFY'S HOUSE
  542.  
  543.  The door bell rang at the Summers' house and Buffy went to answer it
  544. since no one else was home.
  545.  
  546. "Hi, Buffy," Willow greeted her at the door.
  547.  
  548. "Hey, Will," Buffy answered. "Come on in."
  549.  
  550. Willow walked in and Buffy shut the door behind her.
  551.  
  552. "How are you feeling?" Willow asked her friend.
  553.  
  554. Buffy seemed like she was in a daze. "No, Angel hasn't left yet," she
  555. answered her friend.
  556.  
  557. "Uh, Buffy, are you alright?" Willow asked concerned.
  558.  
  559. "Fine! Everything's fine! I'm fine, my mom's fine. I'm sure your
  560. fine..you are fine, right?"
  561.  
  562. Willow nodded. "Yeah, but I don't think you are."
  563.  
  564. "Don't be silly. I'm fine..great..wonderful. Nothing could be better,"
  565. Buffy told her.
  566.  
  567. "Are you sure about that Buffy," Willow asked.
  568.  
  569. Buffy nodded. "Yeah! Why?"
  570.  
  571. "Well, you're acting kind of strange. And when I asked you a minute
  572. ago how you were you told me that Angel hasn't left yet..That wasn't
  573. the question I asked," Willow told her.
  574.  
  575. Buffy sighed. "I'm sorry..Guess I just have some- things on my mind,"
  576. she explained.
  577.  
  578. "Like, Angel leaving?" Willow asked.
  579.  
  580. Buffy nodded. "Like  Angel leaving," she repeated in an answer.
  581.  
  582. "Look, I know this must be hard for you," Willow started, attempting
  583. to comfort her friend.
  584.  
  585. Buffy looked at Willow, as if Willow really didn't know how hard it was.
  586.  
  587. Willow sighed. "Ok, maybe I don't really know. I'm just trying to make
  588. you feel better- if that's possible," she said.
  589.  
  590. Buffy sighed. "Look, I appreciate your help, I do. But, I really don't
  591. think that anything can help. I mean, Angel's leaving. There's nothing
  592. that can stop that from happening."
  593.  
  594. Willow stared at Buffy. She knew that Buffy was right- There was
  595. nothing that could make Buffy feel any better- There was nothing that
  596. could prevent Angel from leaving.
  597.  
  598. Buffy sat on her couch, looking in the other direction.
  599.  
  600. Willow sat next to her.
  601.  
  602. Tears were forming in Buffy's eyes. "It's just so hard...It's so
  603. hard..The only thing that makes sense to me is gone," she said.
  604.  
  605. "He hasn't left yet, Buffy. You could still go see him now," Willow
  606. said softly.
  607.  
  608.  
  609. Buffy shook her head. "I can't. We said goodbye already..last night.
  610. We, well it wasn't exactly goodbye..I kinda just left and said bye,"
  611. Buffy told her.
  612.  
  613. "What happened? I mean, I expected you guys to go through that whole
  614. mushy goodbye thing," Willow said.
  615.  
  616. "Definitely no mushy goodbye...He just told me that I had to go get
  617. help with the vampire bite and I said ok and just kinda said see you
  618. to him and walked out the door" she told Willow. "And I can't go back
  619. there to see him, it'll just make it harder for us both. I think that
  620. despite my feeling awful about ending like that, maybe there's still
  621. the chance that it'll work out easier," Buffy explained.
  622.  
  623. "Well, is it working so far? Do you think it's easier?" Willow asker
  624. her.
  625.  
  626. "No, I think I may have made it harder. I'll probably never forgive
  627. myself for not saying goodbye the right way, but, I guess I'll just
  628. have to give it time.," Buffy answered.
  629.  
  630. There was a knock at the door.
  631.  
  632. "Oh, I'll get it," Willow told her, getting up. "It's probably just
  633. Oz. He's been waiting out in his van for me," she said.
  634.  
  635. "Oz?" Buffy asked.
  636.  
  637. "Yeah..we're going on our first date tonight" Willow said.
  638.  
  639. "Oh. Where to?" Buffy asked.
  640.  
  641. "The Bronze," Willow answered.
  642.  
  643. "The Bronze? That sounds romantic and quite..have fun," Buffy said
  644. sarcastically.
  645.  
  646. Willow opened the door. "Hey, Oz. Come on in," she said motioning
  647. inside.
  648.  
  649. "Shouldn't we get going?" he asked as she closed the door behind him.
  650.  
  651. "Uh, yeah. Hey, Buffy- Do you wanna- come?" she asked her friend.
  652. "Xander's gonna be there too..uh, with Cordelia, but still there."
  653.  
  654. "Nah. I think I'll stay in tonight. Besides, you two are going on a
  655. date, I don't wanna impose or anything," Buffy said.
  656.  
  657. "Oh, no. You won't be imposing. We want you to come..Don't we Oz?"  
  658.  
  659. "Sure. It'll kinda break that first date tension having someone else
  660. around," Oz answered with a grin.
  661.  
  662. "I don't know..I won't be much for company," she said.

  664. "Sure you will Buffy. You always are," Willow said.

  666. "Well, Angel has never left town for good before," Buffy reminded her.

  668. "Oh...yeah. But, I mean it's Saturday night. What else are you going
  669. to do besides stay home and wish Angel wasn't leaving," Willow pointed
  670. out.
  671.  
  672. Buffy thought for a minute. "Ok..I'll come. I- just have to get
  673. something upstairs. I'll be down in a few minutes. You guys can wait
  674. outside," she said.
  675.  
  676. "Ok..great," Willow said smiling.
  677.  
  678. Buffy smiled back and ran upstairs.
  679.  
  680. ********
  681. GILE'S HOUSE
  682.  
  683.   Gile's was reading one of the Watcher diaries when he heard a knock
  684. on his door. He got up to answer it.
  685.  
  686. He was surprised at who stood in front of it. "Oh..he..hello,
  687. Angel....Uh, why don't you come in?" he said, motioning him to come
  688. inside.
  689.  
  690. Angel nodded. "Thanks." 
  691.  
  692. "Have a seat," Giles said pointing over to the couch.
  693.  
  694. Angel nodded and sat down.
  695.  
  696. "So..What brings you here?" Giles asked concerned.
  697.  
  698. "The book on the Elgradora..I was able to get it for you. I thought-
  699. you'd be at the school library but you weren't..so I cam here to give
  700. it to you," Angel explained. He held out the book in his hands, giving
  701. it to Giles.
  702.  
  703. Giles took it and looked down at it for a moment. He then began
  704. flipping through the pages.
  705.  
  706. "It's somewhere in the fourth chapter," Angel told him.
  707.  
  708. Giles flipped to Chapter four and scanned it for information.
  709. "Oh..yes, here it is..Well, Thank you very much. This will indeed be
  710. helpful in protecting Buffy-and- us all. Thank you," he said.
  711.  
  712. "No problem," Angel said. His face saddened at the thought that he
  713. wouldn't be there anymore to protect Buffy as he always did before.
  714.  
  715. "Is...she alright?" Angel asked suddenly.
  716.  
  717. "Who? Buffy?" Giles asked.
  718.  
  719. "Yeah. She was bitten by a vampire last night and I told her to go see
  720. you. Is she alright?" Angel asked, concerned.
  721.  
  722. "Yes. Sh-she's fine," Giles assured him.
  723.  
  724. There was a long silence.
  725.  
  726. "Buffy-told me that you're leaving Sunnydale," Giles said, trying to
  727. make conversation.
  728.  
  729. "I am..I'm leaving tonight," he told Giles.
  730.  
  731. "Yes-I know. Buffy-is- very upset. She's going to miss you quite a
  732. bit, I suppose,"Giles told him.
  733.  
  734. Angel nodded. "I know..I'm going to miss her too," he said in a sad
  735. tone. "When I got my soul back, I never thought that I'd be able to
  736. love anyone again. I thought..no human could ever love me because I'm
  737. not human and no vampire could ever love me and I could never love
  738. them because I'm not like them anymore..But then I met Buffy..and I
  739. fell in love with her..She- fell in love with me. And I was the
  740. happiest I'd ever been in all my life..because I felt-almost human
  741. again..I felt loved. There was still loneliness, still pain..but there
  742. was love..the greatest thing that could ever happen to me..and Buffy
  743. gave it to me. And now- it's all being taken away. I have to leave..."

  746. "I'm terribly sorry that things can't work out for the two of you,
  747. Angel. And- I mean that. I know, I've said in the past that a vampire
  748. and a slayer could never belong together. But when I saw the
  749. extraordinary love that you have for Buffy and the extraordinary love
  750. that Buffy has for you...Well, I realized that you two were meant to
  751. be together" Giles told him.
  752.  
  753. There was a short silence.
  754.  
  755. "I should- probably thank you, as Buffy's watcher, for allowing us to
  756. be together," Angel said.
  757.  
  758. "Well, as I said, I recognized that nothing could keep true lovers
  759. apart, and you two- are, in a sense, true lovers. I wasn't about to
  760. attempt to tear that apart," Giles explained.
  761.  
  762. "But this does," Angel said, a sad tone in his voice.
  763.  
  764. "Well, yes, I suppose it will.. But- even while the two of you are
  765. apart, I know- that you're love for each other will remain..perhaps
  766. forever" Giles said.
  767.  
  768. "Angel," Giles began, curious,"Have you told Buffy what you just told
  769. me- about how you never thought you could love anyone until you met
  770. her?" he asked.
  771.  
  772. "I've told her..many times," Angel told him.
  773.  
  774. "Well did you tell her last night- before the two of you said
  775. goodbye?" Giles continued.
  776.  
  777. Angel shook his head. "I didn't..I didn't get the chance to say
  778. goodbye to her. She was gone before I could say anything," Angel
  779. explained. He paused for a second. "Do you..think- you could tell her
  780. that I said goodbye..and..that- I love her?" he asked.
  781.  
  782. Giles nodded. "I could..But- I know Buffy very well, and I know that
  783. she'd much rather hear you say that to her then, well me, of course,"
  784. Giles told him.
  785.  
  786. Angel shook his head. "Buffy said goodbye already. She doesn't want to
  787. see me again. It'll be to hard for her."
  788.  
  789. "I'm afraid that Buffy is trying to talk herself into not seeing you
  790. again. She's afraid..of how she'll act when she sees you leaving her.
  791. But, I think what will be harder for her, is when she realizes that
  792. she should've said goodbye to you- the right way. And then it'll be
  793. too late," Giles said. He paused. "But, I'll tell her for you if
  794. that's what you'd like."
  795.  
  796. Angel just stared at him. "I better go," he said after a few
  797. seconds,"My train leaves soon."
  798.  
  799. He stood up and walked towards the door.
  800.  
  801. "Very well," Giles said, following him and opening the door for him.
  802.  
  803. "Goodbye," Angel said looking at Giles.
  804.  
  805. "Goodbye, Angel," Giles replied.
  806.  
  807. Angel turned and walked out the door.
  808.  
  809. "Angel," Giles called as he watched Angel walk out into the street.
  810.  
  811. Angel turned around.
  812.  
  813. "You've..been of much help to- us all..over the course of the years
  814. we've known you..very much help. And I..thank you for that," Giles said.
  815.  
  816. Angel nodded and turned back around and walked away.
  817.  
  818. Giles watched him walk away. "Poor Buffy," he thought. "I hope he
  819. makes the right descision."
  820.  
  821. ******
  822. THE BRONZE
  823.  
  824. While Willow and Oz were dancing, Willow looked over into a dark
  825. corner of the Bronze and spotted someone standing alone in the shadows.
  826.  
  827. "Hey, Oz. Can you excuse me for a few minutes? I have to go to the DJ
  828. stand to- request a song," Willow told Oz.
  829.  
  830. "Oh, sure. I'll just wait here for you," Oz said.
  831.  
  832. "Ok, I'll be back in a little while," Willow said, then turned and
  833. walked over to where Xander and Cordelia were making out.
  834.  
  835.  
  836. Willow tapped Xander on the shoulder. "Uh, excuse me, Xander- There's
  837. something we need to go do," she told him.
  838.  
  839. "Yeah, there is. *You* need to go back on the dance floor and dance
  840. with Oz, and *I* need to continue making out with Cordelia," Xander
  841. answered.
  842.  
  843. "I'm sorry- I- interrupted your little..thing, but- this is more
  844. important," Willow explained.
  845.  
  846. "Right now, nothing could be more important then Cordelia's lips
  847. against my lips- or maybe other body parts," Xander told her.
  848.  
  849. Cordelia and Xander started kissing again.
  850.  
  851. "But..it's about Buffy!" Willow told him.
  852.  
  853. Xander broke away from Cordelia. "Well, maybe that."
  854.  
  855. He looked at Cordelia. "Cordy, don't move. I'll be right back..My
  856. lips'll miss you- yours," he told her.
  857.  
  858. "Ew! You're leaving me for her! Listen, Xander, If you think you've
  859. got me wrapped around your fingers, you're wrong! Ok, cause there's
  860. plenty of guys that are dying to go out with me- and some that I'd
  861. much rather go out with- and a few of them are here right now, So if
  862. I-" Cordelia began shouting at him.
  863.  
  864. Xander grabbed the back of her head and passionately kissed her.
  865.  
  866. "You better hurry up. Wouldn't want one of those stupid single losers
  867. to think I'm not with anyone," Cordelia said, changing her mind.
  868.  
  869. Xander turned to a surprised Willow. "These babies are magical," he
  870. said pointing to his lips.
  871.  
  872. Willow managed to smile slightly.
  873.  
  874. "So, what's this we have to do for Buffy?" Xander asked following
  875. Willow.
  876.  
  877. "Just follow my lead," Willow told him as they headed towards the DJ
  878. stand.
  879.  
  880. Willow whispered a request of a song in the DJ's ear, who agreed to
  881. play it.
  882.  
  883. "Will, you mind letting me in on the big secret?" Xander asked.
  884.  
  885. Willow nodded. "Well, remember the night.." Willow started and
  886. proceeded to tell Xander her plan.
  887.  
  888. Xander looked over at a dark figure in the corner of the Bronze, then
  889. looked at a lonely Buffy.
  890.  
  891. "For Buffy's sake, I hope this works," Xander said.
  892.  
  893. Willow nodded. "Me too.. Come on. let's go," she said.
  894.  
  895. The two of them walked over to where Buffy sat.
  896.  
  897. "Hi," Willow said to Buffy.
  898.  
  899. Buffy looked up at the two of them. "Oh, hey guys," she answered.
  900.  
  901. There was a long silence as Willow waited for the right moment to
  902. begin talking again.
  903.  
  904. Finally, a new song began playing- the one that Willow had requested.
  905.  
  906. Willow was relieved- her plan was working so far.
  907.  
  908. The words to the song came on.
  909.  
  910. *It's daybreak
  911.  And you are asleep
  912.  I can hear you breathe now
  913.  Your breath is deep*
  914.  
  915. "So, no word from Angel?" Willow asked Buffy, on cue.
  916.  
  917. Buffy looked at Willow, confused. "What are you talking about, Will?
  918. Angel and I said goodbye already- last night- maybe it wasn't the best
  919. goodbye, but it was goodbye..I thought I told you," she said.
  920.  
  921. Willow just ignored Buffy's question and comments. It did seem a
  922. little awkward saying this to her but it was part of her plan.
  923.  
  924. Willow waited a few seconds, then continued. "Well, in a way he sort
  925. of is, in the way of that he's right over there," she said motioning
  926. to a dark figure in a corner of the Bronze.
  927.  
  928. Buffy, looked at Willow, then at Xander, still quite confused. She
  929. then looked over at the figure Willow had pointed out.
  930.  
  931. The person was looking in her direction.
  932.  
  933. It was Angel.
  934.  
  935. Buffy then realized that the things that Willow had just said to
  936. her-that weren't making a bit of sense- were the things that Willow
  937. said to her the night that Buffy and Angel said their first goodbye to
  938. each other, in a way.
  939.  
  940. Buffy played their conversation from that night back in her head. 
  941. *"So, no word from Angel?" Willow had asked Buffy. "Nah. It's weird,
  942. though. In this way, I feel like he's still watching me," Buffy told
  943. her. "Well, in a way he sort of is," Willow said, "In the way of that
  944. he's right over there," Willow said pointing to a dark figure that was
  945. staring in Buffy's direction..Angel.*
  946.  
  947. Even the song that was playing right then- "I'll Remember You," by
  948. Sophie Zelmani- that was the same song that was playing that night
  949. too- Although, Willow had set it up that way.
  950.  
  951. *But before I go
  952.  I look at you one last time
  953.  I can heat a heartbeat
  954.  Is it yours or is it mine?*
  955.  
  956. Buffy looked back at her two best friends.
  957.  
  958. Xander motioned his head in Angel's direction, signaling her to go
  959. over to him.
  960.  
  961. Buffy looked over at Willow, then back at Xander. She was hesitant
  962. about going over to him, afraid that it would be too hard to say
  963. goodbye. But then she gave her friends a smile, a silent thank you and
  964. turned and began slowly approaching Angel.
  965.  
  966. Xander turned to Willow.
  967.  
  968. Willow had a grin on her face as she watched Buffy and Angel approach
  969. each other. She was happy that her planned had worked out- bringing
  970. Buffy and Angel together to say goodbye that way they should have the
  971. night before. She knew it would make Buffy happier- although maybe
  972. just the slightest bit.
  973.  
  974. "So, guess this is my cue to say ,'I don't need to watch because I'm
  975. not threatened. I'm just gonna look this way,'" Xander said grinning.
  976.  
  977. Willow smiled.
  978.  
  979. The two of them watched as Buffy and Angel approached each other.
  980.  
  981. When they met, towards the center of the Bronze, Buffy looked up at
  982. Angel, greeting him with a smile.
  983.  
  984. Angel just stared down at her, a sad look on his face.
  985.  
  986. *I look at your lips
  987.  I know how soft they can be
  988.  Did they know what they wanted
  989.  the times they kissed me?"
  990.  
  991. Angel finally spoke. "I couldn't leave here without saying a proper
  992. goodbye to you," he told Buffy.
  993.  
  994. Buffy just looked up at him and nodded slightly.
  995.  
  996. Angel sighed. "I need to know that you're going to be alright...I
  997. know, that it's going to take awhile, but I need to know that, in
  998. time...you'll move on..find someone else to love... Someone you can
  999. start a family with..someone you can grow old, and die with," Angel
  1000. told her. He continued. "Someone you can watch the sunset with, before
  1001. you go to bed at night..and- watch it rise with when you walk up in
  1002. the morning...'Cause you deserve that, Buffy..you do. And I- need you
  1003. to promise that you'll do that,Buffy...for me."
  1004.  
  1005. Buffy's eyes held unshed tears as she stared up at him. She shook her
  1006. head slightly. "I don't know if I can do that, Angel..I can't-just-
  1007. forget you and move on. You're too much a part of me. I'm sorry, but-
  1008. I can't make that promise," she told him.
  1009.  
  1010. "Look, I know it all seems too hard right now- but I need to know that
  1011. you'll try, at least," he said. "Do that for me, Buffy?" he asked.
  1012.  
  1013. Buffy looked at him for a few seconds, then nodded. "I will..try, I
  1014. mean."
  1015.  
  1016. Angel gave her a slight smile. He felt slightly better knowing that
  1017. she'd one day be happy again.
  1018.  
  1019. "I have something for you," Angel told her, reaching into his pocket.
  1020. "It's not much, really- but it's, a goodbye present." He held a velvet
  1021. jewelry box in his hands.
  1022.  
  1023. Buffy looked down at it in his hands.
  1024.  
  1025. *And your hands
  1026.  that I held in mine
  1027.  Now they're reposing on the pillow
  1028.  Will they ever miss me some time?*
  1029.  
  1030. She looked up at Angel. 
  1031.  
  1032. Finally, he handed her the box. "Don't open it, just now," Angel told
  1033. her. "Wait- until I'm gone..When you really need to- when the pain is
  1034. too much- open it then," he told her.
  1035.  
  1036. Buffy nodded. "I, um, actually, have something for you, too. I was-
  1037. gonna leave it by your door but- well, you're here now," she said.
  1038.  
  1039. Buffy reached into her pocket and pulled out a small velvet pouch bag
  1040. and handed it to him. "There's just a little something in there to
  1041. remember me by..in case you forget," she told him.
  1042.  
  1043. Angel shook his head. "I won't ever forget you, Buffy..I won't," he
  1044. swore to her.
  1045.  
  1046. Buffy knew that he meant it. She'd never forget him either. Ever. He'd
  1047. always be in her heart, just as she'd always be in his.
  1048.  
  1049. *I'll remember you
  1050.  You will be there in my heart
  1051.  I'll remember you
  1052.  And that is all that I can do
  1053.  But I'll remember*
  1054.  
  1055. Buffy remembered that she had something else for him. 
  1056.  
  1057. She reached in her pocket and pulled out a cassette tape. "This is for
  1058. you, too. It's- a tape of this song-that- kinda reflects the way I
  1059. feel bout you leaving..You can- play it while you open the bag-or,
  1060. whenever. I know I don't know your musical taste but- I just had to
  1061. give it you. The song just- seems like it was written for us," Buffy
  1062. told him.
  1063.  
  1064. Angel nodded and placed the two items in his pocket.
  1065.  
  1066. He looked back down at Buffy.
  1067.  
  1068. They stared at each other for a few seconds.
  1069.  
  1070. Buffy could tell that Angel had something on his mind. She knew it was
  1071. probably the fact that he was leaving and they'd no longer be
  1072. together, but she had to ask anyway.
  1073.  
  1074. "Is there- something else on your mind?" she asked him softly.
  1075.  
  1076. "It's nothing- It's just *this*... It's just so-," Angel began.
  1077.  
  1078. Buffy knew what he was going to say. "Painful," she said, finishing
  1079. his sentence for him. "I know."
  1080.  
  1081. "I wish things could be different, Buffy," he told her.
  1082.  
  1083. Buffy nodded. "I know," she agreed. "Me too."
  1084.  
  1085. Buffy shrugged slightly. "Well, it's getting kind of late. You should
  1086. probably go now, or- you'll miss your train," she told him. As much as
  1087. Buffy hated having to say that, it was the truth.
  1088.  
  1089. Angel nodded. "I know," he whispered.
  1090.  
  1091. Buffy stared up at him.
  1092.  
  1093. Angel leaned down towards her face slightly.
  1094.  
  1095. Buffy just stared into his eyes.
  1096.  
  1097. He leaned forward a few more inches until his lips met hers for a soft
  1098. kiss.
  1099.  
  1100. The power between the two of them brought their lips together again,
  1101. as they kissed again.
  1102.  
  1103. Buffy closed her eyes, wrapped up in the moment, as Angel did the same.
  1104.  
  1105. *Your eyes
  1106.  that always make me shiver
  1107.  Now they are closed
  1108.  They just sometimes twitch a little*
  1109.  
  1110. As Angel's arms wrapped tightly around her, Buffy moved her hand to
  1111. Angel's face and brought her other arm around his neck, deepening
  1112. their kiss.
  1113.  
  1114. As they shared this passionate kiss goodbye, Buffy was reminded of the
  1115. first time they kissed goodbye- when they first decided that they
  1116. shouldn't be together.
  1117.  
  1118. Their conversation just a minute ago was even similar to the one they
  1119. had that night.
  1120. *"I just wanted to see if you were ok, and your mother," Angel said
  1121. when they finally reached each other. "We're both good..you?" Buffy
  1122. asked. "If I can go a little while without being shot or stabbed, I'll
  1123. be alright," he answered with a slight chuckle. He became more
  1124. serious. "Look, this can't.." he started. "Ever-be anything" Buffy
  1125. finished, "I know. For one thing your like two hundred and twenty four
  1126. years older then I am," she said with a smile. "I just gotta..I gotta
  1127. walked away from this," Angel told her. Buffy nodded. "I know, me
  1128. too....One of us has to go here," she said. Angel nodded slightly. "I
  1129. know," he said in a whisper, then leaned in and kissed her.*
  1130.  
  1131. Their kiss was even during the same song-although, again, Willow had
  1132. arranged that.
  1133.  
  1134. But Buffy knew that this would be their last kiss goodbye. And unlike
  1135. the previous time, this one was goodbye forever.
  1136.  
  1137. Buffy held on tighter to Angel as they kissed, not wanting to ever let
  1138. go. Savoring the feel of his body close to hers for the last time.
  1139.  
  1140. *And your body
  1141.  I could hold for an hour
  1142.  It sent me to heaven
  1143.  With it's heat and power*
  1144.  
  1145. Slowly, Buffy and Angel pulled apart, looking deeply into each other's
  1146. eyes as they did so.
  1147.  
  1148. Tears were in both of their eyes.
  1149.  
  1150. As soon as Angel saw Buffy's face filled with tears, he pulled her
  1151. back into his embrace, wrapping his arms tightly around her tiny body,
  1152. hugging her close to him.
  1153.  
  1154. Angel stroked the back of her hair as he held her.
  1155.  
  1156. After a few seconds, they pulled away again.
  1157.  
  1158. "I have to go now," Angel told Buffy softly.
  1159.  
  1160. "Ok," she said trying not to make it any harder for them. She tried to
  1161. hold back the tears from pouring down her face again, but one had
  1162. already slipped out of her eye. Then another, then another.
  1163.  
  1164. Angel moved his hand to her cheeks and wiped some of the tears from
  1165. her eyes.
  1166.  
  1167. Buffy grabbed his hand and held it against her cheek. She closed her
  1168. eyes a she took in the feel of his touch for the last time. Then she
  1169. guided his hand down to her lips and kissed the back of it.
  1170.  
  1171. Angel closed his own eyes as she did this.
  1172.  
  1173. Slowly, Buffy moved his hand down to rest beneath her chin.
  1174.  
  1175. Tears were forming in Angel's eyes again.
  1176. He was wishing more then ever that he wasn't a vampire- so that none
  1177. of this would have to happen. So that he wouldn't have to leave the
  1178. girl that he loved more then anything in the world.
  1179.  
  1180. "Please don't go, Angel. Please. I can't do this without you..I can't-
  1181. live without you, Angel. Please don't leave me," Buffy pleaded with
  1182. him as tears ran down her pale cheeks. She knew that she was being
  1183. unfair to him saying this, but she couldn't help but say how she felt
  1184. at that moment.
  1185.  
  1186. Angel's eyes flooded with tears. He would have done anything for
  1187. Buffy. Anything, He'd give the world to her- if she asked for it. But
  1188. staying in Sunnydale was one thing he could not d o for her. He would
  1189. not put her in danger of Spike's attempts at using him to restore
  1190. Druscilla or trying to make him a normal vampire again.
  1191.  
  1192. Angel placed his gentle hand back to rest on the side of Buffy's face.
  1193. He caressed her cheek lightly.
  1194.  
  1195. Tears continued to roll down both of their cheeks.
  1196.  
  1197. "Buffy, when I got my soul back, I never once thought that I'd be able
  1198. to love again or that anyone could ever love me..But..when I met you,
  1199. things changed..I fell in love with you, you were able to fall in love
  1200. with me. And I- was the happiest I'd ever been in all my life-because
  1201. you made me feel complete- you made me feel, almost- human..because
  1202. you made me feel loved. Of course, there was still loneliness, still
  1203. pain, but there was love too- The love I had for you and the love you
  1204. had for me. And it was the greatest thing that could ever happen to
  1205. me-you gave me the greatest thing the greatest gift off all..your
  1206. love, your heart. And I thank you for that, Buffy. I'd love to give
  1207. something more then just my love-and my heart for you- in return, but
  1208. staying here..I can't do. You know that, Buffy..You know that if it
  1209. were in any way possible to stay here with you, I would..But I can't,
  1210. with this," Angel told her.
  1211.  
  1212. He continued. "You mean the world to me Buffy. And I'll never stop
  1213. missing you, never stop loving you..Your eyes, your hair, your lips,
  1214. your warmth,  your smile, your touch..I'll never stop," he told her.
  1215.  
  1216. Buffy stared at him with tears rolling down her cheeks.
  1217.  
  1218. Angel pulled her close to him again, giving her one last, soft kiss on
  1219. her lips. It didn't last as long as the previous one, but it was still
  1220. magical.
  1221.  
  1222. Angel pulled away from her slowly. He looked at her for a few more
  1223. seconds.
  1224.  
  1225. "Goodbye, Buffy," he said, softly.
  1226.  
  1227. Buffy tried to say something but words couldn't escape her mouth, only
  1228. sobs. She just stood there looking at him with tears pouring out of
  1229. her eyes.
  1230.  
  1231. Angel looked at her for one more moment, then turned and headed
  1232. towards the exit of the Bronze.
  1233.  
  1234. Buffy watched him walk away from her.
  1235.  
  1236. "Angel..don't go," Buffy whispered, mainly to herself, in tears.
  1237.  
  1238. Angel passed where Willow and Xander were standing.
  1239.  
  1240. They, too, watched as he headed towards the door.
  1241.  
  1242. Xander shook his head in disgust, then turned towards Willow. "He
  1243. walks right past us, knowing that he'll never again see our faces, and
  1244. he doesn't even say goodbye?!? The nerve of some vampires!" he said.
  1245.  
  1246. Willow shrugged. "He said goodbye to me...He- came by my house the
  1247. other night- and- said goodbye," Willow told him.
  1248.  
  1249. Xander shook his head again.
  1250.  
  1251. Just before reaching the door, Angel paused. He turned to look back at
  1252. Buffy one last time. He'd never see her beautiful face again.
  1253.  
  1254. "I love you," he whispered to her, then turned and walked out of the
  1255. bronze.
  1256.  
  1257. Buffy wiped some of the tears from her eyes, only to have more pour
  1258. from them again.
  1259.
