  48. There is a prequel to this story in the works, which will cover all the
  49. loose ends and nagging questions, including the Mokoi. (Read on!)  This
  50. one takes place in alternate Buffy-universe, where Angel never reverted
  51. to Angelus, but other equally nasty things have happened.  How fast the

  127. Author's note:  This idea came to me long when Buffy first began.  
  128. Needless to say, I was very angry at Joss when the Angel episode aired.  
  129. But I got over that and since then the idea has... evolved.  Also.  I 
  130. have not finished this yet.  But posting the first part means that I 
  131. have to hurry up and finish it.
  132.  
  133.             INNER DEMONS
  134.  
  135.     The night was clear.  The stars shone in the sky and the waxing crecent 
  136. moon grinned down like a cheshire cat.  An eriee silence hung around the 
  137. town of Sunnydale.  A silence broken only by the faint sounds of flesh 
  138. hitting flesh.
  139.     In a dark ally, a lone girl was set upon two vampires.  Their battle 
  140. raged on for several minutes before she was able to overpower them.  But 
  141. no sooner had she finished off the first two when two more threw her 
  142. into a wall.  Recovering almost not quickly enough, she watched one move 
  143. in for the kill.  But it didn't matter.  Stake in hand, she was ready 
  144. for him.
  145.     When suddenly, the vampire stopped and looked down at an arrow that was 
  146. jutting from his chest.  It was the last thing he saw before vanishing 
  147. into dust.  The girl and the remaining vampire stopped, startled by this 
  148. oddity.  Where had that come from?
  149.     However, the moment's hesitation was all it took for a second arrow to 
  150. find the creatures heart and reduce it to dust as well.  Still puzzled, 
  151. the girl followed the arrow's path back to a low wall.  There, the 
  152. figure of a pale man with long dark hair stood.  He was dressed in black 
  153. and held a longbow at his side.
  154.     The two stared at each other in silence for a time.  Until a noise 
  155. caused the girl to look away for an instant.  But, in that instant, he 
  156. was gone ans she was left confused and alone in the ally way.
  157.     "Thank you!" she finally called out, and left the battlefield.
  158.  
  159.                                        *   *   *   *   *
  160.     Alone in the night he walked.  The lone predator moving through the 
  161. urban jungle.  But he wasn't hunting this night.  Well... not yet 
  162. anyway.  The night was still young.
  163.     Tonight he was just out thinking.  Something wasn't right.  Their 
  164. numbers were decreasing faster than normal.  Not that they still didn't 
  165. have enough among their ranks to do some real damage.  But there was 
  166. something weird about the recent decline.
  167.     He could blame *her*, but even she couldn't slay as many as had been 
  168. killed in the last few days.  No.  Someone was helping her.  But who?  
  169. Not the others.  He wasn't underestimating them, he knew better, he just 
  170. knew that they weren't involved in this.
  171.     No this was someone else.  "Damn," he swore.  Who was helping her?
  172.     Dru had said that someone was coming.  That he walked in between 
  173. darkness and light.  But that was all she could... or would say.
  174.     Whoever he was, he was staying out of sight.
  175.     He continued on, walking and thinking.  All would resolve itself.  But 
  176. now he was hungry.  Now it was time to make her suffer more...

  195. Great story! Kept me on the edge of my seat. I liked the way you delt
  196. with the incantation. (That Dru was the only purely evil thing in the
  197. room) Seeing Spike in a somewhat different role was interesting, and so
  198. was his brake-up with Dru. The only thing I didn't understand was what
  199. happened to Calefacto. Is she something in between a vampire and a human
  200. now?

  290. Buffy looked at the bare wall in front of her. She was being released 
  291. today, and today, she would see Angel. Giles had come in earlier to 
  292. tell her that he was awake. Her heart had jumped into her throat, and 
  293. hadnÆt gone back to its proper place. She was in a constant state of 
  294. anticipation, and felt she might bust her way out of this place now if 
  295. they didnÆt hurry up. 
  296.  
  297. Willow stopped at the doorway and looked at BuffyÆs bed. 
  298.  
  299. "ItÆs okay, Will. IÆm not asleep."
  300.  
  301. "Do you ever go to sleep, Buffy? æCause every time I come in here 
  302. youÆre always-"
  303.  
  304. "HowÆs Angel?" Buffy sat up eagerly.
  305.  
  306. "Oh. Angel? HeÆs better. He canÆt wait to see you." She paused. 
  307. "UhàBuffy?"
  308.  
  309. "What?"
  310.  
  311. "I kinda faked some stuff for Angel on the records."
  312.  
  313. "Faked? As inà"
  314.  
  315. "Hacked. Yeah. AngelÆs now my step-brother."
  316.  
  317. Buffy burst into a fit of giggles. "Will, he doesnÆt look anything 
  318. like you!"
  319.  
  320. "Well, step siblings donÆt have to look alike, and this way, heÆll 
  321. have some family. Besides, only a relative was allowed to 
  322. provide his information."
  323.  
  324. Another nurse stepped into the room. "Buffy Sommers?" 
  325.  
  326. "ThatÆs me," Buffy answered perkily.
  327.  
  328. "Everything has gone through. YouÆre free to go. Just sign 
  329. yourself out."
  330.  
  331. Willow didnÆt think sheÆd ever seen a bigger smile on her 
  332. friendÆs face.
  333.

  335. Buffy bolted into the room, running smack into a doctor. They 
  336. both backed up.

  338. "Oh my God! IÆm so sorry!"
  339.  
  340. The doctor looked slightly amused. "ThatÆs okay. Just next time, 
  341. try not to run in a hospital."
  342.  
  343. "Sorry!" She repeated to his retreating back. As soon as he had 
  344. disappeared, however, she took off for AngelÆs bed. Behind the
  345. curtain. Number 302, she recalled. She pulled back the 
  346. antisepticly white cloth to reveal Angel sitting up in bed reading 
  347. a small book. She guessed it wasnÆt about demons.
  348.  
  349. He looked up when he saw her and smiled. "Buffy." Her heart 
  350. constricted in her chest. He looked absolutely beautiful sitting 
  351. against the crisp white sheets, light pouring from the window
  352. through the gauzy white curtains.
  353.  
  354. She hurried to his bedside, settling on the edge of a chair and 
  355. kissing him hard. "I missed you," she declared, burying her 
  356. head in his chest and reassuring herself. 
  357.  
  358. "I missed you too," he responded quietly. He waited; stroked 
  359. her hair. "Buffy?"
  360.  
  361. "huh?"
  362.  
  363. "What happened in the library- To Spike and Drusilla, I mean."
  364.  
  365. She looked up into his eyes. "I staked them," she replied 
  366. fiercely. "Oh my God- I didnÆt even tell Giles."
  367.  
  368. "I had a feeling you had. I couldnÆt remember."
  369.  
  370. "IÆll let him know as soon as I get out of hereà Hey! When are
  371. you getting out, anyway?"
  372.  
  373. He sighed. "Unfortunately, not for a while. I had to get stitches.
  374.  Just donÆt heal like I used to." 
  375.  
  376. Buffy cringed. "Stitches? Ow." 
  377.  
  378. "Yeah," he answered, "but itÆs worth it."
  379.  
  380. Her heart melted. She kissed him again gently. "Poor Angel." Their 
  381. lips met again. He smiled. Buffy reached at the foot of AngelÆs bed,
  382. grabbing the chart. 
  383.  
  384. "Angel Claire," she read. "Angel Claire?"
  385.  
  386. "Willow said it was from a book sheÆd read. A love story."
  387.  
  388. "Really," Buffy asked, intrigued, "And what happens?"
  389.  
  390. >From the doorway, Willow answered. "Well, he breaks her heart, 
  391. she marries another guy, goes insane and kills him and is executed."
  392.  
  393. Buffy raised her eyebrows, "Will, why do you wound me?"
  394.  
  395. "Did I mention he marries her cousin?"
  396.  
  397. BuffyÆs nose scrunched up. "eww!" She looked at Angel. "Promise 
  398. to never marry my cousin?"
  399.  
  400. He watched her with an amused expression. "As long as you promise 
  401. not to marry another guy. Or kill anyone, for that matter."
  402.  
  403. "Okay. Deal." She shook his hand and leaned towards him. "You need 
  404. to get some rest," she whispered intimately, "IÆll see you later."
  405.  
  406. "goodbye," he answered softly.
  407.  
  408. "Sleep," she commanded on her way out.

  445. Sunnydale.  If you couldn't figure out who the other two characters

  448.             INNER DEMONS  Part 2
  449.  
  450.     "And you're sure you saw this guy."
  451.     "Xander, vampires don't just turn to dust by themselves."
  452.     "Spontainious combustion?"  Xander shrank a bit under the glare his 
  453. friend turned on him.  "Hey.  It could happen.  Right?"
  454.     "What could happen?" came a familiar voice from behind them.  The two 
  455. turned to see a man standing near the library doors.
  456.     "Hey Giles," Xander said in greeting.  "Buffy was just telling me about 
  457. the strange happenings while on patrol last night."
  458.     "What sort of strange things?" came the response, as Giles lead them 
  459. into the library.
  460.     "Strange," Giles finally said, after listening to Buffy retell her 
  461. story.  "Yes, very unusual."
  462.     "Unusual?" Buffy echoed.  "That's all you have to say?"
  463.     "In an area where the unusual is... well... usual, what would you have 
  464. me say?"
  465.     "That you've maybe heard of this guy," Buffy countered.  "Isn't there 
  466. something in your books about a Robin Hood wannabe who goes around 
  467. shooting vampires?"
  468.     "I can look again, if you wish, however, I have heard nothing of a 
  469. strange man running around with a longbow."
  470.     There was a lull in the discussion.  That is until Willow walked in the 
  471. room.  She surveyed the group with a puzzled look.
  472.     "Okay, what's going on?" she started.  "Something's up isn't it.  
  473. Anything I can do?"
  474.     "Not unless you've seen a strange guy running around Sunnydale lately, 
  475. Will," came Buffy's answer.
  476.     "Which strange man?" Willow asked.  "There are so many strange men 
  477. around here.  You know with the hellmouth and everything."
  478.     "This one, apparently carries a longbow," Giles explained, "Buffy say 
  479. him shoot down two vampires last night."
  480.     "Oh...," she breathed.  "Well... that's a good thing..., at least."
  481.     "Well that was the grossest thing I've ever seen," said Cordelia as she 
  482. burst into the room.  She looked at everyone, "Well?"
  483.     "Well what?" asked Giles.
  484.     "Aren't you going to ask me what happened?"
  485.     "Sorry, Cor," Xander replied, "we were talking about strange people.  
  486. We were just about to get to you."
  487.     "Well, anyway," Cordy continued as she glared at Xander, "my neighbor 
  488. found this big, dead cat on her fron lawn."
  489.     "Aawww!  Poor thing!" Willow exclaimed.  "It was probably hit by a car 
  490. last night."
  491.     "I don't think a car could have ripped the thing's head off."  Cordy 
  492. replied.
  493.     "Eww."
  494.     "Could there be another cult in town, Giles?" Buffy asked.
  495.     "It's possible," Giles started.  "Willow, the animal shelter would have 
  496. picked up the body by now."
  497.     "I'll go check their files," Willow answered as she headed for her 
  498. computer.
  499.     "I found it," she called, after a few minutes of searching.  "One dead, 
  500. male cougar found," she read, "head torn from body.  Cause of death, 
  501. excessive blood loss."
  502.     "That would mean vampires or cults, right?" Xander asked.
  503.     "Those would be my first choices as well," Giles confirmed.  "However, 
  504. we shouldn't rule out any possibilities."
  505.     "Uh oh," Willow interupted.  "It says that they've found several other 
  506. animals in the last few days.  All killed the same way."
  507.     "Looks like I have extra work to do tonight," Buffy groaned as she 
  508. looked at the library clock.  "We should get to class."
  509.     With that the four kids vacated the library, leaving Giles his 
  510. research.
  511.  
  512.                                *   *   *   *   *
  513.  
  514.     "So you're mom's out of town again?" Willow asked as they left class 
  515. later that day.
  516.     "Yeah," Buffy said, "some big art show up north."
  517.     "Doesn't it feel kinda weird to have your mom gone all the time."
  518.     "Not really..." Buffy said, "Well... yeah, kinda.  I don't know.  With 
  519. the... current situation, I sort of prefer her to be away from here.  
  520. It's one less person to worry about."
  521.     "Well, there is that," Willow agreed.
  522.     They walked out into the court yard and just stood there for a while.
  523.     "Hey, Oz's band is playing at the Bronze tonight," Willow suggested, 
  524. "wanna join me."
  525.     "Can't," Buffy sighed, "I have extra work tonight, remember?"
  526.     "Oh... well..." Willow searched for an alternative, "you could show up 
  527. for a little while."
  528.     "No, I should really do some patroling tonight," she grumbled.  "Maybe 
  529. next time."
  530.     "Alright," as Willow finally gave in, "I'll see you tomorrow then."
  531.     "Ok.  Be careful out there," the slayer cautioned.
  532.     "You too."
  533.  
  534.                            *   *   *   *   *
  535.  
  536.     On the hunt that night, Buffy silently patrolled the ally ways in the 
  537. residential area.  She had carefully made her way over to the park when 
  538. she heard a noise from above her.  She climbed to the rooftops and 
  539. resumed her search.
  540.     The slayer made a pass around the buildings.  When she finally stopped, 
  541. she noticed the merry-go-round down below.  She remembered how she had 
  542. once watched Angel and Drusilla talking and her heart seized.  She shook 
  543. her head to clear it of thoughts of her lost love and started back to 
  544. the ladder.
  545.     She had just reached a large air conditioner housing when she felt, 
  546. rather than heard something behind her.  But in the time it took her to 
  547. spin around and reach for her stake, the whistle of an arrow could be

  550.     ôOkay,ö Buffy breathed, ôwhoever you are, thanks for the help.  Now 
  551. show yourself.ö
  552.     It came quickly and quietly.  An arm encircled her waist while a gloved 
  553. hand clamped down on her mouth.  In an instant, she was pulled back 
  554. against the mystery person and was being manuvered back to the housing.  
  555. She struggled to free herself, but her captorÆs grip was too strong for 
  556. her to break.
  557.     ôShhh!ö a soft, accented male voice whispered in her ear.  ôItÆs 
  558. alright.  IÆm not going to hurt you.ö
  559.     ôBuffy ceased her struggles and he released her.  She turned to face 
  560. the visage of her rescuer from the night before.
  561.     He was a head taller than she.  His dark brown hair fell just below his 
  562. shoulders.  His face held a gentle severity and he looked at her through 
  563. kind yet haunted blue green eyes.  As before, he was dressed all in 
  564. black from the soft leather boots he wore to the leather hat that 
  565. covered his head.  Over his shoulder, Buffy could see a bow and quiver 
  566. of arrows strapped to his back.
  567.     ôWho are...ö she wasnÆt allowed to finish.  He held up a hand to 
  568. silence her and listened to the night.  Deftly he manuvered her around 
  569. behind him.  The stranger then reached for his bow, and arrow, rolled 
  570. around the corner and fired.
  571.     Satisfied that the shot had found itÆs target, he returned to his 
  572. previous position and rearmed himself.  After listening again for a 
  573. moment, he repeated the move on the other side of the housing.
  574.     ôNo witnesses,ö he said quietly.  ôNot yet anyway.ö  Again he listened.  
  575. When he was sure that the area had been cleared, he took the slayer by 
  576. the hand and dead her to the edge of the roof.
  577.     ôOkay,ö Buffy said when they were both on the ground, ônow who are 
  578. you?ö
  579.     ôNo one important,ö he said.  He suddenly turned his face to the wall.  
  580. ôGet out of here,ö he growled.
  581.     ôWhatÆs wrong?ö
  582.     ôGo please.  I donÆt want to hurt you!ö he pleaded.  ôI donÆt know how 
  583. long I can hold back!ö
  584.     ôLet me help you.ö
  585.     ôNo one can help me,ö he said mournfully.
  586.     Suddenly, there was a movement near by.  They both turned turned at it 
  587. and, in the dim moonlight, Buffy saw that the manÆs face had changed.  
  588. The face of a hungry vampire now stared back at her.
  589.     She almost jumped.  But then she remembered the stake in her sleave.  
  590. She got it out, prepared to fight as the vampire made a move towards 
  591. her.  When, suddenly, he went in the direction of the sound.  In a 
  592. flash, he had his hands on a large stray cat and was feeding from it.  
  593. He flung the meal away and leaned against the wall.
  594.     ôPlease go,ö he begged, ôthat wonÆt be enough.ö
  595.     Buffy took one last look at him and took off, dropping the stake as she 
  596. left.  The fiend grabbed it from the ground and turned it on himself.  
  597. He tried to plunged it into his own heart but couldnÆt.  He finally 
  598. found himself flinging the weapon away with a defeated cry as he sank to 
  599. the ground sobbing.

  686. Angel strolled down the street, acutely aware of the life and 
  687. light around him. The sun beat down on his back, and gave 
  688. him a warm, familiar feeling. It was funny. Sometimes, heÆd 
  689. notice a strange birdÆs song, or the way the sunlight reflected 
  690. off a car. 
  691.  
  692. Buffy would laugh, never noticing any of these things. SheÆd 
  693. never known any other kind of life, he thought, and smiled. 
  694. Better for her, but for him, it only increased the joy that life 
  695. brought him now. And the fact that that life would someday 
  696. end made each moment still more precious and wonderful.
  697.  
  698. Angel Claire. He was getting used to this life. No one seemed 
  699. to question him here- where he came from, his family (even 
  700. though Willow and Buffy had concocted a story). With GilesÆ 
  701. help, it hadnÆt been difficult procuring a job at the museum. His 
  702. historical knowledge was unparalleled. Buffy liked to joke that 
  703. he was becoming just like Giles. Truthfully, there seemed 
  704. worse fates. 
  705.  
  706. After heÆd woken up after the transformation, questions had 
  707. plagued him. Why? He didnÆt deserve this- after all heÆd done. 
  708. HeÆd often wake up wondering if the whole thing wasnÆt some 
  709. idle daydream, but then heÆd see the sun shining cryptically 
  710. down on him and thoughts would become muddled. The 
  711. questions grew fewer and fewer as he settled into his new life, 
  712. and a faint hope began to build in him. 
  713.  
  714. He felt a pair of gentle arms slide around his waist from the 
  715. back, and turned to look at her. BuffyÆs smile lit up her whole 
  716. face. 
  717.  
  718. "Hey," she purred, reaching up to touch his face. She kissed 
  719. him gently, absorbing the light and the heat of the day along with 
  720. the touch of his lips. She pulled back and her brow crinkled. 
  721. "Watcha doing?" 
  722.  
  723. "Thinking," he replied simply.
  724.  
  725. She put her hands on her hips. "About what?" 
  726.  
  727. "Stuff." He smiled at her attitude.
  728.  
  729. "Listen. YouÆre not allowed to be cryptic boy anymore. I thought 
  730. we went over this already. Remember? The rules to being mortal? 
  731. Nothing more mysterious than your run of the mill secret affairs." 
  732. She raised her eyebrows anxiously. "YouÆre not having an affair, 
  733. are you?"
  734.  
  735. "No, Buffy. I was thinking about vampires."
  736.  
  737. "Oh." She became very serious. "You donÆt- Angel, you donÆt 
  738. regret it, do you?"
  739.  
  740. He was adamant in an instant. "No! Of course not, Buffy. I 
  741. wouldnÆt trade *this* for anything in the world."
  742.  
  743. She breathed out in sheer relief, and took his hand. "Then what?"
  744.  
  745. "ItÆs justà Well, I feel like I donÆt deserve-"
  746.  
  747. "Angel," she interrupted him, "weÆve been through this."
  748.  
  749. "I just canÆt get over it that quickly."
  750.  
  751. "I know you canÆt get over what the demon did in your body, but 
  752. thatÆs exactly what it was- the demon. It wasnÆt you. I know 
  753. *youÆd* never hurt anyone like that."

  755. He brushed some blond hair from her face. "Thank you," he 
  756. whispered solemnly
  757.  
  758. "Hey," she answered, kissing his cheek, "anytime."

  762. Little was visible in the dark warehouse, save a lone candle that was 
  763. inching its way to the center of the room. Closer inspection would 
  764. reveal a dark vampire, listlessly drifting across the charred floor. She

  766. crinkled slowly as she read in an otherwise dead room.

  768. Her eyes brightened as she lit upon an interesting passage.

  770. "Resurrection of the undead," she read to herself, and laughed. 
  771. "Exactly what I needed for you, Spike, love. Katherine is so much

  878. "Full speed ahead on the plan. I told him that there wasn=92t a lot he co=

  882. could turn. You=92ve just got to promise me that you won=92t tell him any=

  886. "Buffy, I don=92t think Armageddon could stop you. Maybe slow you down bu=

  892. Willow waited outside while Buffy lied to her mother. They only had about
  893. eight hours before sunrise and everything had to be ready by then. Buffy
  894. waved to her mother one last time before shutting the front door. Willow =

  896. impressed with the ease Buffy could lie to her mother, but then again Wil=
  897. low
  898. was impressed with the ease Buffy did just about everything.

  900. "Is you=92re mom mad?"
  901.  
  902. "Why should she be mad, Will? For all she knows I=92m spending the weeken=
  903. d
  904. with your family in LA."

  906. "What are you going to do if she finds out you didn=92t go to LA. with my
  907. parents?"

  909. "As long as she doesn=92t find out by sunrise tomorrow, it really won=92t
  910. matter."

  912. "We=92ll go back to my house. My parents already left so there will be no=
  913.  one
  914. there. We can go over the plan one more time and make sure that you=92re =
  915. ready
  916. for sunrise."

  920. As Buffy and Willow walked towards Willow=92s house, Buffy felt someone
  921. watching them. At the corner before Willow=92s street, a pair of vampires
  922. jumped from the bushes. Buffy had already known they were there and was
  923. anticipating the attack. Before the first one had a chance to attack, She
  924. reduced him to a pile of dust. The second vampire took his opportunity to
  925. grab Willow.
  926.  
  927. "Wouldn=92t this have been so much more fair one on one? Why=92d ya=92 ha=
  928. ve to
  929. bring my friend into it?" Buffy hit the vampire so hard he released Willo=
  930. w
  931. and turned his full attention towards her. "I understand, you=92re more t=
  932. he
  933. silent type? Was you=92re friend the talkative one? I never did get the c=
  934. hance
  935. to have a conversation with him." The vampire charged at Buffy but she
  936. avoided the charge by jumping into a tree. "Surprise. Your attacks would =
  937. be
  938. so much more successful if you employed the element of surprise. I=92m so=
  939. rry,
  940. this really has been fun but I have big plans in the morning and I do hav=
  941. e
  942. things that have to be done first. Please accept this with my apology."
  943. Jumping from the tree, Buffy turned the remaining vampire to dust with a
  944. broken tree branch.

  946. "You okay, Will?"
  947.  
  948. "Of Course. Are you sure you=92re ready for this plan? It could be danger=
  949. ous.
  950. Maybe Giles is right, this isn=92t a good idea."
  951.  
  952. "Will, Where=92d the cold feet come from? I can do this. You=92re forgett=
  953. ing it=92
  954. s Angel we=92re talking about."
  955.  
  956. Willow opened her front door and let Buffy enter. "Buffy, you=92re not be=
  957. ing a
  958. hundred percent truthful with yourself. It=92s not actually Angel you=92l=
  959. l be
  960. facing at sunrise. When you confront him, he=92ll very much be Angelus, a=
  961. nd
  962. Angelus isn=92t Angel. This could be very bad. "

  964. "Listen, if this doesn=92t work Angelus will kill me. If I don=92t at lea=
  965. st try,
  966. Angelus will kill me anyway. In the big picture what does it matter if I =
  967. die
  968. tomorrow or in two weeks, I=92ll still be just as dead. At least this way=
  969. ,
  970. there=92s a chance I=92ll be successful and by sunset tomorrow, Angel wil=
  971. l be
  972. back and Angelus will be gone for good."
