Best advice is to throw it away and buy a Bhore Mhore valve from Cushing, or a
Merrick valve. (the origional, some of the copies aren't very good) You don't
want to enter the hell of leather flappers.
I remember having to chew on the dang things for about 5 min to soften them up
so that they would seal back when that was all that was available after you have
been playing one for awhile, that gets pretty nasty.

It's my experience that oiling doesn't hurt a thing, so long as you didn't
immerse the chanter in the stuff, or drench the wood. A light swabbing
every other year has been sufficient for me. If things are a bit different,
you can always tinker with the seat (have an expert do this), or widen some
of the holes that have flattened (a last-ditch move). Still, I'm sure the
chanter will be ok.

yank em' off. Is that why there's so many bald pipers? ;?)~

You must have ears of stone Richard! My daughter and I just started our indoor
practicing (due to the WONDERFUL weather changes) and I already can notice loss
of hearing after a month, accompanied by ringing in my ears afterwards, and
even pressure like when your ears pop in a quick descent. I first became aware
of it because I had to start cranking up the volume on the TV set a few
notches, and soon the other symptoms started. We do practice in a carpeted
environment, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. We certainly play (at
least I do, my daughter plays her band chanter and reed which is much louder) a
comparatively quiet set of pipes.
I found after a couple of days off, that the symptoms subsided, but I certainly
recognize it as a warning signal that we need some ear protection. Now if I can
just find some that are effective at a reasonable price...

One year, I flew to Scotland on British Air, and they had a scale in the
line-up area for carry-ons. I suppose the theory is that if your carry-on
was too heavy, you had to go home and get something lighter. Scale
notwithstanding, no one even bothered to ask, and my pipes came on board
with me without a hitch. Like so many others, I've seen the restrictions on
carry-on size and/or weight posted, but rarely enforced, unless you're
really "pushing the envelope" and bringing something truly big and bulky.

Nothing but trash! Pipers who play marches should have their fingers
cut off. Pipers who play reels and strathspeys should be boiled in oil.
And as for a piper who would play a jig or hornpipe ... well ... I
can't think of a terrible enough punishment.
Only piobaireachd. That's the ticket. When we play Dixie and Johnny
Comes Marching and Just Before the Battle, people laugh at us. We may
think they like it, but they are just being polite and don't want to
hurt our feelings.
Only piobaireachd. At weddings, we march the bride down to Squinting
Patrick. At funerals, we inter the body to The Crashing of the Waves.
At celedhs, we render The King's Taxes and All the Men Paid Rent. This
is what the public really wants, and I gaurantee that if you do this,
you will be utterly astounded at the demand for your services.

Another option is windows NT (or wait for Windows 2000). The profile systems and
added security features can sometimes be useful for locking out the kiddies. -
but take bagpip's suggestion to heart - you'd need a relatively new/upgraded
computer.

system (most new ones will)

In your neck of the woods you have the world's number one pipe band
(SFU) and the world's number one pipe links webmaster (Bob Dunsire). If
you can't get a teacher from these resources, you can't get a teacher!
One thing that you will find out is that one piper will tell you to do
something one way and never to do it a secod way, and a second piper
will tell you the the first is dead wrong and that you should never do
it the first way! So ... when you get into this game, make up your mind
that you will learn what your teacher tells you and try to do it
perfectly, but that your teacher is almost certainly wrong and that you
need to keep an open mind about everything. Don't tell him, though.
This applies to equipment (reed: wet or don't wet, scrape in the middle
or scrape on the sides, squeeze or not) techinique (birl: swipe-drag or
double-tap or tap drag; D-throws) expressions (round or cut) brands
(Kron vs. Gibson is a classic) and everything else. Pipers love to
play, drink, make love, and argue, and not necessarily in this order.

season.
At least I hope thats the reason.
My daughter (and hopefully the whole band) is gearing up to honor the officer
in Holyoke, Ma. who lost his life to a crack-head-dealer jerk. This guy was
absolutely the nicest person alive. He helped my mom when she fell and couldn't
contact us for help, but even though he was off duty, he went and gave her a
ride home from the hospital. A very fine gentleman indeed. Hopefully the whole
band will be there for his funeral, but if not we and my daughter will
certainly be there for his honorable send off.
Officer Dinapoli, we love you, and respect what you did for the community you
grew up in, and gave your life for.
All the best from to your loved ones at this horrible time in your lives.
Christmas will never be the same, as easter will never be for us.
Gods peace to you.

Hi...
I agree.... excellent advice on teacher's background...
May I add some on teaching style, effectiveness and motivation..
John, you, as an experienced musician.... know how you learn best and under
what types of instructors you learn best... in the first interview... and
subsequent lessons... will find out, not just how good of a musician your
teacher is... but also how good of a teacher... how flexible, how
adaptable..compatible to you... able to come up with alternative approaches
if one approach does not fit you... etc.
Is the teacher interested in your development at your pace... or wanting you
into a band... asap... before you are ready... Is the teacher interested in
developing the proper foundation of fundamentally sound, correct execution...
My point is... that the instructor does not have to be a performing virtuoso
to be an effective teacher...
Good luck..
I wish every day could be Christmas, except for Christmas Eve, and maybe the
Fourth of July....... John Pryne

Subject: (bagpipe) Christmas Blue Bonnets
Just sitting here, surfing, and listening to the Christmas programs on NPR. The
just had the Scottish National Dance Team on, and the piper played "Blue
Bonnets." (A very nice job, BTW.)
I'm wondering if this tune has any seasonal significance. Or if the dance was
just a repitoire perfomance. Anyone know?
And while I'm wondering, are there any traditional pipe tunes for GHB that are
not in general circulation? Either Advent, or Christmas, or Epiphany? or New
Years (besides ALS?) If so, what are they and are they in print?
Merry Christmas all, even Bagpiip. I love you, man, even in spite of yourself.

Be very cautious with that idea though. Unless your PC is VERY new, and has
memory to spare, you may just crash it, or create bigger headaches. The people
who built mine told me not to, even though they could've made a big profit from
1) selling it to me. and 2) repairing whatever damage it did. They were very
honest in NOT recomending it.
So be sure your computer PC,(not practice chanter) is up to the upgrade before
you do.

Subject: (bagpipe) Bad weather advice needed!
Since my daughters band will be playing at what will be her first funeral, we
need some cold weather advice.
The prediction for tues is around 32 degrees, with possible light snow
flurries. Our question is, are we better off keeping the pipes at room temp (as
inside the car) up until play time, or is it better to get them closer to the
outside temp by gradually acclimating them closer to the outside temp?
I realize that no sudden change is good, and it should be gradual, so it seems
keeping them inside until play time would not be very good.
Any advice?
TIA

Hi ....
Though I bit the bullet and am on Windows 98.... I agree .... implement
cautiously... you may have to contact on-line every manufacturer of every
peripheral you have installed and download new drivers... just for starters... do
it BEFORE you attempt the switchover.
Good Luck... wish you a uneventful Y2K.
I wish every day could be Christmas, except for Christmas Eve, and maybe the Fourth
of July....... John Pryne

Ideal conditions for playing plastic pipes.
As I understand it, the problem is not when the pipes go from cold to hot, but
vice versa. Pipes always go from cold to hot, so to speak, when they come out
of the case and you play them. If it's cold out, they just go from colder
(instead of cold) to hot.
I don't really know what to tell you. I'd play plastic and not worry about
it.
Or if it's possible to do all your playing in a small amount of time, and
pretty much continuously, you might be okay.
Hopefully somebody can give better advice. You don't want to take a chance on
cracking good pipes. Madman? Am I being too cautious?
