Pentatonic scales can be explained exactly like Jennifer Runner did,
with black piano keys.
As white piano keys are diatonic C-Major scale, derived pentatonic scale
would be c# - d# - f - g# - a#, which are the notes not represented in
siku and which can be added as the third row (chromatic siku). If we
associate in our mind other diatonic scale for white keys, we could
derive successively other pentatonic scales. Theoretically we could make
antaras in any possible pentatonic scale, but in practice the most used
combinations are : c - d - e - g - a and g - a - h - d - e. The reason
for this could be the choice of tonality to accompany antaras on
strings, although originally antaras are played without them.
I would add only that one particular pentatonic scale has five modes,
depending with which of the five notes this scale begins. These modes
are designated with letters a, b, c, d, and e. This is perhaps the
answer for Ken Webster's question about when to stop adding more tubes
in antara.

This is a bit off-topic for the Andina-L list, but as most of us
on this list enjoy a wide range of Latin music, I thought it would
be of interest.
Olmedo Torres, a wonderful saxophone player from Ecuador, died on
04 March. One of the first albums of traditional Ecuadorian tunes
I purchased, back when I first became interested in Latino music,
was "Olmedo Torres y Su Saxo--Canciones de Oro." The following is
taken from the on-line version of Diario Hoy from 07 March:
En la decada del 70, "Los locos del ritmo" hacian vibrar al publico
quiten~o. Las canciones: "La cinta verde, "La cumbia triste," entre
otras, tadquirian un sentimiento especial bajo la melodi'a del saxo
de Olmedo Torres. Desde entonces, Torres grabo' un centenar de discos
de larga duracio'n y posteriormente, dos discos compactos,
consituye'ndose en uno de los artistas nacionales que ma's grabaciones
ha realizado.
El jueves pasado, 4 de marzo, Olmedo Torres, conocido en el a'mbito
arti'stico como "El saxo con alma," murio' a los 73 an~os de edad, al
sufrir un infarto.
Este mu'sico nacio' en Cuenca. En la capital de la provincia del Azuay
estudio' mu'sica en el Conservatorio. Su carrera arti'stica, dedicada
a la interpretacio'n de mu'sica popular y nacional, fue creciendo gracias
a su talento y carisma. Adema's de ser buen mu'sico y amigo entran~able,
tambie'n fue un duro cri'tico de la difi'cil situacio'n que vive el
artista ecuatoriano. Por ese hecho preferi'a viajar constantamente
a los Estados Unidos, donde, consideraba, se trata mejor al artista,
se valora su capacidad. Hay un reconocimiento ma's justo.
Miguel Venegas, directivo de la Asociacio'n de Artistas Profesionales
de Pichincha, asegura que Olmedo Torres fue uno de los mejores
saxofonistas latinoame'ricanos. "Despue's del recordado Julio Jaramillo,
conocido como Mister Juramento, fue quien grabo' la mayor cantiadad de
discos. Torres fue acompan~ante de las ma's representativas figuras
de antan~o que ha tenido el pai's, y tambie'n, de los nuevos valores
del cancionero ecuatoriano," asegura el dirigente.
Como directivo del gremio arti'stico, Miguel Venegas lamenta que
mu'sicos de la vali'a de Olmedo Torres, que dedicaron toda su vida
a la cultura, ahora mueran sin tener nigu'n tipo de apoyo estatal:
"Olmedo muere en la pobreza ma's absoluta", afirma.

I didn't realize Olmedo Torres was anywhere near that old. It
makes me wonder which other Ecuadorian musicians are no longer
alive. I have a CD of Olmedo Torres and pianist Huberto
Santacruz. Is he alive? Probably not.
Is rondador player Arturo Aguirre alive? Segundo Bautista? Flavio
Bastidas? Segundo Duen~as? Nelson Duen~as? Rodrigo Saltos?

I have the same edition of the same book. And I suspected it of
bias in favor of J. D. Feraud recording stars. But perhaps not.
Nelson Duen~as recorded for them - yet he is not mentioned. Many
of the other names are not obscure. I would expect them to appear
in the book.

Hello Andina!
I am taking a world music course this semester and one of our projects
involves researching the music of a particular area. I have chosen to
do my research on Andean music. :-)
Part of my project involves researching how Andean musicians learn
the music and its role or meaning in different areas of the world. If
you could take a few minutes to answer about 10 questions about
the music you play, I would really appreciate your contributions.
(I'll be glad to get input from anyone, whether professional musicians
or not.) If you only want to answer a few of the questions that's fine
with me and any additional comments or suggestions would of course
be welcome.
I will also be doing research about the history of the music and would
be glad to share the information I find with anyone who is interested.

Hi Manuel and list.
Sorry I can=27t answer this question. I=27d like to know myself.
Thought I had something on pentatonic scales in a magazine
but have not located it yet.
The problem is one of definition, which of the five notes is to be =
regarded as the key note. Interestingly any pentatonic scale shares
all five notes with three different major or minor scales. For example
E G A C D are all found in the major keys of C, F and G.
It seems to me that one of these three would probably be the key
note as these scales are compatible with this pentatonic scale, but which =
one I don=27t know. If I was to guess I would choose G as it is
the most common key for Andean instruments. This is a pretty
shaky guess though.
This would make the interval pattern 2 3 2 2 3 so starting at A we
get A B D E F=23. Then again it could be A B C=23 E F=23 which is the =
only other pentatonic scale that fits with A Major.
Maybe some of your instruments can help. A wind instrument is usually =
keyed to its base note like quenas, tin whistles etc.
do you have any five hole winds to check with??

That is an interval pattern of 2 2 3 2 3.
So to answer Manuels question and assuming this article is correct
A Pent is A B C=23 E F=23 which I think fits with A Maj 7 being the
basis of the key so it makes sense.

I just got back from Ecuador... I was there the day after Olmedo
Torres' death... and I didn't hear anything about it. While I was
there another death occurred, that of Oswaldo Guayasamin, Ecuador's
greatest artistic figure of this century, his paintings became an
international statement of the plight of the indigenous people.

Hi list
I have been making quenas for a few years but have not done much
with the third octave until now.
I have reworked the intonation for the first two octaves on
my PVC quena. This is much more accurate and now looks very
similar to a Taki quena. The method I use is to drill a tone hole
roughly where I think it should be, then gradually enlarge the hole
until it overblows by exactly one octave. This means the note will
be sharp or flat by the same amount in both octaves. Next I
calculate a new position for the hole based on how much it is off
tune. This quena is made in sections so I then make a new section
with the hole in the calculated position. This is repeated for each
tone hole. Now a bit of playing watching the electronic tuner and a
few adjustments later and the first two octaves are quite good.
This method follows simple well known rules even if it is a lot of trial
and error work. The problem I am having is determining just
what rules to apply to the position and size of the thumb hole.
I=27m not sure the same principles apply with cross fingering.
I seem to have to make most 3rd octave notes quite sharp
in order to obtain a reasonable 3rd octave A.
Can anyone provide some detailed method for finding the best position and =
size for this hole?
Also I=27m not sure just what compromises to make between the
first, second and third octave tunings. My feeling is that as most
playing is in the first and second octaves I probably should not
compromise these very much for the sake of the little played third octave. =
Any opinions welcomed.
Ps.
A little tip I discovered is that tapering the inside of the foot
plate improves the timbre of the upper octaves considerably
as does rounding the tone hole and foot hole edges.

Hi Andina! I am researching the origins of "El Condor Pasa" and ran
across some interesting information in a book, El Condor Pasa: Vida y
Obra de Daniel Alomia Robles by Jose Varallanos. It says that this
piece was originally in a play by the same name, which takes place in
the mines of Yapac, written in 1913 for piano, and Alomia Robles based
the song on an old yaravi "Soy la Paloma que el Nido Perdio."
Does anyone know if that information is correct, or have any additional
information? The book also gives the original lyrics, I'd be curious to
know if anyone has different lyrics or has heard it sung with the lyrics
given in the book. Almost every time I have heard this song it was as
an instrumental, and I'd heard that the original lyrics were lost. Also
does anyone know the yaravi "Soy la paloma que el nido perdio"?
