I have heard several comments about the health risks of using PVC and
like materials for making flutes. The gases that these materials emit
seem to be in the carcinogen spectrum. I haven't read any scientific
reports on this, but common sense tells me one should seriously think
about this, particularly in the making of sikus.

I concur with Marcelo about potential health hazards with PVC. In our
area there is a debate about removing PVC plumbing from homes where it
is used to bring fresh water into the house. They are saying it will be
worth the cost to retrofit with other materials. I'd look in other
directions for materials for Sikus etc. personally.

Marcelo,
You are correct about gasses from PVC pipe being dangerous.... but, this
only applies if the PVC material is burned. If not under combustion there
is no danger (that I know of, and I've been making plastic flutes for
twenty years). A regular electric drill bit works great in PVC.... but
you have to be careful to not run the drill too fast and burn the
material. One concern could be materials that plastic flutes are coated
with. I've always been careful to use water based, non-toxic paints to
decorate my handiwork.

I would suspect that any volatiles emitted from a PVC tube with air
passing through it would be LESS than those emitted into drinking water
passed through the same tubes. Every morning, I have to let the water
in my bathroom sink run extra long to get rid of that nasty plastic
taste. I think there was a class action lawsuit over ABS plumbing,
possibly related to cancer risk and people having to replace it.

Subject: (andina) Arrangements for small ensembles
Hi folks...
Our little band has, alas, been pared down to a duo. Our pipe
player left for France a couple years ago and our percussionist is
now mostly out of the picture too.
So it's now just Andres and I. We both play all the instruments
with varying degrees of proficiency, but there's still only two
sets of hands to make music with. We're just finishing up a recording
with overdubs, allowing us to get the fuller sounds we want. But when
we play live, it's getting harder and harder to work out the arrangements.
A typical song might start with one of us playing the melody on the
quena or sikus while the other chords a guitar or charango; the wind
player would then pick up another stringed instrument while we sing
the vocal verses, and then switch back to the wind instrument for
a final instrumental verse. More complex songs like Alturas involve
a fair amount of instrument-switching on stage...
Do any of you play in small duo or trio settings? Any tips?

The guys from Malkuri (Ecuatorianos) play like that. I tried that
last year with them. My problem is that I play with lowest notes
on the right, which is the style I learned in Peru. That gets in
the way of the strumming, which is probably why the Malkuri guys
play backwards zamponias, Bob Dylan style.

Hi John,
The location is open at this point in time. He wanted to come to Minot,
which is an easy flight from Minneapolis, because of the facilities and
assistance here but we will see.
The date will be arranged to try to accommodate all interested persons, as
best he can.
The cost is $300.00 per week. This includes 3 hours instruction per day,
plus 3 hours of less supervised jamming with the other students per day to
practice styles and improvisation.
Alejandro's lessons are geared for novice, intermediate, and advanced
charangists.

Probably in Minot, ND. We may have some Japanese students coming and we
need to have them where we can provide additional help for Alejandro.
Minot has three flights a day from Minneapolis, so travel and lodging is
not a problem.
Alejandro has an excellent novice program. I would suggest that you get
Alejandro's method from Manuel Navarro. Knowing the techniques from his
method will really help you get beyond the basics if you take lessons from
him.

Now my summer holidays are over and I have had time to devote to music

First I tried doing a little work with the icus part of El Sicuri

Secondly I was given a CD with Vasija De Barro which I have been
learning to play on quena.
With my poor to none existent Spanish I think it
translates as (Vessel Of Clay) ?
But what is the title referring too?
Is it the pot in which the quena is sometimes played
or a reference to people as clay under the potters (Gods)
hand or perhaps something else?
I would like some input from some of you who are more
familiar with Andean culture.
Thirdly I have started to look for discographies on the net to see if I can
get a few recordings for which I already have written music.
I have copies of Thevenots and Sukays books as well as some other material.
So some suggestions and or URLs would be most helpful.

It seems to me that if you are going to stain bamboo you must do so
before it is oiled. Once oiled it may not work. You can, though, apply
lacquer to it any time.

This is one of my very favorite songs. While in Ecuador this summer,
I picked up a booklet called "Cantares" that has Vasija de Barro in
it. It has a date of composition for the song of 1950. Its a
danzante, music by the famous duo Luis A. Valencia and Gonzalo
Benitez, lyrics by Jorge Carrera Andrade (a famous poet), Hugo
Aleman, Jaime Valencia, and Jorge Enrique Adoum (another famous
poet). The lyrics in the booklet are as you have them with one
more verse and one word different, as follows:

By the way, the booklet I have has it written out in 6/8 time,
with an Em-G-B7-Em progression.
Its a beautiful song, one I have always thought of as the unofficial
national anthem of Ecuador. I probably have 6 or 7 versions of it
on various recordings, each more beautiful than the others.

I tried this last night and it seems pretty close to Savia Andina Classics
CD certainly is much better than what I had. I was starting on C rather
than B. Interestingly I found that I can get some notes to register on my
tuner using an acoustic pickup on the front of a speaker box. In this
case the first note registered as a very flat C which lead me astray from =
the beginning so perhaps this method is not very useful after all.=20

The oils I mentioned are the natural ones already in the bamboo.
I use a bamboo common around Bathurst Australia which has
short internodes only suitable for icus.
Usually I let it air dry for 2 to 4 weeks and then cure it in the oven for
2 hours on the lowest setting. I read that this dries out the bamboo
and causes the natural oils in it to flow through out the bamboo and=20
coat it. On cooling the oils harden forming a satin finish helping to
preserve the bamboo. Incidentally bamboo can be shaped
(bent or straightened) while hot. The hardening oils set the new shape.
This method is used in making that quena like Japanese flute which
I can=27t think how to spell (Saka something) or toy bow and arrows for my
son.
Some Andean bamboo instruments are coloured but I have not been
able to get a colour stain to take either before or after curing the =
bamboo.
Perhaps this is just the nature of the species I=27m using. I don=27t =
know if Andean bamboos have this problem. Does anyone know any tricks
or suggestions for colouring bamboo?
