Joel,
Did you get any responses to your email?
Couldn't you just order it from a record company?
I could give you some suggestions of companies that deal with world music
from whom you might be able to order that lost CD....

I am well aware of the major sources of Latin CDs. I didn't go
public with this until I had made some attempts to get this CD
which was recently discontinued.
Eventuly I found it at Waterloo Records & Tapes in Austin Texas.
Thanks.

Among the new CDs I bought was SOUL OF AYMARA recorded in Japan 3
years ago by Grupo Aymara. It is drums, rattles, and woodwinds.
Rhythm is dominant; melody is nearly absent.
I don't like it. If you think you might like it, it's yours.

Subject: (andina) Acrylic tubes
Date: 03 Jun 1998 08:02:26 -0400 (EDT)
A friend has made a couple panflutes from acrylic tubes, but he has not
found a supplier who can provide tubing in colors. I've contacted several
large plastics distributors, but they stock only clear tubing. There are
manufacturers who fabricate tubing in colors, but those I've contacted
don't stock it and can't provide small quantities at a reasonable price.
Any suggestions?

Last year I learned of a company here in Honolulu that was supplying
Japan-made plastic pile designed to look like bamboo.
Am emailing you directly a copy of the local newspaper article about it and
a copy of the picture of the stuff.

Ernest,
Yes, I read the article (I think you posted it?) and then e-mailed you to
find out if you had actually seen the product, which you hadn't. I called
the supplier in Honolulu several times, trying to get a brochure, prices,
and samples. They finally mailed a brochure and prices but I've not been
able to get samples. Your e-mail inspires me to try again, however.
Thanks very much,

Hi Jeanne
Please can you tell as if the acrylic tubes are obtainable in many=20
increments of size (diameter) for making really good panflutes.
Some have used PVC but there are not enough sizes and=20
the ones I make tend to be a little under powered in the base notes.
Also can you give some clues about suppliers?
The fake bamboo PVC seemed expensive to me and not to have
enough sizes.
I use wood stain on PVC but this tends to rub thin after extended use
and off course there is a toxicity issue with PVC and I=27m not sure about
wood stain. The stain works better if the surface has been rubbed back
and smoothed with around 200 grit paper.
PVC and Acrylic can be shaped or resized with heat so I guess
some serious attempts in that direction may solve the size issue.

Don't mean to butt in... I haven't been following this thread but I can
comment on PVC and toxicity. I've been making PVC end-blown and transverse
flutes for a lot of years and if I understand it right there isn't much to
worry about so long as there 1) aren't any solvents involved; 2) non-toxic
coatings are used; 3) be careful not to breath small chips or sanding dust;
AND, 4) if no heat or open flame is involved. If PVC burns it gets dangerous
fast... I'm not sure about acrylics..... when I was in school 20 years ago
we were trained to identify plastics by smell when burned.... so, well,
yeah, I do have this little tic :-)
anyway, if you get into heating plastic tubes, be careful!

What type of panflute are you trying to make?
Diatonic,cromatic,etc,let me know.
Why in plastic??
I know a group with 6 cd's who have been playing
with PVC pipes for several years(Group Khenany)
Manuel.

My friend much prefers the sound of excellent bamboo, but he wanted to
experiment with plastic because heat, dryness, dampness, etc., can make
bamboo so variable in tone. He made a couple chromatic PVC panflutes--then
he tried acrylic because the walls were thinner and liked it because the
tone seemed better. I looked for plastics distributors and manufacturers in
the Thomas Register, which is both in print and on the Web. Many of the
companies listed have online catalogs that give quite a bit of information.
As I said, if anyone comes across acrylic tubing in colors, please let me know.
Thanks,
Jeanne

Bamboo surely is mysterious. Last year I was playing with Viento de los
Andes, travelling all over Southern California, from the beach to the
inland desert, and in the summer we went to Alaska. My sikus were never
out of tune, where as the ones used by the other two wind players in
the group were always fluctuating. Perhaps it was the age of the=20
bamboo, I am not sure. I had oiled mine with lemmon oil, and the
others with linseed oil, maybe that was a factor as well. The other
wind players in the group carried a bag of lentils with them so they
could retune their sikus as needed. I would much prefer doing that
than playing plastic tubes. Then again, I made a design (on paper) for
an adjustable valve system that would allow the player to tune a tube
+/- half a tone... on the fly... a hybrid high-tech/rustic instrument...
Maybe one of these days I will prototype it and sell it to Yamaha for=20
a million bucks... nah!

Marcelo,
What you say about bamboo is interesting, but I was also interested to
learn you play with Viento de los Andes. Last August while waiting for a
flight in the Kansas City airport I heard Andean music and found musicians
playing while waiting to go to Sedalia for the Missouri State Fair. I
talked briefly with one of the guys, learned they were from California, and
bought a CD by Viento de los Andes. Were you by any chance one of the
musicians?
