  28. "... the United States should work with other nuclear nations to remove as

  84.     On 13 November, the landmark National Convention for Nuclear 
  85. Disarmament and Peace, held in New Delhi, India, announced the 
  86. formation of a Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace.  The 
  87. broad-based Coalition is the culmination of two and half years of 
  88. grassroots protest across all of India against the Pokharan-II 
  89. nuclear tests conducted in May 1998.  It emerges as the result of a 
  90. growing and sustained campaign for the complete abolition of nuclear 
  91. weapons worldwide, and South Asia in particular.
  92.  
  93.     The three day convention was sponsored by 110 organizations 
  94. and brought together more than 600 delegates from India, Pakistan, 
  95. Northeast and Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.  The 
  96. Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace gives India's peace 
  97. movement an organized national presence and profile for the first 
  98. time ever.  The Convention elected a 40- member Coordination 
  99. Committee and adopted a Charter for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace. 
  100. The Charter outlines the Indian peace movement's opposition to 
  101. nuclear weapons and rejects the reliance on nuclear weapons for 
  102. security.  The Charter demands a complete roll-back of India's and 
  103. Pakistan's nuclear weapons and missile programs.  It also calls for 
  104. the cessation of all testing and fissile material acquisition and 
  105. concrete steps for global nuclear disarmament.

  117. Nagasaki Global Citizens' Assembly for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons
  118.  
  119.     From 17-20 November, a Global Citizens' Assembly for the 
  120. Elimination of Nuclear Weapons was held in Nagasaki, Japan.  The 
  121. Assembly had several unique features in that it was the last 
  122. anti-nuclear NGO conference of the 20th century and was held in the 
  123. last city bombed by an atomic weapon.  Anti-nuclear non-governmental 
  124. organization (NGO) leaders from around the world joined world 
  125. citizens to generate a new vision for the 21st century based on 
  126. activities and experiences of the past.  At the conclusion of the 
  127. Assembly, the Nagasaki Appeal was adopted.  An excerpt from the 
  128. Appeal reads:

  130. "During our conference, we have learned from the stories of many who 
  131. have suffered from the nuclear age: the hibakusha and downwinders 
  132. from Hiroshima and Nagasaki; Semipalatinsk, Nevada, and Moruroa; 
  133. Chernobyl and Tokaimura. The world's citizens must now be mobilized 
  134. to form a potent global movement, and it is this force that will 
  135. compel governments to fulfill their promises.  All sectors of the 
  136. global community must be involved including women, youth, workers, 
  137. religious communities and indigenous peoples."

  142.     Abolition 2000 also held a Review and Strategy Meeting prior 
  143. to the conference and Abolition 2000 activities were also introduced 
  144. and discussed during the formal plenary and workshop sessions.  Notes 
  145. from the Abolition 2000 meetings and follow-up will be mailed out to 
  146. member organizations in January.  An electronic version will also be

  154. Conference in Japan Urges End to Anti-Missile Defenses
  155.  
  156.     On 30 November, the World Conference on Religion and Peace 
  157. (WCRP) called on world leaders to halt the development of ballistic 
  158. missile defense systems being developed by the US.  A statement was 
  159. released by a newly formed WCRP Standing Commission on Disarmament 
  160. and Security, which met during the week in Kyoto.  The WCRP also 
  161. released plans to strengthen conflict prevention and peace 
  162. initiatives.
  163.  
  164.     Twenty-three representatives from religious and disarmament 
  165. organizations from 14 countries attended the two-day meeting. 
  166. Members of the commission stated that the use of nuclear weapons 
  167. contradicts their shared moral and spiritual beliefs, and they should 
  168. be eliminated.  In particular, the commission voiced concern over the 
  169. development of missile defense systems that would require renewed 
  170. testing of nuclear weapons and intensify resistance to further 
  171. reductions in existing nuclear arsenals.
  172.  
  173.     The commission stated that missile defense legitimizes 
  174. nuclear weapons as an important factor in international relations, 
  175. and it reaffirmed the importance of the Anti-Ballistic Missile 
  176. Treaty.  It also called on world leaders to realize their commitment 
  177. to eliminate nuclear weapons.

  182. Protest at NSA Menwith Hill, UK
  183.  
  184.     On 13 December Anni Rainbow and Lindis Percy, Co-Coordinators 
  185. of the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB) 
  186. quietly prevented American cars from coming out of NSA Menwith Hill 
  187. by standing in front of them and refusing to move.  They carried the 
  188. "Stars and Stripes" with "STOP STAR WARS" written on it and a placard 
  189. which read, "George W Bush?  Oh dear!"
  190.  
  191.     Rainbow and Percy were at MHS to witness and protest at the 
  192. role of NMD at Menwith Hill and the pending "election" of George W 
  193. Bush as the 43rd US President.
  194.  
  195.     Both were arrested and charged with "obstruction of the 
  196. highway" at the Main Entrance to the base by the Ministry of Defense 
  197. Police who act for the Americans at MHS.  A permanent injunction was 
  198. brought by the Secretary of State for Defense in 1996 and prevents 
  199. Percy from entering MHS.   
  200.  
  201.     Rainbow and Percy believe it is even more important than ever 
  202. before to speak up and protest American plans to deploy an National 
  203. Missile Defense (NMD) program, especially in light of Bush's 
  204. "election."  NMD cannot function without the formal consent of the UK 
  205. government. Both MHS and Flyingdales bases are crucial in the 
  206. proposed NMD program.
  207.  
  208.     CAAB will continue to organize a variety of peaceful actions 
  209. at MHS and Flyingdales.  The UK government is apparently anxious 
  210. about the possible rekindling of "grass-roots activity" (The Guardian 
  211. 12 December 2000).  And they should be!

  224.     There is a mass protest movement developing in India as a 
  225. result of the  government's failure to fulfill the demands of the 
  226. people to stop uranium mining in Jadugoda, India.  From 16-22 
  227. December, the JOAR (Jharkhandi Organization Against Radiation) is 
  228. sponsoring a hunger strike.  On 23 December, the people participating 
  229. in the movement plan to stop shipments of uranium nuclear waste being

  287.     The Arcata (CA) Nuclear Weapons Free Zone Commission is 
  288. currently engaged in an outreach and coalition-building mission.  The 
  289. Arcata City Council would like to establish and maintain contact with 
  290. other nuclear weapon free zones across the world, and with other 
  291. advocacy groups whose mission is to abolish nuclear weapons.  Perhaps 
  292. by building coalitions among us we can become more effective in our 
  293. efforts to promote nuclear disarmament from the municipal and grass 
  294. roots level.

  297. favor the total abolition of nuclear weapons, we are currently 
  298. witnessing bipartisan political support for a national Missile 
  299. Defense System that will inevitably signal the start of a new

  325. I am writing from the Women Building Peace campaign which was 
  326. launched in May 1999 by International Alert and over 100 NGO's. The 
  327. campaign has five themes:
  328.  
  329. 1. to include women in peace negotiations as decision makers
  330. 2. put women at the heart of reconstruction and reconciliation
  331. 3. strengthen the rights and protection of refugee and displaced women
  332. 4. end impunity for crimes committed against women and ensure redress
  333. 5. give women and women's organizations the support and resources 
  334. they need to build peace
  335.  
  336. The campaign aims to raise global awareness of women's experiences 
  337. and perspectives of peace and conflict, and to help women better 
  338. realize their potential as peace-builders from the village to the 
  339. international level. It seeks to influence and affect the 
  340. implementation of global policies and international standards on 
  341. peace, security and development to ensure that gender perspectives 
  342. are integrated and women's needs are met. During October 2000 we 
  343. engaged in a series of activities including working with a coalition 
  344. of US based NGOs to ensure that UN SC Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace 
  345. and Security was adopted.
  346.  
  347. International Alert believes that women and women's groups 
  348. specifically play a critical role in the peacebuilding process and 
  349. that their work should be highlighted and strengthened and should be 
  350. supported as widely as possible by all actors in the international 
  351. community.  To further raise awareness of women's peacebuilding 
  352. activities and to celebrate their achievements in this field we 
  353. launched the first ever Millennium Peace Prize for women.
  354.  
  355. We are currently collecting 250,000 signatures to present to Kofi 
  356. Annan on International Women's Day 2001, to strengthen public 
  357. awareness of the importance of women and their peacebuilding role and 
  358. to encourage the international community to adhere to the pledges 
  359. they made at the Beijing  Conference in 1995.

  362. and individuals from around the world it would be fantastic if you
