Subject: (abolition-usa) Re: Minutes of Abolition Co-ordinating Committee Conference Call February 2, 2000.
Hi All,
Thanks for the minutes, Janet. We are being advised that the demonstration
should be on the opening day of the NPT--April 24th. I have written to Xanthe
about doing the press conference that day with the help of the pr firm we are
employing for Abolition 2000. I haven't heard back, but I just wanted to flag
this for the minutes which says that press conference would be on April 25th
and hope we can confer on the date. Regards, Alice

Subject: (abolition-usa) Trident2 Condemned in Scotland:New Protest
Police arrest 60 anti-nuclear protesters at submarine base
9.43 a.m. ET (1453 GMT) February 14, 2000
LOCHGOILHEAD, Scotland (AP) - Police arrested more than 60 people who
tried to blockade a nuclear submarine base Monday in a protest supported
by the actor Sir Sean Connery.
Anti-nuclear protesters began gathering at Faslane Naval Base, near
Lochgoilhead in western Scotland, early Monday to try to prevent workers
from entering the complex where Britain's Trident nuclear submarines are
based.
Protest organizers, the anti-nuclear group Trident Ploughshare, said up
to 400 protesters were involved, including two members of the European
Parliament as well as Scottish lawmakers and clergy. Police said more
than 60 people were arrested in two separate demonstrations at the main
entrances.
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament said Connery had given his support
to the one-day blockade. In a fax, the actor said he would be in Los
Angeles on Monday and could not attend, "But I am with you in spirit.''
The demonstration follows a ruling by Scottish Sheriff Margaret Gimblett
in October that the Trident system was illegal under international law
and attempts to "disarm'' it were justified. The Lord Advocate,
Scotland's senior law officer, has asked the High Court to review
Gimblett's decision.

EXCITING ORGANIZING OPPORTUNITY COMING UP!
February 14, 2000
Dear nuclear abolitionists:
What if a computer malfunction was to set off the events possibly =
resulting in a nuclear war?=20
This is the premise of Fail-Safe, a live TV drama re-make of Sydney =
Lumet's 1964 classic Cold War thriller, coming to CBS primetime on =
Sunday, April 9. Actor George Clooney of "ER" fame produces and stars, =
so the show is sure to be heavily promoted and watched by millions!
Project Abolition is issuing an action call to all US anti-nuclear =
activists to organize Fail-Safe house parties on April 9. =20
House parties are an excellent way to educate people in your community =
about the nuclear issue and recruit new members for your local activist =
group - or get one started. They provide a forum for nitty-gritty =
activism that larger events don't allow, and aid in the development of =
close bonds between organizers and potential new allies. We are all =
trying to build a bigger, stronger, more diverse movement for nuclear =
abolition in this country, and organizing hundreds of house parties in =
dozens of cities nationwide is a great way to grow.
If you have the ability and resources to organize on a larger scale, we =
encourage you to organize a Fail-Safe event at your local university, =
church, community center or any other prominent institution. We already =
have interest from the University of Notre Dame, Goshen College, =
Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, and the =
University of Maryland.=20
The Disarmament Clearinghouse and Project Abolition are producing a =
Fail-Safe House Party Organizing Kit which will give you all the =
information and helpful tips you need to organize and host a successful =
house party, generate local media interest, and produce political action =
(see ordering information below). If you ordered a House Party Kit for =
organizing around the 60 Minutes II documentary - and we're pleased to =
report 150 of you did -- please use that kit and we will send you a =
Fail-Safe supplement. (We had to call off the 60 Minutes II house party =
project due to repeated postponement of the broadcast date. The =
Fail-Safe drama provides a much better organizing vehicle, as it has a =
definite broadcast date and will attract lots more publicity and a far =
bigger audience.) The Kit contains a Fail-Safe flier, campaign =
materials, media tips, sample letters to the editor and your elected =
representatives, and a menu of actions you can urge people to take after =
they've watched the drama and heard the arguments for abolition. =20
Organizing kits should be ready by March 1, but don't wait until then to =
get started organizing your viewing party. Visit this webpage for a =
flier to help promote Fail Safe organizing: =
http://www.disarmament.org/george_clooney.htm.
Order your Fail-Safe House Party Organizing Kit today by contacting Joan =
or Kevin at the phone number or email address below. We'll mail it to =
you in early March.=20

Karina's Four-Star Thumbs-Up Movie Review:
Fail-Safe: A Computer Malfunction Starts Nuclear War in Sidney Lumet's =
1964 thriller starring Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau and Larry Hagman
=20
What if a computer malfunction was to set off the events possibly =
resulting in a nuclear war? This is the premise of Fail-Safe, as =
powerful, politically relevant and frightening today as it was in 1964.=20
=20
An alert is sounded at the United States' complex defense system in =
Omaha; an unidentified object is heading toward the US from the north =
and Strategic Air Command's bombers are routinely deployed to =
investigate. When the object is identified as an off-course airliner, =
the bombers are ordered back to base. But due to coincidental computer =
mishaps, they don't get the message and fly on toward their target: =
Moscow.
=20
The President is unable to convince the pilot to turn back - the pilots =
follow their training which instructs them to ignore all radio contact =
after receiving an order to strike, as the enemy could try to =
impersonate US commanders and even the US President. The President =
pleads with the Soviet Premier to understand that the attack is a =
mistake. In a painfully ironic turn of events, the Soviets and Americans =
briefly cooperate in a last-minute attempt to destroy the US nuclear =
bombers. But Moscow is destroyed and the President is faced with an =
appalling decision that will appease the Soviets and prevent World War =
III.
=20
Although I am an anti-nuclear activist, intimately familiar with the =
dangers of nuclear weapons and the insanity of keeping them on 24 hour =
"hair-trigger" alert, the film's honest and utterly bleak treatment =
shook me up and left me with a stomach ache. I urge you to rent the 1964 =
film, and to watch the April 9 George Clooney version. I believe the =
broadcasting of this disturbing drama will give nuclear abolitionists a =
great opportunity for raising the call for immediate and deep nuclear =
reductions leading to the complete elimination of these genocidal =
weapons.=20
