Wait a minute, I think we have slight factual problem here.
Major Barbara refers to GB Shaw's play in which Major Barbara is a Salvation
Army officer and his arms manufacturer was 'Andrew Undershaft.' Shaw made
out that there was some sort of coniving.
There used to be a conflict in Shaw's day between materialist socialism and
Christain socialism that the Salvation Army - once called the left hand of
the Chruch might exemplify. This is what Shaw was getting at in his play.
Materialism turned into Socialism with violence ie Bolshevism. This was in
the time frame of WW I and the days of the British Empire - long past.
Shaw's treatment of the matter was cynical and propagandistic.
The Salvation Army was the recipient in Moscow of US Desert Storm food
supplies only because the Bush administration was prepared to deliver it to
a reputable international organization that they understood. The officer in
Moscow at the time was a Swedish-American who offered to distribute it. I
know how much this gesture was appreciated in Moscow.
The Salvation Army is on record today as supporting World Peace, and
supporting the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons - on the basis of plain
Christian theology - just as Pope Jouhn Paul II does.
All spiritual leaders of every calling need to support the good principles
on which human spirituality and decency is based.
If you don't think they are doing the job - write or see them and ask why
not! Or better still - do something practical to help!
The Andrew Undershafts of this world are of course another problem, and
unfortunately, their motivation seems the same as in Victorian times. Sad to
recall - this is what laid the foundations of Marxism. Winston Churchill
worked with William Booth presenting as a result the world's first Welfare
State legislation to the British parliament around 1915.
I think the most important lesson is that a stupid game continues without
apparent a capacity of learning from mistakes of the past. You need only to
study the lessons of history to see where we are heading.
Winston Churchill was a very enlightened person. He received both Nobel
Prizes for both Peace and Literature. How interesting it would be to consult
Winston Churchill and William Booth today - and why not also Marx also since
his work as an economist may be out of favor currently, but who can speak
for the furture - if there is one?
This is why it is so important to learn from the lessons of history. Ours
may be times of last hope.
Ross Wilcock

Minutes July 1999.
At our meeting at the Hague we discussed the idea of identifying the Major
Barbaras of the world--ie arms merchants/researchers and, in particular the
nuclear people--who are making large profits from their activities and
subverting the democratic process via campaign contributions. How exactly
we would use the information may be a subject of discussion but perhaps at
the very least we could attempt to make known within their local environment
that this is what these folks, neighbors, etc are doing and that they should
be known -- in part -- for their creating this particular definition of
human being. (see Sartre). In any event, I wonder if folks support the
creation of such an annotated list and if so would they send me any info
they have to be added to such a list. Also, does anyone have some research
that would help ferret out the Corps and their CEOs names and information.
Perhaps we could be calling them as well as the Senators they influence on
call in days.

Hello to the fine people of the Abolition list serve,
I think the idea that Bob Kinsey just put out here is a great one.
The peace community needs to publicize the fact that these horrible
decisions to endanger humanity and squander resources are not beyond the
control of human intervention, but in fact the result of human
intervention.
Major Barbara #1 (in terms of nuclear weapons) is the Center for
Security Policy. Started in 1988 by Frank Gaffney (Reagan Pentagon
appointee) this think tank recieved over $2 million in corporate donations
from companies like Lockheed Martin and Boeing which profit from Star Wars.
The board members include 5 Lockheed Martin Execs, and Edward Teller. These
folks are the major power behind the Star Wars lobby.
I got this information from an article by William Hartung of the
World Policy Institute. I'm sure they have a lot of the information you
seek. I imagine Council for a Livable World also has a lot of information
on odious weapons merchants. Below are two lists: the top 100 military
contractors , and the top fifty nuclear contractors. Unfortunately they are
in a rather unweildy format, but it's a start. I hope this helps get the
project under way. I'd love to kept appraised of any developments of this.
Sincerely,
Andrew Page

Thanks, Ross. It's not clear to me where the details of the Salvation Army
have come in (I've been skimming recent e-mail fast), but on that subject: I
knew nothing about them except Christmas bell-ringing and used clothing
stores until recently. I have recently had the occasion to learn more and
have been thoroughly impressed with founder William Booth's lasting legacy
of organizing people who profess Christian beliefs to roll up their sleeves
and get out there on the streets and help people the system has left behind.
Their fairly standard Protestant Christian theology obviously isn't for
everyone, but my impression of their record of acting on human-solidarity
values is very, very favorable. If anyone is interested in efficiently
learning more there is a ??40-minute video history the Salvation Army
produced this year, narrated by Charles Osgood and Walter Cronkite
("Salvation Army 101"), that is wonderful -- I could try to get a copy for
you.
I mention this on this nuclear abolition list because I think that groups
like the Salvation Army are potential strong allies in our nuclear abolition
work, if we can find ways to link with them effectively. I think we're
somewhat stuck in the "usual suspects" loops of thinking and
communicating -- I've said this before: there is never going to be nuclear
abolition without a nuclear weapons convention and there is never going to
be a nuclear weapons convention without a 2/3 vote of the U.S. Senate
ratifying it. That is never going to happen unless nuclear abolition is a
thoroughly mainstream U.S. political idea. And, finally, THAT is never
going to happen unless nuclear abolition completely
transcends/ignores/defies the usual categories of left/right,
Republican/Democrat, socialist/capitalist, etc. The Salvation Army (and
many others) could help -- nuclear weapons are evil and a lot more people
and groups know that in their soul(s) than we sometimes let ourselves see.
At least that's my own strong personal view.

Thanks, Andrew. This kind of information is very helpful and should be
widely publicized. I do hope that when we think of "odious weapons
merchants" we keep in mind that many of the people who lead even the top
50-100 nuclear weapons contractors do not necessarily have very different
core values from those of us on this list. We need strategies that not only
"speak truth to power" but also keep ourselves open to the possibility that
engagement in dialogue in a spirit of nonviolence (i.e. not attacking them
personally as much as confronting them in ways that engage their own
reflection) with some of the most important people involved in these
corporations may bear important fruit. This is not only because the spirit
that we bring to our antinuclear work is crucial to our own integrity. I
also believe, for sheerly practical reasons, that if we approach this as a
"war" against this "enemy" we are not likely to "win" in the foreseeable
future, and nuclear abolition has special urgency, as we all understand.
"Hate the sin; love the sinner", or something like that.

Hello to the fine people of the Abolition list serve,
I think the idea that Bob Kinsey just put out here is a great one. The
peace community needs to publicize the fact that these horrible decisions to
endanger humanity and squander resources are not beyond the control of human
intervention, but in fact the result of human intervention.
Major Barbara #1 (in terms of nuclear weapons) is the Center for Security
Policy. Started in 1988 by Frank Gaffney (Reagan Pentagon appointee) this
think tank recieved over $2 million in corporate donations from companies
like Lockheed Martin and Boeing which profit from Star Wars. The board
members include 5 Lockheed Martin Execs, and Edward Teller. These folks are
the major power behind the Star Wars lobby.
I got this information from an article by William Hartung of the World
Policy Institute. I'm sure they have a lot of the information you seek. I
imagine Council for a Livable World also has a lot of information on odious
weapons merchants. Below are two lists: the top 100 military contractors ,
and the top fifty nuclear contractors. Unfortunately they are in a rather
unweildy format, but it's a start. I hope this helps get the project under
way. I'd love to kept appraised of any developments of this.
Sincerely,
Andrew Page
