  27. This message is for users of the NOAA/SEC Space
  28. Weather Operations sunspot region numbers. As you
  29. may have noticed, region number 10000 was assigned
  30. on June 14. Space Weather operations is going
  31. through the sequence of Region numbers as 9998,
  32. 9999, 0000, 0001, and so on. SEC's product text
  33. discussions of the active regions will ignore the
  34. leading zeroes (for example, we will say 'Region
  35. number 5' rather than Region number '0005'). However,
  36. the Geoalert product, the Region Report product, as
  37. well as the USAF and ISES data exchange codes will
  38. preserve the 4 digit format. The necessity of using
  39. four digits is for operational purposes only. For
  40. historical purposes all regions beyond Region 9999
  41. will be understood to be in a series of region numbers
  42. 10000 and higher.
