VMDP 2.0 Install Notes
VMDP 2.0 is required for Windows 7/2008/R2 VMs running on SLES 11 SP2.
VMDP 2.0 will also run on SLES 10 SP4 and SLES 11 SP1 but is not required.
- Installing VMDP in a Xen hosted Windows VM
A fresh install of VMDP in a Xen hosted Windows is basically the same as it was
before. Run setup.exe, accept the EULA, and follow the on-screen prompts. At
the end of the installation, a reboot is required.
- Upgrading VMDP 1.x to VMDP 2.0 on a Xen hosted Windows VM
Due to the architectural changes, upgrading to VMDP 2.0 is a two phased setup.
The first phase runs as before. Run setup.exe, accept the EULA, and follow the
on-screen prompts. At the end of phase one of the upgrade, a reboot is
required. When the VM boots back up, the second phase automatically starts and
finishes the upgrade. A reboot is required again.
- Installing VMDP 2.0 on a KVM hosted Windows VM
Setup.exe can be run with and without VirtIO devices present in the VM. If the
devices are present in the VM when setup is run, the drivers are installed and
loaded at that time. If the VirtIO devices are not present when setup is run,
shutdown the VM, add the VirtIO devices, and start the VM. Once booted,
Windows will discover the new devices and load the previously installed
drivers.
The main issue at present with the VirtIO drivers is how to boot on a VirtIO
disk. To do this, the VirtIO disk driver must be installed on a secondary/
temporary (e:) VirtIO disk. After the driver is installed and running on the
disk, shutdown the VM. From virt-manager, delete the secondary VirtIO disk
and delete the IDE boot disk. Now add a disk of type VirtIO and give it the
location for the boot disk. Boot the VM. The VirtIO disk driver will now
control the boot disk.
Failure to install the VirtIO disk driver on a secondary disk before changing
the boot disk to a VirtIO disk will cause the VM to crash with bug check 0x7b,
inaccessible boot disk.
- OEM SCSI driver installation
A virtual floppy disk (*.vfd) for Windows XP/2003 and an ISO image for
Windows 2008/R2/Win7 that contain the VirtIo block drivers have been created.
These can be used to install the VirtIo block drivers at Windows install time
on the boot disk.
For Windows XP/2003, you need to attach the virtual floppy to the VM before
starting the install and then press F6 when displayed. The F6 is at the very
beginning of the install.
For Windows 2008/R2/Win7, you need to attach the ISO as a second CD to the VM
before starting the install. On the ΓÇ£Where do you want to install WindowsΓÇ¥
screen, select ΓÇ£Load driverΓÇ¥.
