This program is a practical simulation and tutorial illustrating the methods that are used in measuring growth in bacteria in batch culture for use in science undergraduate courses. It was developed in March 1993 using the Asymetrix Toolbook authoring package. Particular emphasis has been placed on "user friendliness" in recognition that most students will use the program and will not have time to learn a complicated package. Undergraduates find the program "easy to use" and "beneficial to their studies".
Features - Elegant example of what can be achieved with Toolbook. The program is divided into six sections:
1. How to use the program. This explains to the novice user some of the features that will be
encountered in the program.
2. Aims of the program. A summary of the educational objectives.
3. Background information. This section acts as a tutorial and gives the user sufficient
information to complete the task.
4. Calibration of the nephalometer. This section allows the user to prepare a calibration curve
which is required to estimate the biomass during the growth experiments
5. Run experiment. This allows the user to run experiments that will provide the answers to a
number of questions about the exercise.
6. Data analysis. Experimental data obtained during the course of the simulation is displayed in
