  20. The CCITT recommends:
  21.  
  22.     -   that the first level of the synchronous digital hierarchy 
  23.         shall be 155 520 kbit/s;
  24.  
  25.     -   that higher synchronous digital hierarchy bit rates shall 
  26.         be obtained as integer multiples of the first level bit 
  27.         rate;
  28.  
  29.     -   that higher synchronous digital hierarchy levels should be 
  30.         denoted by the corresponding multiplication factor of the 
  31.         first level rate;
  32.  
  33.         that the bit rates 155 520 kbit/s (1st level), 
  34. 622 080 kbit/s (level 4) and 2 488 320 (level 16) should constitute 
  35. the synchronous digital hierarchy.
