  21. As the use of common channel Signalling System No. 7 increases, its 
  22. performance becomes increasingly important to the network and the 
  23. services it supports. Since problems in the signalling network can 
  24. affect the switched networks that it supports, and vice versa, network 
  25. managers must know the current status and performance of the common 
  26. channel signalling network, as well as the various user application 
  27. parts. Recommendation E.415 provides guidance on the requirements for 
  28. the surveillance of the status and performance of Signalling System 
  29. No. 7 signalling networks.

  31. Signalling System No. 7 uses signalling links for transfer of 
  32. signalling messages between exchanges or other nodes in the 
  33. telecommunication network served by the system. The system is designed 
  34. to ensure reliable transfer of signalling information in the presence 
  35. of transmission disturbances or signalling network failures. The 
  36. system may be provided with redundancy of signalling links and includes 
  37. functions for automatic diversion of signalling traffic to alternative 
  38. paths in case of link failures. (The Q.700-Series of Recommendations

  40. Signalling System No. 7).
