A straight flush is a hand containing all cards of the same suit and
in sequential order. A straight flush is the highest hand in poker
and can be beat only by a higher straight flush . A Royal Flush is a
straight flush headed by an ace. A player may play for a life time
and never see a straight flush, let alone be dealt one. Look closely
at the hands above. It will be a long time before you see another
like them.
Four of a kind is a hand in which a player holds 4 cards of the same
value. If two players have hands containing 4 of a kind, the player
having four of the highest kind is the winner, provided of course that
another player does not have a straight flush. In the above examples
the hand containing the four Queens beats the hand containing the four
6's.
A full house is a hand that contains 3 cards of one value and 2 cards
of another value. If two players hold full houses and no higher hand
is held by another player, the hand containing the biggest 3 of a kind
in the full house wins. In the above examples, Aces full beats deuces
full.
A full house is sometimes known as a crowded cabin or a full boat.
A flush is a hand containing cards that are all of the same suit, but
not in sequential order. If two players hold flushes and no higher
hand is held in the deal, the player having the highest card in the
flush wins. The King high flush above, for example, beats the eight
high flush.
A straight is a hand containing sequential cards of different suits.
If two or more straights are held in a given deal and no higher hand
is present, the straight headed by the highest card wins.
Three of a kind is a hand containing 3 cards of the same value. The
two remaining cards are of no value to the hand. If two players hold
three of a kind and no higher hand is held, then the player with the
largest 3 of a kind wins. The three 1O's above beat the three deuces.
Three of a kind is commonly referred to as trips in poker lingo.
Two pair is a hand containing a pair of cards of one value and a pair
of cards of another value. If two players hold 2 pair, then the
highest pair will beat the other hand. If two players have the same
high pair, then the higher second pair wins. If two players hold 2 of
the same pairs, then the fifth card is the tie breaker. In the
example above the A's and 8's beat the J's and 6's.
Two pair is a common poker hand and poker is sometimes called a game
of two pair.
One pair is a hand containing only two matching cards. If the hand
comes down to one pair against another one pair, the hand containing
the higher pair wins. If two players hold the same pair then the
highest card of the remaining 3 wins. If two hands have the same pair
and the same high card, then the next high card is the tie breaker,
and so on.
A high card hand is one that contains no pairs and mixed suits. If
two players hold the same high card, then the next higher card breaks
the tie and so on. This is the lowest hand in poker and rarely wins.
Occasionally a hand of 5 card stud will be won by an Ace or King high.
High card hands will rarely win in 5 card draw and a high card hand
will win in 7 card stud about as often as straight flushes are dealt.
