The purpose of the Captain's class is to acquaint the beginning poker
player with the basics of the game.
The mechanics of 5 card stud, 5 card draw, 7 card, and Texas hold 'em
along with elementary strategy for playing each game is available from
the other menu selections in this class.
This class, nor any other, will by itself make you a good poker
player. To develop poker sense or card sense requires playing and
observing many, many hands.
After completing this short course, you may play as many hands at the
Friday Night Poker Club as you desire. In a few evenings of play at
the Club, you will see more hands than most players see in a life
time.
The recommended steps for a beginning poker player are as follows:
1. Complete this introduction.
2. Select What's high from the menu and learn the hands.
3. Select 5 card stud, 5 card draw, 7 card stud, and Texas Hold 'em
from the menu and learn about each game, observing several hands
in the process.
4. Play in the Practice mode and ask for my advice frequently
5. Play in the Practice mode and only ask for advice when uncertain
about a given hand or to double check your decision. Don't be
afraid to exercise you own judgement. I am not always right.
6. Play in the Practice mode and never ask advice, only look at the
other player's hand at the end of each deal.
7. Play in the Normal mode and see how you fare.
On a given night, even a beginner can win with a run of good luck.

The game of poker is played with a standard 52 card deck of playing
cards.
There are many varieties of games that may be played. Four games are
allowed at the Friday Night Poker Club. These are 5 card stud, 5 card
draw, 7 card stud, and Texas hold 'em. No wild cards are allowed in
any of the games.
You may elect to play only one of the above games or you may play
dealer's choice. When playing dealer's choice, the dealer picks the
game to be played from one of the 4 above games.
The object of poker is to deal the cards and then bet on whether your
hand is the best of the deal. The number of bets and sequence of
betting is different with each game and is explained during the
discussion of each of the 4 games.
The hand usually begins with an Ante. Each player antes up a
specified amount to start the pot before each deal.
The amount of money each player begins the game is known as the
takeout.
There are three tables at the Friday Night Poker Club from which to
choose. The $5 limit table has a maximum bet of $5, an ante of $1 per
player, and a takeout of $250. The minimum bet at all tables is the
amount of the ante. The $10 limit table has a maximum bet of $10 , an
ante of $2 per player, and a takeout of $500. The pot limit table has
a maximum bet equal to the amount of money in the pot at the time a
player places a bet. A bet of $10,000 or more is possible at this
table, although bets this large are rarely placed. At the pot limit
table, each player antes $10 and the takeout is $5,000.
You selected a table before entering this class. All hands observed
during this class will be at the table you requested. You may later
come back to the Capt's class and observe the other tables in play.
When you have completed the class and wish to play poker, select "Main
menu" and then select "Play poker". You may again select the table at
which you wish to play.
If you are a novice, I suggest you start at the $5 limit table and
work your way up to the pot limit table.
