Welcome to the Dungeon Quest Fantasy Adventure. In this Dungeon, you will
find many kinds of roaming monsters. Your job is to clear all 8 levels of
Dungeon without getting killed. Many forms of Magic exist within the Dungeon,
so make the best use of it during your Quest.
This Test Drive has two limitations:
1) You can not leave the 1st level.
2) You do not get any sound effects.
This Fantasy Adventure took 6 months to create. If you enjoy playing it,
then register your copy.
Disclaimer
----------
This program is provided "AS IS" and it is without warranty of any kind that
it will work correctly in any or all situations. No liability shall be
assumed for direct or consequential damage caused by the use of this software.
The only claim that is made is that there are no intentional bugs or fatal
errors in any original copy of the program that you received directly from
the author.
Hardware Requirements
---------------------
You must have a EGA or VGA adapter card and a matching color monitor. You
also need a minimum of 640K RAM to run the game. You can play from a single
360K floppy, but for faster response--install the game on a hard disk.
User Input
----------
This game is designed to use a Mouse as the primary input device. Keyboard
input is acceptable. But for ease of use we suggest you use a Mouse. Just
point the Mouse pointer at any icon or meun item and "CLICK IT" to select it.
This works even where function key names are displayed on a meun list.
Utility Menu
------------
This menu is first accessed when your start the game or when you press the
Crescent Moon from the play screen. It provides access to the following
functions:
F1: Create A New Hero
F2: Load Saved Game
F3: Save My Game
F4: Continue
F5: Quit
When you first enter the game you must choose between creating a new Hero or
loading a saved game before you can progress to the play screen. If you load
a previously saved game, then that game is restored and you are advanced to
the play screen. If you choose to create a new Hero, you advance to the New
Hero menu.
CREATE A NEW HERO
-----------------
Use this menu to create Hero that best suites your personality. I suggest
that you create a strong hero. Weak ones don't seem to last long in the
dungeon. Choose from the following options to create your Hero:
F1: Paladin
F2: Fighter
F3: Mage
F4: Dwarf
F5: Elf
F6: Halfling
F7: Human
F8: Sex (M/F)
F9: Roll Status
ESC: Done
Here is a brief description of each of your hero's characteristics as defined
in general D&D terminology:
Character Classes
-----------------
Paladin - can fight with armor, weapon, magic items or spell.
Fighter - can fight with armor or weapons. Magic items are restricted
to Scrolls, Potions and Wands.
Mage - can use any magic item or spell. Weapons are restricted to
use of the Dagger. Mages can only use magic armor.
Character Race
--------------
Dwarf - are short, stubborn and rough. They have the longest life
span of any of the races and make good Paladins, Fighters
or Mages.
Elf - are tall, arrogant, and long-lived. They are the weakest of
the races and tend to die off at the first sign of trouble.
They make good Mages. I suggest you avoid this race unless
you want a real challenge.
Halfling - are short and long-lived. They are a cross between an Elf and
a Humans. They make good Paladins or Mages.
Human - are tall and rough. They are not as strong as Dwarfs,
but make good Paladins, Fighters or Mages.
Attributes
----------
Sex - choose Male or Female.
Status - re-rolls character stats until you are happy with them.
HERO STATUS DISPLAY
-------------------
As you adventure in the dungeon, your Hero statistics are display for you to
review. You should constantly monitor your Hero's stats, for they are the
key to survival in the dungeon. Here is a breakdown of the stats used in
Dungeon Quest and their meaning:
Dungeon Level
-------------
There are 8 levels in the dungeon. Each is assigned a color starting
with red (the easiest) and progressing through Orange, Yellow, Green,
Blue, Violet, Gray and White (the hardest). For the most part, the
higher the level, the more ferocious the monster are.
Class
-----
There are 3 types of class. They are Paladin, Fighter, and Mage.
Race
----
There are 4 types of race. They are Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, and Human.
Sex & Age
---------
Sex can be Male or Female. Age is the current "age" of your hero.
Status
------
There are 5 status messages that are displayed depending on the amount
of damage that your hero has received. They are Good Health, Hurt,
Bleeding, Dying, and Dead.
AC - Armor Class
----------------
This is a rating of how difficult your hero is to damage. The lower the
AC value the more difficult he is to hit. Use armor and shield to
lower this value as much as possible.
HP - Hit Points
---------------
This is a measure of how healthy your hero is. Damage from monsters is
subtracted from the total. When your hero loses all his hit points, he
is dead. Use magic potions and the "camping" icon to restore your
hero's health and hit points.
MP - Magic Points
-----------------
This is a measure of how much magic your hero has available to cast
spells with. Each time a spell is cast the "weight" of the spell is
subtracted from the total. If this value reaches ZERO, then your hero
can not cast anymore spells. Use magic potions and the "camping" icon
to restore your hero's health and magic points.
DAM - Damage
------------
This is a measure of the "damage range" that the weapon your hero is
using will do if it makes contact with a monster in battle. For
example, a value of 2D8+4 means 2 dice of 8 sides plus 4 bonus points.
In this case, the weapon yields between 6 and 20 damage points.
LEV - Level
-----------
This is a measure of how experienced your hero is. Each time your hero
advances a level in experience, he receives an increase to his HP, MP,
and STR values.
EXP - Experience
----------------
Every time your hero kills a monster in battle, he gains experience
points. When your hero gains enough experience he can gain a level.
ENC - Encumbrance
-----------------
This is a measure of how much "stuff" your hero can collect and carry
with him through the dungeon. Items in the dungeon have weight and when
the total weight of the items you carry reaches your encumbrance limit
you won't be able to pick-up anything else until you drop something.
STR - Strength
--------------
This is a measure of the physical power of your hero. The higher your
hero's strength, the more likely he is to damage a monster in combat.
Your hero can also receive bonus STR, ENC, and THAC0 when his STR is
greater then fifteen.
INT - Intelligence
------------------
This is a measure of how well your hero can learn and use magic. The
higher your hero's intelligence, the more effective his magic spells
will be.
WIS - Wisdom
------------
This is a measure of how well your hero understands the ways of the
world and interacts with it.
DEX - Dexterity
---------------
This is a measure of the manual dexterity and agility of your hero. It
is essential that Mages have a high dexterity value.
CON - Constitution
------------------
This is a measure of the overall health of your hero.
CHA - Charisma
--------------
This is a measure of how others react to your hero. It is sometimes a
factor when your hero has a non-lethal encounter in the dungeon.
ICONS
-----
The icon map is the main playing interface to the game. Proper use of the map
is essential to a successful journey in the dungeon. Here are just a few
examples of what you can do with the icon map:
Issue Commands 2D Map View
Select Weapons Inventory List
Cast Magic Spells Drop Items
As your journey progresses, different colored "activity" boxes will appear
around the icons on the screen to let you know which icons are active at that
time. If a BLUE highlight appears around an icon, it means that you can use
that icon at that time. If a WHITE highlight appears around an icon, it means
that you have selected that icon and it is active. For example, a WHITE box
appears around the torch icon to indicates you are holding a torch as your
light source to see by.
Crescent Moon (Esc)
-----------------------

or just quit when you are done adventuring. SPECIAL NOTE: This icon
does not need to be highlighted to be used.

About Shareware...
------------------
Shareware (also known as user supported software and other names) is a
concept not understood by everyone. The authors of Shareware retain all
rights to the software under the copyright laws while still allowing
free distribution. This gives the user the chance to freely obtain and
try out software to see if it fits his needs. Shareware should not be
confused with Public Domain software even though they are often obtained
from the same sources.
If you continue to use Shareware after trying it out, you are expected
to register your use with the author and pay a registration fee. What
you get in return depends on the author, but may include a printed
manual, free updates, telephone support, etc. Only by paying for the
Shareware you use do you enable the Shareware author to continue to
support his software and create new programs. Considering that the
Shareware registration fees are almost always far less than the purchase
price of comparable commercial software it's obvious that Shareware is a
good deal for everyone.
There are real advantages to you in the Shareware system. You get to
try out software to make sure it is compatible with your hardware and
that it fits your needs before you "buy" it with your registration.
The author saves the expense of advertising, packaging and distribution
and passes the savings on to you. Plus, most Shareware authors are
much more accessible than commercial software sources so that your
questions and suggestions are much more likely to be responded to.
