**** BEFORE USING XtreePro Gold ****
Before you attempt to use XTreePro Gold, you should do the following:
o In order to be eligible for technical support and future
program updates, please sign the enclosed License Agreement and
send it to XTree Company.
o As with any new software package you receive, make sure to make
a copy of the distribution disk(s). Use the copy when you need
to install or re-install XTreePro Gold, and save the original
diskette(s) so you can exchange it for future software updates.
o You must use the INSTALL program to decompress and copy the
XTreePro Gold program files to a directory on your hard disk.
The "GETTING STARTED" section in the manual discusses these procedures
in more detail.
**** XTreePro Gold DISTRIBUTION DISKS ****
In your XTreePro Gold package there are two 5.25" distribution
diskettes and one 3.5" diskette. Use whichever medium is appropriate
for your system. The following files are on the diskette(s):

After Installation, if you want to conserve space on your hard disk,
you can delete files for functions that you do not intend to use. For
example, if you are an experienced user, you can delete the XTG_HELP.*
files. This will free up 120K disk space, at the expense of disabling
Help.
The XTGOLD.COM and XTG.EXE files are required for proper XTreePro Gold
operation.
**** ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO THE MANUAL ****
1. Archive Manager
a. To clarify the three archiving Methods in the CTRL/F5 command:
Archive - Unconditionally adds each tagged file to the archive.
If the file already exists in the archive, it is always
replaced with the tagged file.
Update - Adds each tagged file that doesn't already exist in the
archive. Replaces an existing file in the archive if the
corresponding tagged file has a newer date.
Freshen - Same as update, but does NOT add tagged files that don't
already exist in the archive.
b. Additional File Commands from an open Archive:
Print - This command can be used to print a catalog of the files
contained in the Archive.
View - You can view a file that is contained in the Archive;
however, the formatted viewers are not available.
2. The Alt/F8 command works as documented in the manual. However, it
has been moved to the Ctrl File menu since it is concerned with tagged
operations. You can use either Ctrl/F8 or Alt/F8 to execute the
"partial untag" command.
3. A new command line option (/Vd:\path\filename) has been added to
XTree Gold to facilitate logging the tree and files of large static
disk volumes such as removable cartridges and CD-ROMS.
Whenever you quit XTree Gold via the Alt/Zip command, the currently
logged directory and file information is always saved in a special file
called "XTGOLD.TMP". Whenever XTree Gold starts it looks for
XTGOLD.TMP, uses the information to provide for an instant startup, and
then deletes the XTGOLD.TMP file.
The /V option tells XTree Gold to read the initial startup information
from a different file, overriding the default XTGOLD.TMP. You create
this startup file by having previously quit via Alt/Zip, and then
renaming the XTGOLD.TMP file to some other file name (i.e. the name you
will be specifying with the /V option). /V does NOT change the name of
the file written to when quitting via Alt/Zip (this is always
XTGOLD.TMP), only the name of the file read at startup.
As an example, let's say Gold is installed in directory C:\XTGOLD,
and you have a CD-ROM drive "R:". The following batch file could be
used to whenever you need to access the tree and files that are on
the CD-ROM:
1: C:\XTGOLD\XTGOLD R: /VC:\XTGOLD\CDROM.DAT
2: IF NOT EXIST C:\XTGOLD\XTGOLD.TMP GOTO DONE
3: IF EXIST C:\XTGOLD\CDROM.DAT DEL C:\XTGOLD\CDROM.DAT
4: REN C:\XTGOLD\XTGOLD.TMP CDROM.DAT
5: :DONE
Line by line explanation:
1: Run XTree Gold, telling it to use CDROM.DAT for the startup
data. If XTree Gold cannot find this file, drive R: will be logged
as normal.
2: If the file XTGOLD.TMP was NOT created, then we must have used
the standard Quit command to exit XTree Gold, and we are done.
3: We come here if we used Alt/Zip to exit XTree Gold. Delete the
CDROM.DAT file, because we are going to re-create it.
4: Change the name of the XTGOLD.TMP file (just created via the
Alt/Zip) to CDROM.DAT.
5: (:DONE) this is where "GOTO DONE" comes
The first time you run the batch file, Gold will not find CDROM.DAT
and will fully log drive R: as normal. Exit Gold with Alt/Zip right
away. This will create XTGOLD.TMP which will contain a directory of
the logged volume. The batch file saves XTGOLD.TMP as the file
CDROM.DAT. Now, whenever you run the batch file again, CDROM.DAT
will be used as the startup file and you will have instant logging!
**** MISCELLANEOUS TIPS AND HINTS ****
1. During the operation of XTreePro Gold, there may be occasions when
DOS or TSR programs display unwanted information on your screen.
Pressing F2 from the Directory or File window re-displays the entire
XTree Gold screen.
F2 can also be handy from the CTRL/Showall display. If you have
untagged some of the files in CTRL/Showall, pressing F2 will condense
the list, and show only the currently tagged files.
2. You can use an undocumented command line switch (/E) to cause the
program to bypass the "Missing overlay" error prompt when an overlay is
not found. This can be handy if you delete some of the XTreePro Gold
overlay files to conserve disk space. If you use the /E switch, the
program will beep once to remind you that the requested overlay has not
been found, but will not display an error message and force you to
press a key.
3. Pressing ALT-F9 from the Directory Window toggles the program
between 25-line and EGA/VGA-43/51 line modes. This option is available
via the configuration program or the /43 command line switch, but you
may find it handy once you are inside the program.
4. As stated in the manual, using the Alt/F8 (or Ctrl/F8 which is NOT
stated in the manual) "partial untag" command from a file display after
cancelling a mass (Ctrl/File) operation untags the files that have
already been operated upon. This allows you to continue any tagged
function when you cancel it by pressing ESC. For example:
Let's say you tagged 500 files on hard drive C: and are ALT-Copying
them to hard disk D:. About half way through, D: fills up and you
are sitting at the DESTINATION DISK FULL prompt. After scratching
your head for a second you remember that there is a bunch of stuff
on drive D: that can be deleted.
1. Press ESC to cancel the copy
2. Log drive D:
3. Delete unwanted files on D:
4. Press the plus (+) key to switch back to drive C:
5. Ctrl-Showall tagged files
6. Press Ctrl/F8 to untag the files that have already been
copied.
You can now continue the copy by pressing ALT-C, ENTER, ENTER.
5. The Alt/F3 Relog Directory command can be handy when running
application programs from Gold. Relog re-reads the file information
for the current directory only, allowing you to instantly refresh the
file display after making changes to the disk with the eXecute command
or by running a program from the Application Menu, or by using Open.
However, if you made or deleted any directories, it's usually better to
relog the entire disk. (This will keep the tree on the screen
accurate.)
**** VERSION HISTORY ****
