  10. After a day of desperate fighting (the villages around Gorschen changed hands several times) the battle ended with 
  11. the opposing armies in roughly the same positions in which they had started. The French had suffered heavier losses 
  12. but by nightfall they had wrested the initiative from the Allies and their army was now concentrated. The Allies 
  13. retreated to Dresden (and then to Bautzen), the French did little to stop them. The opportunity for a swift end to 
  14. the 1813 campaign had passed.
