  9. The French won a fairly comfortable victory and the Allied left was all but destroyed. The French effort to crush 
  10. the Allied right was checked but with the possibility of Vandamme intervening the Allies decided to retreat back 
  11. to Bohemia. The exhausted French let them go, waiting for Vandamme to 'finish the job'. He came close to cutting 
  12. off the Allied retreat but a combination of accidents and Allied initiative and gallantry ended up with him being 
  13. cut off from the rest of the French army, surrounded and all but destroyed in a 2 day battle around Kulm (29 - 30 
  14. August). Vandamme himself was taken prisoner. At a stroke the French success at Dresden was wiped out and Napoleon 
  15. was back to square one.
