[Help GT40]
THE DEC GT40 AND OMNIGRAPH
THE REFRESH-TYPE CRT DISPLAY CALLED THE GT40 HAS BEEN
INCLUDED IN THE NIH OMNIGRAPH DISPLAY SYSTEM, AND OPERATES IN A
MANNER SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE DEC 340 AND A STORAGE TUBE CRT.
SPECIFICALLY:
1. THE GT40 DOES NOT REQUIRE A HIGH (SECOND) SEGMENT.
2. POST/UNPOST/APPEND/KILL ARE IMMEDIATE UNLIKE STORAGE TUBES.
3. THERE ARE 8 LEVELS OF INTENSITY, BUT ONLY ONE CHAR SIZE.
4. THERE ARE 4 VECTOR-TYPES, ITALICS, AND HARDWARE BLINK!!!
THIS IS IMPLEMENTED IN OMNIGRAPH VIA A NEW ROUTINE: DSTAT(I)
WHERE THE USER CAN CONTROL EACH FEATURE INDEPENDENTLY
BY PASSING A SIGNED INTEGER I EQUAL TO THE SUMMATION OF
VARIOUS INTEGERS CHOSEN FROM THE FOLLOWING:
IF YOU WISH TO USE A LINE TYPE OTHER THAN THE
DEFAULT (SOLID LINES),
I=1 SET SOLID-LINE TYPE
I=2 SET SHORT-VECTOR TYPE
I=3 SET LONG-DASH TYPE
I=4 SET DOT-DASH TYPE
PLUS, IF YOU WISH TO START HARDWARE BLINK AND/OR ITALICS,
I=8 SET BLINK (APPLIES TO TEXT, POINTS AND LINES)
I=16 SET ITALICS
HENCE, A POSITIVE VALUE OF, SAY, 11 (8+3) MEANS BLINK AND LINE
TYPE=LONG-DASH. SIMILARLY, 28 WOULD IMPLY ITALICS, BLINKING
AND DOT-DASH LINES.
YOU CAN RESET TO THE DEFAULT STATUS (NO ITALICS, NO BLINKING,
AND SOLID LINES) BY PASSING A VALUE OF 0.
FINALLY, YOU CAN RESET AN INDIVIDUAL FEATURE OR SOME COMBINATIONS
BY PASSING A NEGATIVE VALUE. FOR EXAMPLE, A VALUE OF -8
WOULD RESET TO NO BLINKING WITHOUT AFFECTING ITALICS OR LINE
TYPE. HOWEVER, SINCE THE CHOICE OF LINE TYPES IS NOT BINARY,
AN INTEGER VALUE IMPLYING -1 THROUGH -4 WILL CAUSE THE LINE TYPE
TO BE RESET TO SOLID (E.G., -17 IMPLIES NO MORE ITALICS AND
RESET TO SOLID).
FINALLY NOTE THAT DSTAT IS A NO-OP ON OTHER DISPLAYS.
5. THE GT40 HAS A CAPACITY FOR 1400 INCHES OF VECTORS (MOVES
AND DRAWS) FLICKER-FREE. THIS IS CONSIDERABLY GREATER THAN
THAT OF THE DEC 340. HOWEVER, THE GT40'S CORE PERMITS UP
TO 7000 SHORT VECTORS (LESS THAN A HALF INCH) OR 3500 LONG
VECTORS, SO THAT SEVERE FLICKER IS POSSIBLE.
6. THE GT40 IS INITIATED BY THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:
POWER ON
SET SWITCHES 15,14,13,11, AND 10 TO THE UP POSITION
DEPRESS THE HALT SWITCH, THEN THE LOAD ADDRESS SWITCH,
RAISE THE HALT SWITCH BACK TO THE ENABLE POSITION,
RESET SWITCHES 15,14,13,11,10 TO THE DOWN POSITION,
AND FINALLY HIT THE START SWITCH.
TYPE ^C (YOU MAY HAVE TO BE PATIENT UNTIL SCREEN WARMS UP)
LOG IN AS USUAL AND WHEN IN MONITOR STATE, TYPE BOOTGT<CR>
WHEH "FILE:" IS PRINTED, TYPE SYS:GTOMNI<CR>
DON'T TYPE ANYTHING ELSE!!!!
WHEN YOU SEE THE CURSOR IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER AND THE
WORD "GTOMNI" IN THE UPPER RIGHT, YOU CAN USE THE DEVICE AS
ANY OTHER TERMINAL.
7. IF STRANGE OCCURRENCES ARISE, YOU CAN FORCE A MANUAL
RESET OF THE GT40 MONITOR BY MOMENTARILY RAISING SWITCH 15.
THIS IS USEFUL IN DELETING ALL PICTURES INADVERTENTLY LEFT
WITHIN THE GT40 CORE.
8. IN THE OMNIGRAPH CALL TO DINI, REFER TO <GT40> OR <5>.
9. YOU MAY "TYPE AHEAD" WITH THIS GT40 MONITOR.
FOR A DESCRIPTION OF THE GT40 MONITOR "GTOMNI," TYPE
"HELP GTOMNI".
