in Mah Jongg -V-G-A- Version 2.1
A new features summary for current users of MJVGA Version 2.0.
The Mah Jongg -V-G-A- program and documentation are
Copyright 1989 Ron Balewski
Release 2.1 of Mah Jongg -V-G-A- is primarily a maintenance
upgrade. There's really only one new "feature". The most important
difference between versions 2.0 and 2.1 is the naming and handling of
tile files. Version 2.0 stored each tile as a separate file,
requiring 44 files named V00.ICN thru V43.ICN. A color palette
configuration file (PAL.CFG) was also required. Version 2.1 gives you
the option to store all the tiles and their palette in one file or to
keep and use individual files like version 2.0 and earlier.
Both formats have advantages and disadvantages. Some of them
are:
MULTIPLE FILE ADVANTAGES
------------------------
-> Easy to trade and replace individual tiles within a set. With one
file, you can't replace just one tile with, say, a nicer one that
your friend drew.
-> Easy to "restore" one tile if it becomes damaged without losing any
other (possibly customized) tiles.
SINGLE FILE ADVANTAGES
----------------------
-> Faster loading. DOS doesn't have to look for and open a large
number of files. The added speed will be most noticeable when the
game's run from a floppy disk, since floppies provide much slower
access to begin with.
-> Saves space. Due to how space is allocated on a disk, a file will
(almost) always waste some amount of space. The average amount of
space wasted doesn't depend on the size of the file -- it depends on
the structure of the disk drive. Therefore, one large file will
always be more efficient than a large number of small files.
Two utilities are provided (PAKTIL.COM and UNPAKTIL.COM) to
convert between single and multiple file formats. Please read
UTILITY.DOC for complete details of these two programs.
Note that only MJVGA21 will recognize the single file tileset
format. The Draftsman REQUIRES you to work with a set of individual
tiles. Of course, once you modify the tiles, you can easily
re-combine them into a single tileset file.
NEW TILE NAMING CONVENTIONS
---------------------------
MJVGA 2.1 and it's version of The Draftsman uses a slightly
different system to name files. I'd like to take a minute to discuss
the new naming conventions.
The individual tile files are named V00.TIL thru V43.TIL (they
used to be V00.ICN thru V43.ICN). The palette file is still called
PAL.CFG.
The new tileset file (containing all 44 tiles and a palette file)
is named Vnn.TIS, where the nn can be replaced by any two digit number
from 01 to 99. This lets you have up to 99 different tilesets in the
Mah Jongg subdirectory (with individual tiles, each subdirectory could
hold only one set).
MJVGA21 can be told which tileset to load from the command line
via the "L" parameter. For example, "MJVGA21 L03" will load tileset
file V03.TIS.
MJVGA21 can also be instructed to load individual tiles by
including "I" on the command line. For example, "MJVGA21 I" will load
whichever collection of individual .TIL files is in the current
directory. This is an excellent way to "play-test" a set of tiles
that you may be working on with The Draftsman.
COMPATIBILITY WITH OLD TILE SETS
--------------------------------
If you've just finished a set of tiles using MJVGA20 and it's
Draftsman, don't worry! All the tiles are the same except for the
extension. To convert a set of tiles with the .ICN extension to a set
with the .TIL extension, just type:
REN *.ICN *.TIL
at the DOS prompt. THis will change all the old extensions to the new
one. You can then continue editing the tiles with MJVGA21's Draftsman
or package them into a tileset woth PAKTIL.
THE NEW FEATURE
---------------
The only new "user" feature of MJVGA21 is an X-ray view added to
the HELP menu.
To begin an X-ray, just select "X-Ray" from the help menu. Next,
choose which tile the X-ray should look for. The selected tile is shown
in the upper left section of the screen. Just step thru the tiles by
clocking on the Next or Previous button (or by clicking the center or
right mouse button) until the desired tile appears.
Then click on "SHOOT IT!" to turn on the X-ray machine. The
tiles on top of the stacks containing the selected tile will become
highlighted. All other tiles will grow dark and begin to flicker.
You'll also hear an irritating, high-pitched tone (I never said X-ray
machines were silent).
From this X-ray, you'll be able to tell which stacks the tiles
are in, but NOT how deeply they're buried. If they're on top, of
course, you'll see them. But otherwise, you'll have to dig!!
To turn off the X-ray machine , just click any mouse button. You
can then X-ray for a different tile or return to the game by selecting
"Exit".
MENU SWITCH
-----------
MJVGA21 also contains a "menu switch" which will let you hide the
list of menu choices. Just click anywhere in the "Mah Jongg -V-G-A-"
title to hide the menu. Clicking there a second time will restore the
menu list.
When the menu list is hidden, all functions are turned off except
for "HELP". You can still access HELP by clicking the center mouse
button.
