Things missing from the update that would have been appreciated:
TrueType support (i.e., support for modern system font servers).
Modern printing-system integration.
Option for 1200 dpi screen rendering.
Modern C library calls.
Direct PDF export.
Import/export, if not outright adoption, of the OASIS XML-based file format
Import/export of post-Word97 MS-Word documents.
Menu shortcuts that don't break when Caps Lock or Num Lock are on.
Support for WP 8.1's other languages (Dutch, German, Italian, Spanish).
Optional support for the open-source, well-maintained aspell spelling checker.
A better-looking graphics toolkit than Motif (e.g., GTK+, Qt, wxWidgets).

Hello,
I've been using WP since 1993 (version 5.1 for Windows) and still am
fond of many of its capabilites. The upcoming new libraries-compatible
WP8.1 is a move in a good direction. Having lost money on WPO2K for
Linux and on Corel shares likewise, and having seen the misfortunes and
marketing difficulties of WP over the years, I think native WP for Linux
will be difficult to market on a broader scale unless certain features
can be found in the product. Among these I would find necessary
- easy integration into KDE and perhaps GNOME by which I mean
- address book integration - mail merges from the KDE address book
(which now in version 3.2 even sports a hook for a dialer program, and
Kall does what the dialer in CAB did) must become possible. At least
easy to use import-export filters for conversion of the CSV files to and
from a native Linux WP address book are paramount, if, e.g., the KDE
address book and/or Evolution cannot be used directly.
- integration with open source mail clients. The German govt., e.g., has
sponsored the development of secure mailing. Instead of resuscitating a
long forgotten Corel PIM or starting from scratch with too little
resources, why not make it integrate with Kmail, Mozilla, Sylpheed, and
the like. See http://www.gnupg.org/aegypten/ for a glimpse on where
public funding has already gone. Kaddressbook is explicitly supported by
this project.
- import and export filters that work more or less perfectly with
OpenOffice and M$ word as the main word processing competitors and that
can be updated as free or low cost plugins.
- code pages for all important and perhaps also not so widespread
languages (I second the extensive cross platform and therefore also
cross culture advantage in older WP versions mentioned by one listmember
above - perhaps some internationalization packages from open source
projects like Mozilla could be utilized for menus?)
- automatic discrimination between *nix saved ASCII files and Windows
saved ASCII files
- I wonder whether leaving the *.wpd file format behind would cripple
the typesetting features sorely lacking in AbiWord and OOWriter (perhaps
lacking - I haven't used OO extensively yet, it is so slow on my Duron
900 system). It might also cripple other features, so perhaps there
still is a place for a closed file format. I doubt that all the great
sophisticated features of WP will ever become part of OO and/or AbiWord.
Is it possible for example to have a box in a box using XML format? This
is how I created business cards with a very nice layout in WP. Or will
we see a macro language like WP's anytime soon in OO? For converting
footnotes into endnotes and vice versa?
- integration of CUPS so that creating PDFs becomes a one click task for
average users
- a more modern file opening dialogue
- a preview function
- easy data exchange with spreadsheets like gnumeric or OOCalc. I don't
see QuattroPro as a native Linux application anytime soon, and we all
know how many service packs always were needed to squash the worst bugs
in the Windows versions that have had and have a much bigger user base
giving more feedback than a Linux version could yield for a long time.
- integrating and displaying TTFs
- minor eye candy improvements to make it look more up to date (a
rewrite an QT or GTK would perhaps be to much to be asked for)
Provided these or a good part of these items from my improvised wishlist
can be made working, in India or whereever, native WP8, or then WP1* for
Linux could be marketed aggressively in the academic, law, and perhaps
governmental fields where firms and organizations need a more decent
wordprocessor than those available on Linux desktops. The word might
spread, and its speed and superiority to OO in many aspects could entice
many users.
What do you all think?
Best regards from Vienna,
Andreas von Heydwolff

There clearly *is* a market for the old WordPerfect 8.x for X (on
UNIX/Linux) if the price is right. But this is just a niche product.
If it is available for like $50.00 they will sell some.
I'm not sure what their plans are, but the previous management's rapid
release of several new versions of WordPerfect Office for Windows isn't
what they need with Linux. A Linux word processor doesn't need to be a
Swiss Army Knife. It just needs to be an excellent word processor.
Linux users will use other tools to do other jobs -- that is the UNIX
way of doing things. I doubt that UNIX users would use WordPerfect to
compose HTML.
I can't see any features that are lacking in WordPerfect 8.x for X. It
could use some improvement. First, they need to see that everything
works or if they are unnecessary they could be removed (i.e. HTML
editing). It would be better if it had 1200 DPI like the Windows
versions -- actually it would be better if you could choose your
resolution for page layout (at least the common resolutions or 2^N*72
and 2^N*75 would be sufficient.
The printing system needs to be converted to PostScript ONLY and it
should use PPD files for configuration. The font system should be
changed to directly use the X font (old) system or FontConfig. This
would permit a lot of printing and font stuff to be removed because it
would be redundant. I would keep the ability to override the auto
detect for Bold and Italic until that could be fixed/replaced. They
should also add the ability to configure font embedding on a per font
basis (like Scribus) and to make fonts invisible on a per font basis
(everything needs this :-D). It should be able to embed TrueType fonts
as scalable (outline) Type42 fonts.
Such a product would be competitive with what is available for Linux
even if you had to install old libraries -- UNIX uses hundreds of
libraries, a few more won't matter. I think that what was being sold on
e-Bay as 8.2 included all of the needed libraries.
If they could update it to use FontConfig, FreeType2, and Xft[2] (for
display and TrueType fonts) and the current version of GLibc, they they
would a product that would be competitive with Word for Windows for
applications where people only did word processing. There are a lot of
business seats that only do word processing.
Also, on Linux direct export (print) to PDF, and PS & PDF import are
much more important than filters to import/export anything but RTF.
The next major version should use the OASIS file format.

> And remember what else Yogi said. "IF YOU COME TO A FORK IN THE ROAD,

Perhaps they are going to fix the font rasterization and have WP8
installation conform to the latest LSB standard. It would help it have
the widest possible customer base.
Just my two cents.
