COMMENT:An introduction to the philosophy of science, suitable for beginners.
COMMENT:Discusses and criticizes well-known positions on scientific method and theory change such as empiricism/inductivism, Popper's falsificationism, "Kuhnism" (for want of a better word); as well as discussing the theories of two major but less famous figures in the philosophy of science, Lakatos and Feyeraband. Useful to get a feel for philosophical debates over rationality vs. relativism, objectivism, realism, instrumentalism and truth. Chalmers also gives his own account of theory change in science, which is based on a modification of Lakatos's theory.
