COMMENT:An account of Loftus's experience with false memories, particularly as they play out in the public arena. This is a popular book with not much scientific detail, but aside from being an excellent skeptical introduction to the issue, it also brings out the personal viewpoints of those involved in the controversy -- though of course weighted towards the critics' perspective. The story could be an interesting one of human failings standing alone, but the emotional destruction wrought by false memories and their easy acceptance adds a very scary note.
